Mamma Mia- A Global Smash Hit!
Planning a weekend getaway to NYC this summer? Still trying to decide what to see? I have a suggestion, go see Mamma Mia on Broadway. I am a sucker for these kinds of shows. Set on a Greek Island, on the eve of her wedding a girl suddenly realizes one of three men from her mother’s past could be her father. It’s a cute story and of course it has a happy ending! What really grabbed me with this show was the infectious music of Abba. Mamma Mia brings to life such classic hits such as “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me” and “The Winner Takes It All”.
Not only do we sell tickets to shows on Broadway but we also sell tickets to London’s West End. In the spring of 1999 Mamma Mia opened at the Prince Edward theatre. It was a smash hit from opening night. I couldn’t wait to see it. Lucky me, I was going to be in England that summer. Having been at Applause since I graduated college in 1994 I can probably say I have seen pretty much everything that has hit the Great White Way since then. Can I remember what I did before or after the theater for each one? Not really. What I do remember is the first time I saw Mamma Mia. I walked into the Prince Edward theatre full of anticipation. People from all over the world were in the theatre, but we all had one thing in common, our love for Abba’s music. By the end of the show we were all dancing in the aisle to “Dancing Queen” having had the time of our lives. I couldn't wait to come back to the office and let all my co workers know what a great hit Mamma Mia was going to be. How right I was. Don’t believe me? Go see it for yourself.

Applause Theater Service & its Broadway Customers Are Happy Customers Now
Let me explain the 3 main reasons why consumers shopping for Broadway Show tickets in New York City are happy customers of the theater these days. It's simple really:1. Applause's friendly and expert service is 2nd to none.
2. Applause is one of the few licensed New York State ticket companies with over 21 years of experience (New York State license #71AP1001029).
3.Applause offers the very best prices-simply shop around and see for yourself.
An example of one of Applause's customer service stories that I'm speaking of is when I spoke to a new Applause caller today. Her name is Anne Smith from upstate New York. Anne asked me for tickets to see Hair The Musical for a Saturday evening in July. When I quoted her the Applause retail price, along with the seat locations (which were very nice in the orchestra section), she seemed pleased. Right after this I mentioned that if she was flexible in her schedule, that I could obtain seats for her at a savings of over $60.00 a ticket for the same very good seating placement in the theater (except she'd need to attend the 2pm matinee). Although she was about to purchase the evening tickets at a higher price, she asked me if I was certain that I could get the same selection of seating for the "discounted" performance of Hair The Musical. When I assured her that she would get really good seats, she went ahead and made a purchase.
I know what some people might be thinking at this point, something like "what's the catch"? To make a long a long story short, we secured excellent center orchestra seats for Anne and put them in the mail to her this afternoon. Needless to say, we have a new, and very happy Applause Theater Service customer.
There are hundreds of online and some brick and mortar companies that sell tickets these days all over the country. I have been in the ticket selling business for 31 years myself. Although lots of change has occurred in my career, I really believe that shoppers and customers that are looking for the best value when buying Broadway tickets, might not really know where to shop.
So they go to Google, Yahoo, MSN or an online shopping service and type in the Broadway Show they are interested in seeing. Then they get a list of 10 or more different companies to search out. After a while, the differences are hard to tell, aren't they. The seat numbers and prices all start to blend and look alike.
At our small, friendly Broadway ticket company in New York City, we like to talk to potential Broadway theater-goers first, offer good information with expert advice on where to consider sitting in the theater and what possible "discount offerings" some of the shows have. Our Below Face Value ticket deal (becoming well known as BFV) now offers nearly 20 shows at an extreme discount.
We hope you'll consider calling our ticket service when your plans include a trip to the Broadway theater. I know our new customer Anne Smith is happy she did.
Regards,
Rich Gladstone

Mamma Mia! Becomes 15th Longest-Running Broadway Show
Loved the movie with Meryl Streep and thought the Broadway show was pretty darn good as well! Mamma Mia! played its 3,183th performance on June 27, passing Tobacco Road as the 15th longest-running show in Broadway history!!To mark the occasion, ten real brides-to-be were invited to a post-show meet-and-greet with the cast.
As part of the celebration, Mamma Mia!'s current Sophie, Brandi Burkhardt, threw a bouquet to the competing brides all vying to win a grand prize honeymoon trip to London. The lucky winner who nabbed the bouquet and the trip was Lauren Hopkins Sheridan.
Here is a look at the Saturday-afternoon event held on the stage of the Winter Garden Theatre:
ABBA's greatest hits are woven into a sunny tale set on a Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a bride's quest to discover her father's identity brings three men from her mother's past back to the place they last visited 20 years ago!

Statue Of Liberty Crown To Reopen On July 4
fellow New Yorkers. This will mark the first time that the public will be allowed to visit the crown since the devastating attacks of 9/11. On July 4 at 9am there will be a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to be followed by a performance by the City Lights Youth Theatre. Sasha Allen who is featured in the Broadway revival of Hair will also be on hand to perform the song "Huddled Masses" in honor of this special event. Having lived in New York City for almost eighteen years you would think that I would have made it to see Lady Liberty at least once. Sadly I have not. When you live in New York it's easy to forget how many great things there are to do here. The only time I play tourist is when my parents come to visit. Maybe it's time to do it again. Who knows? Maybe I'll see you there. New York City. There's no place like it.JWB

Great Seats, Great Prices, Great Time to See "South Pacific" on Broadway!
One of the best selling shows the past couple of years has been the incredible production of Lincoln Centers "South Pacific" on Broadway. I went to see it very early in previews with one of my managers here at Applause and knew then that this was going to be a gigantic hit. I went back to the owners of the company and said we need lots of seats for this monster! They trusted my judgement and the show took off and sold like gangbusters and has since slowed down very little.
And can you believe that this was the first EVER revival of this show on Broadway? That's just amazing to me. I'm sure there are many producers out there who had the opportunity to obtain the rights and passed on it and are now kicking themselves in the behinds!
Rediscover musical theater paradise at this enchanting Tony-winning revival. One of my favorite shows ever!
Set on a tropical island in the Pacific during World War II, a U.S. Navy nurse falls in love with a local plantation owner. This classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, the winner of seven 2008 Tony Awards, features one of the most romantic scores of all time.

Working 9 to 5, What A Way To Make A Living...
Most of us have had the opportunity to say this at one time or another. For
anyone who has ever had to work to make a living you can now see the musical that will make you smile at justice brought about in the workplace. It is a musical about three female co-workers who pushed to the boiling point, make a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot boss an make changes for the better for everyone in the office.
Sound familiar? Yes, 9 to 5 (the musical) is the same story as the famous movie which starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton and Dabney Coleman(pictured above at the shows premier in LA). This one may not have any of those big stars in it…
BUT Dolly Parton did write all of the music. Speaking of its stars, it has a very talented cast of Broadway veterans including Marc Kudisch, Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty. (pictured right)The show is pure entertainment from the energetic choreography to the colorful costumes that perfectly represent the 70’s to the perfectly bubbling score that Parton has written. For a absolutely charming night of theatre this is the perfect date.
Great seats are available and many performances have seats available for below face value. Call APPLAUSE now to get you 70’s fix and enjoy this delightful show.

Stay Cool with Shrek this Summer on Broadway!
The summer is upon us. What better way to stay cool then to catch a Broadway show. One of my favorites of the season is Shrek the Musical. When I first heard that Shrek would be opening on Broadway I was a little skeptical. I never saw any of the movies. Being in my late thirties I never really had any desire. For those of you who don't know, Shrek the Musical is based on the Oscar award winning Dream Works film. It features a green Ogre, Shrek, and his side kick Donkey as they try to save the land from an evil Lord Farquaad and rescue Princess Fiona from a terrible fate. Sounds silly and childish right? How wrong was I? Shrek the Musical features 19 brand new songs and a great cast of 27 playing all the well known characters from the movie including the Ginger Bread Man and The Three Little Pigs. Shrek the Musical has it all. I always tell my customers who think it is not really a show for them..too childish they say, not true. There are even some "adult jokes" that I was embarrassed to explain to my 6 year old nephew. Want to find out what they were? Go see Shrek for yourself. Give Applause a call today. West Side Story on Broadway a Must See!
The classic American musical "West Side Story" returns to Broadway and it's a show that shouldn't be missed! The story of Romeo and Juliet is transported to the turbulent streets of New York City in the 1950s. Star-crossed lovers are caught between rival street gangs. Directed by librettist Arthur Laurents, the show features Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's legendary score.
2009 Tony Award Winner! West Side Story is the winner of Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Karen Olivio who as Anita steals the show. Who can forget the great movie musical with Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno. One of my all time favorite movies.
Well this show is selling unbelievably well which surprises me a bit since it opened to mixed reviews, but word of mouth is great and the show should stick around for a few years.

The Longest Running Show on Broadway!
ThePhantom of the Opera is an amazing entity on Broadway. After more than 20 years it still is one of the biggest audience draws on Broadway. It is the story of a disfigured musical genius that haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera and exerts strange co
ntrol over a lovely young soprano. Based on "Le Fantome de L'Opera" by Gaston Leroux. The Phantom of the Opera has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics are by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe), and the book is by Richard Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. A beautiful and at this point very well known score with songs like “Music of the Night” and “Think of Me”. A universal story and a beautiful haunting score/operatic in nature but also full of Broadway bombast it pleases a wide array of audience.Great seats are available for all performances and many at prices below face value.

Now Is The Best Time To See Disney's The Lion King On Broadway
Now in it's celebrated 12th year on Broadway is The Lion King. The show which opened to rave reviews is still selling out nightly on Broadway. The Lion King won seven 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical and first opened at the newly refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre on November 13, 1997 before moving to the Minskoff Theatre in June 0f 2006. Not being the biggest Disney fan in the world I wasn't exactly looking forward to seeing the show when it was first announced. I mean how were they going to pull this thing off? Beauty and the Beast was one thing but we are talking about a show with a bunch of singing and dancing hyenas. Well not only did they pull it off but to this day it is one of the most thrilling spectacular achievements that I have ever seen On or Off-Broadway. In fact The Lion King is still one of our most requested shows here at Applause. This is a show that the whole family will love. Call now to get your tickets to see The Lion King on Broadway. CHRISTMAS IN JULY
I never realized how many people make something out of Christmas in July. Well I am not really going to talk about Christmas in July. I want to tell you about the Radio City Music Hall. Radio City is the largest indoor theatre in the world. It has seats for over 5000. Through the years more than 300 million people have seen shows in Radio City. The construction began in 1929 right after the depression began. It was deemed to be the Palace of the People. The Mighty Wurlitzer is the largest organ in the world. It has two Keyboards and 11 rooms where the pipes are stored. The pipes range from 2 1/2 inches to 32 feet.Through the years Radio City has become the Christmas capital of the United States and possibly the world. The first Christmas Tree was in 1931. Every year the Garden Chief searches for a Christmas tree anywhere from 75 feet to 100 feet high. The trees have come from as far away as Ottawa Canada. The tree is decorated with over 30,000 lights and is lite right after Thanksgiving and stays up until after January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany (The Magi or Three Kings).
Aside from its size, Radio City is considered a gem of Art Deco syle and architecture. If you have the opportunity to ever visit Radio City, try to give yourself time to see the wondrous work inside.
Applause has a special for the Christmas Spectacular for off peak dates in November. With the purchase of your ticket, you receive a coupon for a free popcorn and a coupon for a free soda or water. You know what you usually pay for these items in a theatre. The Christmas Spectacular is exactly what it is called. The world famous Rockettes are incredible and I don' think anyone ever forgets the living Nativity. All of the animals are real as well as the people representing Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child and the Shepherds and the Three Kings. We have clients that see it every year and never tire of it. It is also unforgettable for your children and grandchildren.
May I suggest that when you are in town you take advantage of our BFV program and see one or more of the many shows on Broadway we have at prices BELOW FACE VALUE. Please don't hesitate to ask our advice not only on the shows but also on restaurants in the area. Let us help you make this coming Christmas Season a memorable one.

God of Carnage is a Broadway must-see! 2009 Best New Play Tony Award Winner!
coexist with "hilarious" and "entertaining", but that's exactly what's currently happening on Broadway where God of Carnage is playing to packed houses. It just extended with this cast thru November 14th after taking a break July 27th thru September 7th.
Starting out as a seemingly innocent comedy about two upper middle-class couples trying to work out the problems their children had in a recent fight, only to end 90 minutes later in an all-out, no-holds-barred assault on the very foundations of our civilization. From polite coffee-table chit chat to full body-press violence and the four cast members – Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden – are all in it 110% til the end. One of the beauties of this play is the way everything keeps shifting. The person you may find the most unlikeable as the show begins is the one you're likeliest to cheer as it ends. The most righteous turns out to be the most prejudiced; the wimp turns out to be the bully and so on.
Nothing or no one is what they first seem to be. That's what makes this such a constantly fascinating piece of theatre that keeps reshaping before your eyes.
While the writing and direction are fabulous, it's the acting that blows you away. I urge you to run and see this show as soon as possible in order to see the sheer magic of these actors joined together in this production.
It's impossible to decide who to praise first. Harden(Best Actress Tony Winner this year) is front
and centre with the risks she takes, going from tight-lipped "Mom" to free-swinging nut as the play progresses. There's nothing more hysterical or braver than the way Harden throws herself on her opponents, or leaps up and down in anger when things don't go her way.
Davis is fascinating to watch, running from doe-eyed innocent to projectile vomiting worthy of a character from The Exorcist, while Daniels as her cell-phone-dependent husband works within a narrower margin of hysteria, but still finds enough ground to frighten us as well.
And then there's Gandolfini, spending a large part of the evening smiling that smile we know so well from his days as Tony Soprano. But, just like the former manager from New Jersey, Gandolfini's character here is capable of the most horrifying eruptions and if there's any doubt how close our civilized society is to the jungle, his Neanderthal rantings will eliminate them in a minute.
God of Carnage is that rare play which will not only surprise you and entertain you, but give you plenty to discuss for hours afterwards. Put this on the top of your "must-see" list in New York.

I GOT A LOT OF LIVIN' TO DO
BYE BYE BIRDIE may be one of the most popular musicals around. I mean, really…who hasn’t seen or been in a high school production of this wholesome 1950’s spoof of Elvis? (even I was the Mayor of Sweet Apple Ohio at age 15) .In case you are one of the few who are unfamiliar with BYE BYE BIRDIE, it is an Elvis-inspired musical about 50’s teen idol Conrad Birdie, who's been drafted into the Army.
The MacAfee family (and all of Sweet Apple, Ohio) goes topsy-turvey when teen idol Conrad Birdie comes to town to serenade one lucky fan before he enters the Army.
Featuring a score of familiar tunes like “Put on a Happy Face”, “One Boy”, “A Lot of Livin to Do” this sweet, wholesome production is sure to please the whole family. So pack up the station wagon and bring the whole gang for a retro blast from the past.

4th of July Fireworks Have Arrived Early! Ragtime Will Return to Broadway Oct. 23
A show that I absolutely loved is coming back to Broadway! Applause has just confirmed that Ragtime, the Tony Award-winning musical that fans say got a too-short Broadway run after its 1998 launch — in the same season as The Lion King — is coming back to the Great White Way. The news has been buzzed about for weeks, and on July 1 producers made it official: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' recent all-new and critically acclaimed production of Terrence McNally, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Ragtime, based on the E.L. Doctorow novel, featuring direction and choreography by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, will begin Broadway previews Oct. 23 at the Neil Simon Theatre. Opening is Nov. 15.
clock to the start of the 20th century--a time when anything was possible and ragtime music was king! For many, New York City was the land of opportunity. A poor Jewish immigrant sells his "moving picture" books on the street. A wealthy Victorian couple welcomes a runaway into their home. A Harlem jazz pianist turns an issue of justice into a revolution. One by one, their personal journeys come alive as historic figures offer guidance and diversion--among them escape artist Harry Houdini, auto tycoon Henry Ford, famed educator Booker T. Washington, and chorus girl Evelyn Nesbit. Together, their stories celebrate the struggle between tradition and independence… black and white… old and new… all in pursuit of the American dream. With its cast of vibrant characters, vivid sets and costumes, and Tony Award–winning book and score, Ragtime is the can't-miss theater event of the Fall 2009!Call Applause now to book all of your ticket needs and get restaurant recommendations. HOW CAN I RESIST YOU?
MAMMA MIA

nd enthrall. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother's past back to the Greek island paradise they last visited 20 years ago.
ABBA’s timeless 70's songs propel this sweet story of love, laughter and friendship, like a “Dancing Queen” every night making everyone have the time of their lives! Give the Gift of Rock of Ages....
My husband and I were attending a wedding a few weeks ago and were discussing what to get for the people that can get anything they want? We looked at each other and said "Tickets to Rock of Ages". We love this show and have seen it twice so we figured our friends would enjoy it as well. We definitely picked the right gift for them, the day after the wedding we got a phone call saying how perfect and what a great gift that was. Needless to say we were thrilled. Set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages tells the story of a small town girl who meets a big city rocker in LA’s most famous rock club, they fall in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s ROCK OF AGES, an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA, WHITESNAKE and many more. Don’t miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on! For the best seats at the best prices call Applause. "The Little Mermaid" Will Sink to the Bottom of Broadway's Ocean of Failures as it's Set to Close August 30th
POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS! Another one bites the dust! Applause has just learned that Disney's lavish Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid, will end Aug. 30 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, but the producer is sending her to wider waters. A national tour will launch in fall 2010.The stage version of the hit animated film borrowed Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's movie songs and added new songs by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. Opera director Francesca Zambello directed. Tony Award winner Faith Prince has recently stepped into the show as sea witch Ursula, one of the few characters who doesn't "swim" across the stage on roller-skate-like sneakers. I loved the show and will be sad to see it go!
There is talk in the theatre community that the Lunt-Fontanne will be the home of the new musical The Addams Family starting in early 2010, but that could not be confirmed at press time.
The Little Mermaid will have played 50 previews and 685 performances by the time it closes.

Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions, said in a June 30 statement, "Director Francesca Zambello, our creators, designers and cast conjured a world unlike any Broadway has seen before, and audiences have been captivated by it at every explosive performance. We are tremendously proud of the show and are confident we'll have an excellent summer but it would be fiscally irresponsible to our shareholders to risk operating losses with such a big show in the historically challenging fall months. We are closing the Broadway production to concentrate on the long future life of this title — beginning with next year's national tour and upcoming international productions."

Hair long beautiful Hair!
e. At least then I had the long beautiful hair too…not so much these days, but I still think I may be a wannabe hippie. Anyhow, I had the most amazing time seeing the show in the park. When I heard they were moving it to Broadway my first reaction was no way it won’t work as well. Well, how wrong I was! This show is even better than it was in the park and that says a lot.It has more energy and excitement of any show I have seen on Broadway in such a long time.
For a show written in the 60’s about a tribe of New York hippies one would think this might be a dated revival. However, this show has as much or even more poignancy today as it did then.
But it is also just pure enjoyment of familiar music performed by a beautiful cast. With songs like Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Easy To Be Hard, to the title song Hair James Rando, Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot created a score that set the stage for Rock musicals today.
For those with concern…Everything from drug use, to profanity, to nudity is all handled with such great care as not to offend or shock anyone from 13 to 113. As shocking as it was in the 60’s we have lived through all the shock and so much more today that we are not anesthetized but far more understanding of why they needed to go to these measures to stand up for their rights of freedom and independence.

Yankees Return Home On A Roll

The Yankees return to the Stadium tonight to start a 7 game homestand fresh off a sweep of the Mets in the subway series over the weekend, and riding a 5 game winning streak overall. They play 3 with Seattle before an important 4 game series July 4th weekend with division rival Toronto. Currently the Yankees sit in 2nd place in the American League East, 3.5 games behind the hated Red Sox. The divison is tightening up as the defending AL Champs Tampa Bay Rays have started to heat up and are only 1.5 behind the Yankees in 3rd place.
Joba Chamberlain will be on the mound tonight to start the homestand. Hes had an inconsistent year but pitched very well in his last start in a win against Atlanta, so he’ll look to build on that. Applause has tickets to all Yankee games this week and throughout the season, go give us a call today to see the Yankees in action at beautiful New Yankee Stadium. What better way to spend a warm summer afternoon or evening than at the ballpark?

HOW APPLAUSE DEFINES MIDDLEMAN
Many of us look at the term Middleman as derogatory, an individual who charges a fee usually for doing nothing. This is not the case with Applause. We are redefining the term Middleman. We are providing a service to our clients by providing tickets that are BFV (BELOW FACE VALUE). While to many price is the most important factor, many also need assistance on which show to choose. Is it suitable for a certain age group, is it risque or offensive, is it entertaining, etc. All the information in the world is on Google, Yahoo, etc. but do you have time to read it all. There is nothing like an experienced member of Applause's staff to aid you in making a selection of a Broadway show. Applause has been in business for over 20 years. Our biggest asset is our staff, many of whom have been here since they graduated college. Let us earn your trust that you are getting the best price and the best assistance in selecting a show on Broadway.

Longing for Normalcy
Doesn’t everyone long to be Normal? Or h
ave the Normal family? Most people think that everyone else around is normal except them. I hear people say all the time to other people “I wish my family was normal like yours”. Truth is, in this day and age every family has struggles to deal with. Hence the very popular term used today “disfunctional family”. Whatever it may be from divorce to mental illness, these days we all have issues that seem to make it difficult for a family to survive together. NEXT TO NORMAL is a musical that deals with one such family that is struggling to hold together in the midst of a Mother’s long term battle with mental illness. This may not seem like a topic to write a musical about but believe me this powerhouse show is so full of emotion you can’t help but be left overwhelmed. This small Rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt was nominated this year for 11 Tony Awards including Best New Musical. Although it did not win that category, it is still one of the best new shows you could see. It did win the Tony Award for the show’s lead actress Alice Ripley who gives a very moving performance as the Mother struggling to hold things together in her life. It also won the Tony for Best New Score and Orchestrations.
If you like a show that delivers much more than song and dance entertainment then check out this show. You won’t be disappointed…I have seen it twice already and am looking forward to seeing it again.

THE THREE GENERATIONS
I remember well how my parents and grandparents were always telling us to save money. They then proceeded to tell us what life in the Depression was like. It was serious, I mean people being hungry. Then my generation the baby boomers kind of lived life on both sides: the Depression and the boom after the World War II. Then came the Yuppies where money was no object. I think we know that that is all over. There was a joke in the office because I refused to buy coffee from Starbucks. I used to pay 60 cents for a cup of coffee until Starbucks came along. I resented them because now we pay almost a dollar more because merchants saw people buying coffee at Starbucks. Over 600 Starbucks have closed down as people return to the corner coffee shop.Applause has the same role in the ticket world. We are not Starbucks. We are the corner coffee shop selling the same tickets as the competition but at prices BELOW FACE VALUE(BFV). All of us are touched in someway or other by the economic situation. I apologize for bringing this up because I know so many people are out of work and have to worry where the next meal and the next mortgage payment come from. On the other hand, keeping Broadway going keeps millions of people employed. People come to New York City for Shopping, Sightseeing and Broadway Shows.
There are many people who do not have to worry about money and there are companies that service their needs. Our market are those who want to spend their money in the best way possible. When you are looking for a Broadway show, shop around. But PLEASE make sure you comparison shop and check Applause. Aside from the money saved, Applause promises you excellent service and a staff of Broadway experts. Let BFV become a motto for you when thinking about a Broadway show.

Go See "In The Heights" For the 4th of July! Lots of Fireworks!

weekend or the Summer to see In the Heights? Justina Machado has joined the production in the role of "Daniela" for 8 weeks only from this past Monday, June 29, through Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 West 46th Street).
Justina Machado is best known as Vanessa Diaz from the critically acclaimed "Six Feet Under."
As a neighborhood in Washington Heights prepares to celebrate the Fourth of July, a lottery win and various occurrences changes daily life.
This Tony Award Winner of Best New Musical of 2008 is a new sort of musical, with an old sort of heart.
The Mood of the Musical :
In the Heights focuses on the residents of a community of Washington Heights. As the events of a summer day unfold dreams are both diminished and determinedly realized.
The great strength of this show is the realistic feeling behind the individual characters and the collective community, and in this truth the audience is allowed a glimpse into the hearts and heads of a group of people and their hometown.
The production is not flawless. Parts of the plot seem rushed or slightly forced, and some of the musical numbers do not entirely hit the mark.
However, overall, it is a satisfying show with soul and spirit. Especially native New Yorkers will recognize something familiar and sincerely genuine about aspects of the show, and non-New Yorkers are treated to a show which exhibits a slither of daily neighborhood life and the combined sense of community and individuality behind it!

Applause Theater Service in New York City-A Middleman You Shouldn't Have to Live Without
Many people I know give me the distinct impression that going to see a Broadway Show is too expensive for them. But after speaking on the phone for a few minutes, my staff and I try to convey that Broadway doesn't necessarily need to cost you a fortune. Yes it is true that for the 5 or 6 shows that are "standing room only", one might have to pay a reasonable service charge to get some good seats. Still, the theater always has some seats in the mezzanine of the theater that are priced so the average consumer can well afford a seat. Take for instance the sold our productions of New York's Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot, Wicked, The Lion King, West Side Story and God of Carnage. These shows sell out all their inventory but still have some seats for around $100.00 to $120.00 each including ticket agency service charges. For the other shows playing on Broadway, you might benefit from having Applause as your "middleman" to help assist you with tickets. Although the other shows might not "sell out" all the time, a company like Applause, that knows the "ins and outs" of what's happening on Broadway-will most likely be able to assist you with securing great seats for top shows, and at cheaper prices than anyone can help get for you.

"Wicked" Asks the Question To What End? The Purpose of Our Relationships!
I love the Broadway musical Wicked. For those readers unfamiliar with the story, it is based on the best-selling novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory McGuire which runs parallel to the classic novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Their friendship causes them to face their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government and ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a back-story.
Wicked will be running here on Broadway for the next 50 or so years and on tour in the Phoenix metro area at Tempe’s Gammage Auditorium throughout the month of July, 2009. It also continues to be a huge hit in London and around the world. Find out if Wicked is coming to your area and check this musical out by calling me here at Applause. In the meantime, I wanted to share the lyrics to a song from Wicked. The song is sung between Elphaba and Glinda, just before the finale.
Watch a video of Kristin Chenoweth singing this song in concert. Gorgeous!

For Good
(Elphaba) I’m limited
Just look at me – I’m limited.
And just look at you
You can do all I couldn’t do, Glinda.
So now it’s up to you
For both of us – now it’s up to you…
(Glinda) I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
Because I knew you
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
(Elphaba) It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend…
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
(Glinda)
Because I knew you
(Both) I have been changed for good
I ask forgiveness
For the thing I’ve done you blame me for
(Glinda) But then, I guess we know
There’s blame to share
(Both) And none of it seems to matter anymore
(Glinda) Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
(Elphaba)Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood
Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
Changed for the better
(Glinda)And because I knew you…
(Elphaba) Because I knew you…
(Both)Because I knew you…
I have been changed for good.

Jersey Boys on Broadway in the Summer of 2009
I got to see Jersey Boys with some complimentary tickets the producer gave my company when the show first started preview performances on October 4, 2005. I remember sitting in the first row center thinking if I were sitting any closer, they'd have to give me a part in the show. All kidding aside friends, I have seen lots of Broadway theater in my days selling tickets at Applause Theater Service but Jersey Boys is truly one of the greatest of all time. Why you might ask?The story is a simple one really. It tells the story of a small group of New Jersey friends who mostly get into trouble time after time with the local law enforcement officials. The story is told by each member of a popular 60's and 70's rock n' roll band by the name of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
Jersey Boys was the winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical and has sold out mostly every Broadway performance it has played. Jersey Boys recently opened in Las Vegas as well, doing big business at the box office. I went to see it when I was last out in Las Vegas just to witness how they handle their production as I had heard many theatrical productions often make the show less running time out there. Maybe it was a few minutes shorter but mostly the Las Vegas production stayed true to the Broadway version. It was very entertaining as well.
Some of the top songs you'll know if you liked music of the 60's and 70's are "Can't Take My Eyes off of You", "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Fallen Angel". You'll feel like you are at a concert where 30 songs that you'll recall will be played in a concert format along with a very interesting narration by the members of the band. The show is directed by Des McAnuff who does an outstanding job making you feel like you are aware of everything going on around you every step of the way during the career of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
Although the Jersey Boys production in New York City has been a tough ticket to get since it started playing, the shows advance sales seems to be slowing down a little (they all do). What this means is that obtaining tickets is becoming somewhat easier.
There are many ticket agencies that would lead you to believe that Jersey Boys tickets should cost you allot of money. But I would caution you to shop, take your time and simply compare seat locations and ticket prices. If you need some help, my staff at Applause Theater Service in New York City would be pleased to help you.
If your plans include seeing additional shows, check out our up-to-date Broadway Show listing and our Below Face Value listing of tickets to shows we can save you lots of money for.
We are open seven days a week and can be reached at 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930. We love our customers and love talking about all the Broadway Shows. Restaurants too have become a big part of what we do, suggesting out-of-towners consider frequenting the local dining spots that we ourselves go to before the theater. MARY POPPINS
I was almost 20 years old when the movie Mary Poppins was released. It was a great hit but received more notoriety because Julie Andrews won the Oscar as Best Actress and beat Audrey Hepburn who took Julie Andrews' role in My Fair Lady, who was also up for am academy award for Best Actress..Mary Poppins was fantastic as a movie and it is even more fantastic as a Broadway Musical. I guess I started to appreciate it when Disney invited us to see previews of Mary Poppins. They had a full symphony orchestra play the music from Mary Poppins as a Classical Piece. It was then that it really struck me how spectacular the music to Mary Poppins is.
One of the advantages of Mary Poppins is that it has appeal for both adults and children. We have sold an incredible amount of tickets for Mary Poppins and have never had anyone tell us that they didn't like the show.
As I think about the setting, the music, the choreography, the acting, the voices and the special effects, it seems almost impossible to not like Mary Poppins. If you need to take someone to a Broadway show or if you would like to take someone to a Broadway show, Mary Poppins is ideal, no matter what age even a teenage boy (who will never admit he liked it). I wouldn't advise it for a Bachelor Party, however. But jokes aside, this version of Mary Poppins has an adult storyline as well as a Children's fairyland.
Another bonus is that Mary Poppins is one of the shows on Applause's BFV program. Prices are BELOW FACE VALUE. This is a real help these days where so many of us are under economic pressure. If we would like to do something special for ourselves and or for our family and friends without breaking the bank, Mary Poppins would be an excellent choice. A great show and BFV prices. Would love to have your feedback.

The Little Mermaid on Broadway- a 2009 Summer Spectacle
I've seen most of the Broadway Shows playing in New York City but the one I often think of to suggest to families visiting The Big Apple is Disney's The Little Mermaid. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, a famous Danish author and poet, The little Mermaid tells the interesting story of a young mermaid who wants to give up her life "under the sea" in exchange for the one she often dreams of- a human life above the ocean. A life where a mermaid by the name of Ariel, longs for the love a human prince. The Little Mermaid is Disney on Broadway's latest Broadway creation adapted from the 1989 animated film by The Walt Disney Company. The Broadway production opened on Broadway on January 10, 2008. Although many theater-goers seem to think that the stage production of The Little Mermaid is primarily for younger kids and teenagers, I have to say that after seeing the show several times myself, it is every bit as worthy of seeing for adults as so many of the other popular Broadway Shows playing this year.
The Little Mermaid has gorgeous music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with a few new songs co-written by Mr. Menken and Glenn Slater. The scenic design is by George Tyspin with amazing costume design by Tatiana Noginova and a book by Doug Wright. The current stars of The Little Mermaid are Chelsea Morgan Stock (as Ariel), Faith Prince (as Ursula), Drew Seeley (as Prince Eric) and Norm Lewis (as King Triton).
Right now our theater ticket agency called Applause Theater Service (license #71AP001029) has special insider discount ticket deals through the entire summer of 2009. We call it the BFV ticket deal. BFV stands for Below Face Value which is our way of bringing about amazingly low prices on The Little Mermaid as well as nearly 20 or so other popular Broadway Shows. If you think this show might be one that you and your family will enjoy, we hope you'll consider calling on Applause to obtain the best seats in the house for the cheapest ticket agency price in the country. There's only one way to know if what we say is true. Simply shop around and give us a chance to provide you with our brand of service with the usual everyday Applause low prices.
There's never any pressure to buy when using our service. We simply want to inform the public about what's playing on Broadway and the way to go about buying the best seats for the best shows at the best prices. I hope you found this information helpful and that we can be of service to you, your friends and your family whenever your plans include seeing a Broadway Show.
Enjoy the Broadway Theater whenever you get the chance. Bye for now.

See South Pacific this Summer

In the hot days of summer what could be better than to see a show set in the tropics of the South Pacific?
Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples -- US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat -- and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices.
There are many reasons to see this show. It happens to be one of the most beautiful shows visually I have ever seen on Broadway. Most of the show looks just like a postcard from the South Pacific. But another reason is that for a limited time you have the opportunity to see the delightful Laura Osnes. This is Laura’s second Broadway show after winning the role of Sandy in Grease on America’s YOURE THE ONE THAT I WANT. This pretty young engenue stands strong in the shoes of the show’s original Nellie, Kelli O’Hara.

Many great seats are still available for performances this summer. Call Applause to check out prices and seats available.

What? "The Nutty Professor" Musical Coming to Broadway? Sure is!!
I'm a Jerry Lewis nut! And this news couldn't be a more pleasant surprise. I idolize this great comedian and can't wait to see this new musical! Legendary actor, director, writer and producer Jerry Lewis will make his theatrical directorial debut on Broadway with the new musical, "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR", based on the 1963 film that he starred in and co-wrote. With music by Academy Award, Emmy Award, Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Marvin Hamlisch and a book and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner and Grammy Nominee Rupert Holmes, the musical is aiming for a bow on Broadway in the 2010/2011 season and is being produced by Loud Watch Productions, LLC.Recognized as one of The American Film Institutes best comedies in their "100 Years...100 Laughs", "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR", written by Jerry Lewis & Bill Richmond, was released by Paramount Pictures in 1963 and just recently crossed the 800 Million Dollar mark in world-wide grosses. The film also starred Lewis in what went on to be one of his most famous roles and successful films. Since its release, there have been countless tributes and homage to the film and Lewis' performance, not only in the US, but in Europe, Asia, Australia and across the globe."I was born with show business in my blood and working on Broadway gets it coursing through my veins like no other place can. Marvin and Rupert have given one of my favorite and most enduring films "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR" a hilarious and gorgeous adaptation for Broadway and I could not be happier. Does this story sing and dance? You bet it does," says Jerry Lewis.
Professor Julius Kelp is a dull geek with a bright idea. Privately experimenting in his laboratory to find the cure for his social failures, he creates a potion that transforms him into a smooth talking, party animal named Buddy Love. Buddy is everything that Julius always dreamed of being and gets the girl that he always dreamed of dating, Stella. The only problem is that the potion doesn't last very long. Will the school find out his secret and will Stella stick around even after Love has left the building?
Marvin Hamlisch states, "Music is truly an international language and it has the ability to bring people together like nothing else...except comedy. It's a thrill to be working with Jerry Lewis, a true king of comedy, and bringing this classic story to life on Broadway with music."
"Jerry Lewis has been my hero from boyhood, not only as one of the most gifted entertainers of all time but also as one of the grand masters of movie-making. To work with Jerry and the vivid cast of characters he created is a privilege and thrill beyond measure," says Rupert Holmes.
All I can say is I can't wait!! Call Applause now for all of your Broadway ticket needs and ask for the special below face value pricing that's available for most shows! Call 800-451-9930

Amy Spanger Exits Rock of Ages
It constantly amazes me how fast news changes in this business. Case in point. I was halfway thru a blog about Amy Spanger returning to Rock of Ages tonight when my co-worker informed me that in fact she was not returning tonight but instead leaving the show for good. Now I personally don't know the reason for Ms. Spanger's departure. According to a representative of the production it was for personal reasons. It was also reported that she had been absent from the show since June 8 due to vocal rest. I myself hope that she is o.k. and that this talented performer will be back on the boards in the near future. She truly is one of a kind. Best of luck Amy!JWB

Phantom of the Opera Still going Strong on Broadway
Is it possible that The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway is still one of the most popular shows ever? You bet it is my friends. I've been selling theater tickets for 31 years now and cannot believe how many times my customers go to see this show over and over again. The Phantom of the Opera won 7 Tony Awards in 1988, which was the year my partner and friend Bill Stolting and I opened are little ticket agency in The Big Apple. The Phantom of the Opera won the much coveted Best Musical Tony Award that year as well thanks to the brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's gorgeous music with lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart.
Still selling thousands of tickets every week, The Phantom of the Opera tells the mysterious story of Christine Daae, a beautiful young opera soprano and the disfigured musical genius that falls in love with her. His goal is to make Christine the new star of the Paris Opera as he exercises a reign of terror over everyone in his path. The setting is the Paris Opera House in the early 1900's. Originally not a very strong selling novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera was made into a movie in 1925 and then a musical in 1986 appearing in London prior to its Broadway run.
The Phantom of the Opera is still "fresh" when you consider it has been playing on Broadway for over 20 years now. Howard McGillin stars as the current Phantom having played the role for more than 2000 performances and Jennifer Hope Wills plays the role of Christine. Ms. Wills is best known for co-starring with Brooke Shields in the most recent revival of A Wonderful Town a few years back on Broadway.
I have seen The Phantom of the Opera several times in New York and it is one of the better Broadway shows, particularly if you don't get the opportunity to see much theater. Right now our company has special access to amazing orchestra and front mezzanine seats at prices that are Below Face Value. BFV is simply a way our customers can gain access to The Phantom of the Opera and several other popular Broadway Shows at prices that are less than the regular printed price on the tickets.
So if you think you might want to buy yourself some tickets to The Phantom of the Opera at prices, consider calling Applause Theater Service in New York City a call. Remember to ask for the BFV ticket deal and tell them The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. You'll be so glad you did.

9 To 5 The Musical Is A Laugh Riot
Forget what the critics say. 9 to 5 The Musical is a lot of fun. I loved it.Is it one of those shows that will change your life? Probably not. Who cares. Every once in a while it is nice to go to show and just laugh and have a good time. After all isn't that what theatre is supposed to be about. Now don't get me wrong. I love serious shows like Next To Normal and Hair. They belong on Broadway just as much as the silly shows like Shrek and Avenue Q. That's what makes Broadway great. There is something for everybody. So if you are looking for a fun night in the theatre than I strongly suggest you get your tickets to see 9 to 5 The Musical on Broadway. I mean a show with a score by Dolly Parton can't be all bad right?JWB

Billy Elliot Helping to Keep Broadway Theater Stronger Than Ever in 2009
It's been 3 weeks since the 2009 Tony Awards aired. Those of us in the ticket selling end of the Broadway theater business usually know which shows are going to become the "sold-out" mainstays for the next several years or so after the winners are announced. Although this past season on Broadway was much more exciting than in the last few years, it appears that ticket sales for 10 Tony Award winner Billy Elliot The Musical are starting to take off.Billy Elliot The Musical is a terrific story based on the October 2000 release of the motion picture film called Billy Elliot. The film broke several box office records of the past, being nominated for 3 Golden Globes, 3 Oscars and 13 Baftas. The story follows the dreams and aspirations of a young boy from Northern England and his quest to become a ballet dancer. It takes place in the 1980's against the backdrop of turbulent times during a life threatening coal-miners strike in the Maggie Thatcher era.
There are 4 actors that alternate in the role of Billy Elliot. They all do a marvelous job as the show involves lots of dancing. Billy Elliot has won 10 Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Musical. Elton John wrote the music and book and lyrics are by Lee Hall. Stephen Daldry does a wonderful job directing Billy Elliot. The show has been a hit in London and is sure to play on Broadway for many years to come. In time, I am sure Billy Elliot will start to play to audiences around the United States as well. It's truly a great story of triumph over adversity.
Even as the recession was beginning to affect employment and consumer's spending habits in New York City during the earlier part of this year, sales for tickets to Billy Elliot The Musical were over 90 % occupancy. The recessionary times, at least in our city, seem to be lessening their hold on going to Broadway Shows, eating out and shopping. My opinion as someone who lives in New York City, is that Billy Elliot along with some help from a new crop of popular shows like West Side Story's revival, Hair The Musical's revival, God of Carnage and Next to Normal is that Broadway might emerge from these times as stronger than ever.
When you think about it, Billy Elliot's theme of difficult economic times, jobs being outsourced and unions having to renegotiate their terms and the dreams of young people making their own way in life, not simply doing exactly what their parents want them to-all directly correlate to the message in Billy Elliot The Musical. There are many lessons to be learned by young and older alike from this musical.
Although Broadway theater was holding up very well during the recession, I think Billy Elliot The Musical has brought about a very positive effect on Broadway in general. Right after the Tony Awards aired earlier this month, several shows started selling at a much faster pace at our company. We really feel that Billy Elliot is stirring up lots of excitement on Broadway. For itself and for many other shows as well.
I hope this information was helpful to you. And if you think Billy Elliot is a show that you would like to see, simply call me personally at Applause Theater Service in New York City to obtain tickets to one of the finest shows I have ever seen in my lifetime. My phone number is 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930. Just ask for the Broadway Ticket Man.
If you think you may want to "take in" some other top Broadway theater, I suggest you have a look at our latest promotion called Below Face Value. BFV is Applause's ongoing campaign to bring about the best prices to the theater-going public. BFV is the "insider's" guide to buying tickets for several Broadway shows at below the regular printed price usually that appears on the tickets.

Chicago The Musical on Broadway
Come this November 14, 2009, the revival of Chicago The Musical will turn 13 years old. And "lucky 13" it is for sure.Chicago is one of those shows that pleases its audiences from beginning to end. And the producers of Chicago do an awesome job of constantly changing the lead cast members, often to recognizable movie actors and Broadway regulars so that they can keep the show "fresh". Chicago The Musical tells the story of corruption in the criminal justice system in prohibition Chicago through satire. Chicago The Musical is based on a 1926 play by news reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins who wrote stories on real criminals and the crimes they committed. Although the original Broadway production of Chicago played for 936 performances starting in 1975, the current revival has played over 5000 performances. Quite a feat I would say when you consider how many shows open and close in the same year on Broadway.
Right now Tom Hewitt plays the role of Billy Flynn. Mr. Hewitt is best known for his lead role in The Rocky Horror Show, for which he earned Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations some years back. Chandra Wilson plays the role of Matron Mama Morton. Chandra is best known for her leading role on television's Grey's Anatomy for which she earned an Emmy nomination as Dr. Miranda Bailey. Rounding out the cast are Bonnie Langford (as Roxie Hart), Amra-Faye Wright, Toms Riis Farrell and R. Lowe. The shows creators are Broadway favorites John Kander and Fred Ebb, who wrote the music and lyrics with a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb. Direction of Chicago is by Walter Bobbie with choreography by Ann Reinking. Ms. Reinking was the star of Dancin' nearly 30 years ago, made famous by Mr. Fosse's unique dance routines specifically designed for the Broadway stage.
I've been in the Broadway ticket selling business all of my adult life and sold tickets to a few thousand shows. Many of them were terrific shows to see but if you want to see one of the more popular Broadway Shows in the history of New York theater, you might want to consider buying yourself some tickets to this great old-fashioned Broadway show. Right now, Applause Theater Service (New York State license #71Ap1001029), our little Broadway ticket agency operating in New York for 21 years now, has specially priced tickets to see Chicago The Musical. And at prices that are Below Face Value. What this means is that we can obtain the best seats in the orchestra or front mezzanine of the theater for less then the regular printed price on the Chicago ticket.
There are hundreds of companies that sell Broadway tickets on the Internet. Simply do your shopping then consider a call to Applause in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. Remember to tell them the Broadway Ticket Man sent you and ask for your BFV ticket deal also. The money you will save will be more than enough to pay for some nice meals before the theater.
I hope you think this advice is helpful and that you will call Applause if you have questions about Chicago The Musical or about any of the other fabulous Broadway Shows playing right now.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone aka The Broadway Ticket Man

Avenue Q To Close On September 13
This is truly a sad day. One of my favorite shows and one of Broadway's most unexpected hits in recent years is saying goodbye. I am of course talking about the 2004 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Avenue Q. When it closes it will have played 33 previews and 2,534 performances. Not too bad for a show that most people thought would barely last a couple of years.I've had the pleasure of seeing this hilarious show over the years and I can't believe it will no longer be around. The show was the first Broadway show my parents ever saw and they loved it. In fact they still talk about the show to this day and it's been over five years. I guess it made a lasting impression. If you haven't seen Avenue Q yet than you don't know what you are missing. You have got to see it before it is too late. For those of you lucky people like me who loved the show then I think it's time to check it out again. Maybe if tickets sales increase it will encourage the producers of the show to keep it around a little longer. It worked with Rent. Maybe it will this time too.

Initial Casting Has Been Announced for the New Musical Spider-Man on Broadway! Tix Now on Sale with Applause!
Initial casting has been announced for the new musical Spider-
Man Turn Off the Dark, which will now begin previews at Broadway's Hilton Theatre Feb. 25, 2010, more than a month later than originally reported (Jan. 16, 2010). A new opening date will be announced shortly. Tickets are on sale now with Applause!Evan Rachel Wood(The Wrestler, Running with Scissors, Across the Universe) will play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's girlfriend, and Tony winner Alan Cumming(Cabaret, X-Men) will star as Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin), Spider-Man's most notorious nemesis.
The Lion King's Julie Taymor directs.
About the casting of Wood and Cumming, Taymor said in a statement, "'Across The Universe' was my first opportunity to work with Evan Rachel Wood — and it was a sublime experience. Evan is unique: she is a young actress with incredible depth for
both serious and comic drama in films and theater, and on top of that, she has an extraordinary lyrical voice. We are thrilled to have her as our Mary Jane. . . . I obviously love him as this is my third collaboration with Alan – and finally we get to do it on stage. He has such range and such charisma as a performer that I feel confident his Green Goblin will bring many surprises that will move and entertain us."Drawings from over 40 years of Marvel comic books, Spider-Man, according to press notes, "spins a new take on the mythic tale of a young man propelled from a modest rowhouse in Queens to the sky-scraping spire of the Chrysler Building, the bustling offices of the Daily Bugle, through the dizzying canyons of Manhattan, to new vistas never before seen. The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down — literally — when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek — suddenly endowed with astonishing powers — soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Spider-Man's battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected — yielding new characters as well as familiar faces — until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero's journey." Additional casting will be announced at a later time.

The Passing Of An Icon
I am still in shock. Here we are not even 24 hours later and I still can't believe that Michael Jackson,The King of Pop,is no longer with us. Like millions of people around the world I sat glued to my television set as this tragic story unfolded yesterday evening. On my way to work this morning I stopped at a local newsstand before heading to the train. That's when it really hit me. There was a picture of Michael with the caption "DEAD". You can't get any more final than that. Even though he is gone his music and his legacy will live on long after we have left this earth. There will never be another Michael Jackson. Rest in Peace Michael. Heaven has a new angel.JWB

We were honored to be chosen by Travel Agents as their source of theatre tickets for their clients. The staff knew we were chosen because of our pleasantness (one agent told us you sound like New Yorkers but you are so pleasant), our expertise and our reputation of reliability. A travel agent could lose a very important client if there were a problem with Theatre Tickets. Applause paid the smallest commission per ticket of any Ticket Agency, not because we were cheap but because we usually also charged the lowest price for our tickets. The Travel Agents could make a much larger commission from other Ticket Agencies but it was not worth the risk to them. Their clients would have had to pay more for the tickets if they used another Ticket Agency and they would be upset if the tickets were not to their satisfaction or were not there. We never closed until we were sure that all of our clients were seated in the theatre. We all know that all the information one could possibly want is on the Internet. The problem is deciding which one to believe. The travel agent usually has the knowledge and expertize to give us this information. While many Travel Agents now have to charge a fee, many times it is worth it to make sure you choose the right venue, the right hotel, etc. And most likely they will get your tickets from Applause.

Haven't See Hair Yet? Call Applause Now
One of the biggest surprises for me this past season was the new revival of Hair. Prior to seeing the show I had never seen a production of Hair or the 1979 film of the same name. From the very beginning I was blown away. Sure I had heard some of the songs before but to hear them performed live on a Broadway stage was truly unbelievable. The cast of newcomers and Broadway veterans made the stage come alive and I was moved not only by their talent but the obvious love they had for each other. I'm sorry but you can't fake chemistry like that. Regarding the nudity in the show. It is brief. I wanted to mention that in case there were any parents out there who were hesitating on whether the show would be appropriate for their little ones. This show deserves to be seen. No matter what your age. In fact this show is just as relevant was in 1968. Maybe even more so now.JWB

New Tracy Letts Play Announces Theatre
It was announced today that Superior Donuts, the highly anticipated new play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts(August:Osage County)has found a home. The show which opened to rave reviews in 2008 at Chicago's famed Steppenwolf Theatre will begin previews on September 16 at the Music Box Theatre. The official opening is set for October 1. I can not wait to see this new show. August:Osage County which sadly is closing this Sunday after a near two-year run is one of the best shows that I have ever seen and I expect this new production to be just as good. The show according to a Steppenwolf rep tells the story of "Arthur Przybyszewski owns a decrepit donut shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. This provocative comedy, set in the heart of one of Chicago's most diverse communities, explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship."
Applause is taking orders now so don't delay. Get your tickets to see Superior Donuts on Broadway.

See Disney's The Little Mermaid On Broadway
I'll be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of Disney on Broadway. Never have been. Never will be. Although it does have it's place on the Great White Way. If not for the almighty "Mouse" than most kids would never experience that magic that is live theatre. So I guess that's a good thing. Anyway back to The Little Mermaid. When it first opened we were invited to see the show. I went kicking and screaming of course. Not only did I find myself enjoying it but it actually tugged at my heart a few times. Now that doesn't mean I cried. I am man enough to admit that there have been several shows that have brought a tear to my face. Just not this one. The truth is if are looking for a show that the whole family will enjoy then you couldn't find a better one than The Little Mermaid. I mean if I liked it then it couldn't be all bad right?JWB

Get Your Tickets To In The Heights-The 2008 Tony Award Winner For Best Musical
Those of you who have read my blogs know how much I love In The Heights. Not only have I seen the show several times but I listen to the cast recording at least once or twice a week. I guess you could say I'm a fan. What's not to love? It has a great score and a story that tugs at your heart in more ways than one. Last month PBS presented a documentary on the show titled In The Heights: Chasing Broadway Dreams which was a behind-the-scenes story of the show. I found the documentary very inspiring and if you haven't seen it I encourage you to check it out if you get the chance. I have included a link to it on You Tube. Enjoy! I know I did.JWB

What Is A Ticket Broker?
Let's be honest. Most people that buy tickets for a Broadway show get them thru a third party. Because most people don't live in New York City that is the best way to go.Sure they could wait until they get here and try their luck at the box office but by doing that they are taking the risk of not getting tickets to see the show at all. Why let that happen? The thing is you don't have too. Now working at Applause all these years I am probably a little biased when it comes to our company. I'm sure if you were to ask employees of any other ticket company they would say the same. They would be crazy not too. All I can tell you is that when you call us you are not only getting a live person on the phone but you are getting people who care. Anybody can make a sale. The reason you are calling is to buy tickets after all. The thing is we are not here just to make a sale. If that was the case then we might as well just do all of our business thru the computer and send you an e-mail confirmation when we are done. No humans. No customer service. That's no way to do business as far as I'm concerned. I know that if I was going to spend my hard-earned money than I would want the assurance that when I give my credit card I am getting my money's worth and from a company that cares about me. Not just the almighty dollar.JWB

New Customers
In the five years that I have worked at Applause I have spoken to thousands of customers about everything from how to get tickets to their favorite shows to suggestions on things to do during their trip to New York City. Let's be honest most people don't buy on their first call. Not there's anything wrong with that. I do the same thing. It's called comparison shopping. We all do it. Now making sure they call back is what we are after. Besides myself we have five people in my office who sell tickets. On Sundays I work alone. During the week we sell the most tickets with Saturday and Sunday being the slowest sales days. However it may surprise you that on those days I get a lot of new customers. By having less calls I am able to spend more time with each customer. As I said before not everybody is going to buy on that first call. The thing is to make sure that before they hang up you have provided them with the best customer service and the confidence in what you are speaking about. If you can do that the rest is easy.JWB

Another Happy Customer....
Not many people get to say they enjoy what they do for a living. I on the other hand really do enjoy what I do. After all why else would one travel over 200 miles a day to and from work? I love interacting with people and sharing my love of the Theatre and New York City. Anyway...yesterday I was helping a Travel Agent obtain tickets for her clients to Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, I got her great seats and finished the order and sent her a confirmation as I always do. A little later on in the day when I was checking my e-mails I saw one from her and when I opened it, it was just a simple "Thank you" from her telling me that it was her first time working with us and how helpful I was and how she can't wait to do more business with us. Hey, what can I say...Just another happy customer. So for the best seats at the best prices give Applause a shout. You will be happy you did!!!!!Carol Burg

It's Just My Opinion
I can't believe it's almost July 4th. Where has the time gone? Before you know it Christmas will be here. Yes I know it's still over six months away but time flies pretty fast in the Big Apple. I should know. I've been here for over seventeen years and it seems like just yesterday that I moved here from Illinois. I'm sure you're wondering where I'm going with this right? Over the years I have seen over one hundred shows On and Off-Broadway. Now of those hundred I would say that maybe thirty of those were original shows. Now I know revivals have their place. Truth be told some of the best productions in the last few years have been reproductions of shows from the 50's and 60's. That's all fine and dandy but where are the fresh ideas? Yes I know every season there are at least 7-8 new musicals. That happens every year. Of those new shows how many are truly original? This past season alone brought ten new shows. Four of those were based on an original idea. Not a hit movie or a cartoon. The only one to survive was Rock of Ages. Now don't get me wrong. I loved Rock of Ages. In fact it was one of my favorite shows of the year featuring some of my favorite songs of all time. None of which were new. Get my point? Look you may not agree with me. That's fine. Afer all it's just one man's opinion.JWB
