When they became unhappy with the way political leaders were making decisions for America, they wrote and recorded their radical album entitled American Idiot. The show is basically an extension of the album and explores many of the current themes and events that are affecting today’s population.

The story centers around Johnny, a disaffected young man trapped in suburbia. He feels that his parents don’t understand him and are stifling his creativity and need to express himself. He feels numb and lost and eventually flees the shackles of his parents’ home. As he spends time in the city trying to create meaning in his life, his friends are going through equally difficult life experiences. One man is stationed in Iraq during war. Another is struggling with the fact that his girlfriend is pregnant and he is about to become a father before he is ready. As their stories are told, the backdrop of early 2000’s America serves as social and political context. Johnny begins to find out more about himself and falls in love.
