I like to read about business. We were sitting around Bill's office several times over the past few months or so, just talking about how the "ticket business" has changed. Indeed it has. We used to "hand write" our customer ticket requests on an index size work order and then manually carry out all the business functions we needed to make sure the customer received their tickets and then finally bill out a credit card so we could get paid. It seemed like the phone call was easy and fast and the process took much longer. This sort of reminds me of my mom saying "it seems to take quite a while to make dinner yet a much shorter time to consume the meal".
Although Bill and I were fortunate enough to have our small ticket company automated a few years back we have been thinking about some things that we could tell consumers that separates us from the hundreds of other ticket companies. Can you believe there are hundreds of mostly small mom and pop like companies that provide a theater ticket service to companies and consumers alike?

See Passing Strange Thru Applause Theatre Service
All week my colleagues have been raving about this show. So naturally I had to see what all the fuss was about. Normally we as a company don't usually agree when it comes to the shows that we see. Well now that I have seen it I can honestly say that is not the case anymore. I haven't had such an exhilarating evening in theatre like this in a long time. Sure I knew going in what to expect. I checked out the website, heard a couple of songs and thought it sounded like fun. At least unlike most new musicals on Broadway this was original. Not that I'm knocking the other shows I just think it's nice for a change to see something new and exciting. With a score that has some of the most tuneful, soulful rock songs, and witty, thought-provoking lyrics in recent memory, Passing Strange is a moving and hilarious tale of a young, black bohemian on a journey of escape and exploration. "A Catered Affair" is on sale now! And Applause Theatre Service has got your tickets to this Broadway Musical Comedy Hit!
Tickets are now available for the new musical "A Catered Affair" written by and starring Harvey Fierstein. 
The show has an extremely solid creative team with the book by the legendary Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by the highly respected John Bucchino. The production is being directed by John Doyle a.k.a. the man that made Patti Lupone play a tuba; he has staged Sweeney Todd and Company for Broadway with all the actors playing musical instruments. The cast boasts Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, Leslie Kritzer, Harvey Fierstein (doing double duty) and Matt Cavenaugh.
A Catered Affair, based on the Paddy Chayefsky TV film and movie, focuses on a 1950's family and their struggle to run a family business and still provide a lavish "catered affair" for their daughter's wedding. The musical is about family and love. Ahhh - that sounds nice. The reviews have come in from the out of town tryout at the Old Globe in San Diego and there is good news! Let's hear some of the good, shall we?
Variety's Bob Verni had very nice things to say about the show; praising all aspects of the piece. He had particular praise for the quiet and elegant staging of the production:
"No musical has ever been so quiet, so often, as "A Catered Affair," the Broadway-bound adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky's '50s-era teleplay and Gore Vidal's subsequent screenplay. The subject is a family whose communication has reached a dead end, so it's fitting that the most affecting moments are those in which words simply aren't enough. Much is verbalized in Harvey Fierstein's gritty slice-of-life dialogue and John Bucchino's sensitive lyrics, but the use of silence -- sometimes for as long as 30 seconds -- is remarkable: Few tuner directors would conceive of those quiet moments, and even fewer would dare attempt them."

Also in the positive column was Anne Marie Welsh from the San Diego Union-Tribune. Ms. Welsh singled out Faith Prince's performance and the shows simple emotional honesty. She had this to say:
"Aggie's the reverse image of pushy Mama Rose in "Gypsy," and Prince's beautifully restrained, carefully calibrated and thoroughly unsentimental performance should earn her accolades and awards this spring when the show opens in New York. Whether this kind of authentic soul-baring in song is too subtle for Broadway audiences fed on "American Idol"-style belting is another question altogether."
"Otherwise, Fierstein and company have already achieved in this artful piece far more than most hard-selling musicals aspire to: They've created real struggling human beings whose deepest feelings are beyond words - and therefore find true expression in song. The Farnsworth Invention To Close On March 2
What a shame. Words cannot describe how much I loved this show. I think it's sad that an amazing show like this can't find an audience. But in this day and age of "Big" musicals it's not easy for a play like this to have a long run. Thankfully the stagehand's strike didn't last longer, or this show, not to mention many other new plays might never have opened. But we have to look on the bright side I guess. There are still plenty of plays running on Broadway too see. Best of all we sell all of them and at an incredible savings. Get Tickets To See Young Frankenstein Thru Applause Theatre Service
I've never seen the movie. I didn't even see The Producers when it was on Broadway. My feeling was that anything built up that much was not going to be worth all the hype. How could it be? But now having seen Young Frankenstein twice I can honestly say that if you want to see a good old fashioned musical comedy that will make you laugh from beginning to end than Young Frankenstein is the show to see. Now if that doesn't make you want to see the show then I have four more words for you. Megan Mullally and Sutton Foster. Every moment those two powerhouses are on stage I dare you not to take notice. Those two ladies are what a true Broadway star should be, and are I am happy to say. They alone are worth the price of admission. Now I know some of the jokes may be a little off color at times, but if you've ever seen a Mel Brooks movie then you already know what you're in for before the curtain even rises. Just go, have a good time, and enjoy the show for what it's worth. And that's all I have to say about that. Except this. Having trouble getting tickets to Young Frankenstein? Well here we are over 35 years later and Grease is still the word. On Broadway that is. It further paints a picture that Broadway business is not as good as it is. January 9th, 1988. Who would have thought that a dark, yet romantic musical about a guy in a mask would still be running, not to mention charming audiences year after year? I didn't. The County Girl Opens On Broadway This Spring
To say that I am looking forward to this production would be an understatement. Truth be told I'm really not that familiar with the show or the 1955 Oscar winning film. The real reason I am so excited is because playing the lead is one of my favorite actor's, Oscar winner Morgan Freeman. To be perfectly honest the man could get up on stage and read the phone book and I would be happy. The playwright Clifford Odets' scored a big hit two years ago with Awake and Sing which won the Tony Award for Best Revival. Besides Mr. Freeman, the play stars Oscar winner Frances McDormand with direction by Tony and Oscar winner Mike Nichols. Now if that doesn't make you want to see it then I don't know what will. The Country Girl features the title character, Georgie, who is married to actor Frank Elgin, once a great theater star and now down on his luck. When Frank is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd, he has the chance to make a major comeback. Performances begin April 3 at the Benard B. Jacobs Theatre, with an official opening night scheduled for April 27. Get your tickets now to what is sure to be one of this season's biggest hits!
