The new Broadway production of West Side Story, directed by Arthur Laurents, will begin previews Feb. 23, 2009, at the Palace Theatre(current home to Legally Blonde)According to producer Kevin McCollum,(Tony Award winning producer of Rent, Avenue Q, and In The Heights)this new production will "introduce the unprecedented element of selectively weaving Spanish throughout both the book and songs." West Side Story librettist Arthur Laurents who was recently lauded for his highly successful production of Gypsy recently stated that,"This show will be radically different from any other production of West Side Story ever done. The musical theatre and cultural conventions of 1957 made it next to impossible for the characters to have authenticity. Every member of both gangs was always a potential killer even then. Now they actually will be. Only Tony and Maria try to live in a different world." Expect this new production of this landmark musical to be one of the most highly anticipated of the season.
