Billy Elliot Musical Plot

First and foremost, Billy Elliot is the story of a boy who dared to follow his heart. Set in a Northern England mining town, Billy Elliot’s plot opens during the mining strikes of 1984. The protagonist is a boy who has lost his mother recently, whose grandmother is in the early stages of dementia, and whose father and brother are both hardened miners. His father tries to send Billy to a boxing class to toughen him up but Billy unexpectedly finds himself in a ballet class being held down the hall. With the help of an encouraging ballet teacher, Billy discovers that dancing comes naturally to him – much more naturally than boxing or mining. When he decides to audition for the Royal Ballet School, he is forced to reveal his secret to his family and the blue collar town that they live in.

Besides the main theme of Billy’s struggle to assert his own identity, the musical examines the political climate of England in the 1980’s. The audience is exposed to the working class’ struggle against Margaret Thatcher’s controversial labor policies that were in place at that time. Though the subject matter is heavy at times, the music of Elton John and extraordinary dance numbers make Billy Elliot a pleasure to watch. Most of the main roles are performed by children which is unusual for Broadway. It’s a delight to watch young talent light up the Broadway stage.

Ultimately, Billy Elliot is the heartwarming story of a talented young boy. His struggle to find his own path in life is something that any audience member can relate to. The beautiful music, incredible acting, and moving dance numbers create an emotional expression of defiance, love, and family on stage. Don’t miss this incredible Broadway show.
