Broadway For The Next Generation
(Editor's note.In honor of the opening of Hair I decided to re-post my very first blog. It was written on August 16,2007. My how time flies.)April 29, 1968. Anybody know what happened on that date? Well like most people I know, myself included, I was not alive in 1968. Heck I didn't even discover musicals until 1984. I mean let's be realistic the last thing a wild 11 year old wants to do is sit in a stuffy old theatre when instead he could be outside playing baseball with his buddies. Then one Easter Sunday that all changed. I remember my 5th Grade music teacher Mrs. Dawson told us about her favorite movie. The Sound of Music. Now at first the idea of watching a story about a nun who takes care of a bunch of kids in Pre-Nazi Germany didn't really interest me. But I figured I might as well give it a shot. Besides since I wasn't doing that hot in music class maybe watching the movie might secure some brownie points with my teacher. As soon as I got home I asked my Mom if we could watch the movie. To this day I still remember her exact words." Do you know how long The Sound of Music is? Three hours. There is now way you are going to be able to sit still for that long." I always like a challenge. Well not only did I watch the whole movie but I was glued to my seat the entire time. I didn't even get up during the commercials. From then on I was hooked. Over the years my love for the theatre has grown even more. Of course after living in New York for the past 15 years my tastes have changed. When I first moved here I would have run to see shows like Crazy For You or 42nd Street. Heck back then I might even have liked Mary Poppins. Not that there is anything wrong with those type of shows. Their just not my cup of tea. My favorite show is Rent. It has been since the first time I saw it back in April 1996. Over the years I have seen it over 20 times. And it never gets old. I still love it for the same reasons. Even after all these years I still cry in the same places. Who says a real man can't show emotion? I remember when Rent first opened people were calling it the "Hair of the 90's". Maybe that's true. Maybe it's not. What it did was give the kids of my generation something to believe in and do something that today in my opinion doesn't happen enough in the theatre. Rent makes you think and above all it makes you care. Not to mention the fact that it showcases music that speaks to me and to so many others. People in the 60's had Hair. In the 90's it was Rent. in 2007 it is Spring Awakening. What will be Broadways next "Rock" musical. Will we have to wait another 10 years to see the next one. I hope not. And by the way the answer to my little Trivia question was "Hair" That's where it all started. By remembering the past it will help make the future even that much brighter.

Applause Theater Service offers a Weekly Broadway Show Discount Update
We like to think of ourselves as the "local Broadway ticket expert". You know, a place where people can come to for advice on what Broadway Shows to see, where to sit in the theater, how much to pay for discount to premium seating and ask just about any question they might have when planning a day or night on Broadway. We often even suggest fun places to dine before the show your going to see. Could you ask for anything more? With dozens of places to call and web sites to look through when researching Broadway events, have you considered talking to "local" ticket providers in New York City? Most people click on a web site displaying Broadway Show logos and don't realize that most of the time they are looking at similar information from web site to web site. The problem with this is simple, everyone looks the same. I have a solution for you.
Every week, I write a blog with pertinent information on up-to-date discount pricing for every Broadway Show playing. Here's my very own personal expert advice on current show discounts. If you are thinking about obtaining tickets to a show not on this list like Wicked, Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot or The Lion King-these four shows are not offering discounts right now but we can give you advice on them as well. In time they will offer discount seats for sure, once they stop "selling out" most of their performances. For now, there are still over 20 shows below I suggest you see for less than their usual "selling price".
If you feel like talking about theater, we'd love to hear from you. You can simply call us Applause Theater Service locally in New York City seven days a week at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 1-800-451-9930. "God of Carnage" Gets Rave Reviews!
Well, so far this season I think I've been right on as far as how the critics would react to certain shows. This is certainly no exception. "God of Carnage" opened this past Sunday to rave reviews and in my book deserves
to win the Tony for Best Play this year.Performed by Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden(Best Actress so far) under Matthew Warchus’s direction, the most maniacally mundane of horrors becomes magically theatrical. My side hurt from all the laughter at many points throughout the show. You must check this show out and don't wait too long to get tickets, it's a limited run and already very difficult to get tickets for. Call Applause Theatre Service now to get your tickets at a great price. 800-451-9930
I've put together most of the reviews for you to check out for yourself;
[ NYT ] Rumble in the Living Room, by Ben Brantley
God of Carnage definitely delivers the cathartic release of watching other people's marriages go boom.
[ NYP ] Upper-Middle-Class Clowns, by Elisabeth Vincentelli
After making you laugh, Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage leaves a bitter aftertaste. This Howitzer blast against bourgeois-bohemian hypocrisy could easily be staged as a drama. But it certainly isn't done that way here, and that's just fine—it's been a while since Broadway's seen such gleefully nasty fun.
[ DN ] Oh, God of Carnage, that's whacky theater, by Joe Dziemianowicz
James Gandolfini is one of four first-class actors at the top of their game in the combustible comedy God of Carnage, which opened Sunday night and could be called "Grownups Gone Wild!"
[ ND ] Reviewed by Linda Winer
It's a jungle up there. What fun. The two middle-aged couples in the artsy-stark Brooklyn town house only appear to be civilized parents discussing a playground fight between their 11-year-old boys. Pay attention to the opening music. Those tribal drums are hardly incidental. In fact, there isn't a false cue in Yasmina Reza's brutally entertaining 85-minute satire.

[ NY1 ] Reviewed by Roma Torre
Yasmina Reza, who first stormed Broadway with her Tony-winning play Art 11 years ago, returns with another crowdpleasing comedy. God of Carnage doesn't quite match the artfulness of that first triumph, but it's a winner and the theatre gods are smiling yet again.

God of Carnage, the savvy and deliciously caustic new comedy of urban ill-manners from the French writer Yasmina Reza now at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre, shoots its entire clip of sardonic bullets in just 90 minutes
[ LAT ] Reviewed by Charles McNulty Civilization's thin veneer gets mercilessly stripped in French playwright Yasmina Reza's savage comedy about two urban couples attempting to maturely resolve an altercation that occurred between their 11-year-old sons in a neighborhood park.

Civility gets thoroughly trashed—along with a few other things—in Yasmina Reza's hilarious yet surprisingly thoughtful comedy.
[ B ] Gandolfini, Daniels Turn Kids' Brawl Into Class War, by John Simon
Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage proves superior entertainment at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. What a pleasant surprise to share a walloping good time with the audience at this comedy, whose ferocious title paradoxically reinforces the subtly furibund fun.
[ V ] Reviewed by David Rooney
With all the anger in the air in these dark days for the nation, there's a certain schadenfreude in watching Yasmina Reza's acid-dipped takedown of smug self-interest in God of Carnage. Examining how the straitjacket of civilized society can barely contain the primitive beast within, the fanged comedy picks an easy target in the complacent bourgeoisie. But the savagery of its dissection of interpersonal politics—marital, sexual, and civic—is played to perfection by a scorching cast in Matthew Warchus' pungent production.
[ BS ] Reviewed by David Sheward
Yasmina Reza's latest play is a well-crafted playwriting exercise rather than a believable character study.
[ ATW ] Adults Behaving Badly, by Andy Propst
Reza uses a childish incident—one boy hit another with a stick—to explore how delicate the social fabric is that keeps us two or three steps away from barbarism. It's a thoughtful premise that can invoke gales of laughter.

Next To Normal Begins Previews on March 27
The new musical Next To Normal is set to begin performances tonight on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. Following an acclaimed run Off-Broadway last year and another run at the Arena Stage in D.C. the show will officially open on April 15. Next To Normal, which was penned by Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics), is "a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. It shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact," according to press notes.I have heard nothing but good things about this show since it first premiered last year at the Second Stage Theatre in New York and I personally can not wait to see it. In a season full of revivals and movie to musical transfers it is nice to have something original on the Great White Way.I expect Next To Normal to be a major contender come Tony time.

Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Returns to Broadway
Would you believe me if I told you that I danced with one of the young actresses tonight at the Al Hirschfeld Theater? I also got a hug from another actress at the end of this fantastic revival of HAIR, billed as an "American Tribal Love-Rock Musical". It's true friends. What a wonderful night at the theater. The original production played at the Public Theater, produced by the incomparable Joseph Papp and the New York Theater Festival in October 1967. Hair then transferred to Broadway in 1968 and opened to rave reviews. The show has played all over the world and was made into a motion picture in 1979. The Public Theater brought Hair back for a limited run in the summer of 2008, as part of its free Shakespeare in the Park season. After garnering rave reviews, it seemed only natural to bring Hair back to Broadway once again. Hair, the revival of one of the greatest rock musicals ever, returns to Broadway and opens to critics reviews on Tuesday March 31, 2009.
Famous recording artists like Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Liza Minelli, Three Dog Night and The Fifth Dimension have recorded popular songs like "Aquarius", Good Morning Starshine", "Hair" and "Let The Sunshine In".
Mr. Papp often produced shows that were dealing with the most controversial issues of the day. The original production of Hair was quite controversial, dealing with the radical representation of that time's "counterculture". One that included the use of different "lingo", style of dress and the hippie lifestyle of that era, as well as the anti-war movement of the 1960's.
Although over 40 years have gone by since this fantastic show first played on Broadway, Hair has got my vote for "Best Revival" at this years Tony Awards that air in June. Let me tell you why.
The cast of this production of Hair sings, dances and creates an unbelievable amount of positive and uplifting energy. Throughout the entire two and one half hour show, this ensemble conveys the sense that they really are a very special "tribe". You not only get the feeling that they are clearly celebrating the hope, joy, love and freedom in their lives but they manage to "include" their audience and take us along with them as well. I was told when I bought my tickets that audience members are asked to dance in the aisle or on stage and I guess it was my lucky night. Dozens of my fellow audience members were asked to join the "love fest" on stage at the Al Hirschfeld Theater tonight. We all had so much fun. You simply need to experience it for yourself if you get a chance.
If you would like to talk about the revival of Hair or possibly obtain seats for the show, you can contact Applause Theater Service in New York. They are a local expert and an officially licensed New York State ticket agency for Hair as well as all the shows playing on Broadway.
I have been fortunate to have seen several hundred shows in my life so far, enjoying most of them. But you know, tonight was something "extra special" for me. I wish everyone involved with the revival of Hair the most success. I can see this fantastic show garnering several Tony Awards. They truly deserve it.
Best wishes to my fellow theater lovers.

Looking For Theatre Tickets in London? Applause Can Help.
Travelling to London soon? Need help in getting theatre tickets to the West End? Well you have come to the right place. Applause Theater and Entertainment can be your theatre connection across the pond.
You might ask yourself why you would come to a New York ticket agent to obtain tickets for London. Our motto at Applause is “real people that you can trust”.
Let me tell you a little bit of my background. Having spent my formative years going to boarding school in England, I am half English and still carry an English passport. I landed at Applause straight out of college and have been the sales manager of London for over 12 years now. With half my family still living across the pond and having many friends who still live there, I try to get over to England at least once a year. While I am visiting, I never miss a chance to stop in London to see the latest West End smash. Some of my favorites over the last couple of years have been Billy Elliot and We Will Rock You. Also new to the West End is Priscilla Queen Of The Desert which just opened to rave reviews. I have not seen it yet in London but was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to see in Sydney, Australia two years ago when I was travelling down under and it was a night of theatre I will never forget.

Through our great relationship with an excellent ticket agent in London, we have access to the best tickets available. Not only do we have several shows in inventory, including the smash hit Billy Elliot and Wicked, getting tickets for Shakespeare in Stratford or at the Globe theatre is only a phone call away.
Getting theatre tickets in London cannot be easier. Giving advice on London would be my pleasure. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Check Out Broadways #1 Play-August:Osage County
Being in the ticket business we are often invited to see most of the shows playing On and Off-Broadway. That way when people call and ask about certain shows we can give our expert opinion. Now when it comes to my fellow co-workers and I we rarely agree on the same things when it comes to shows. That was not the case with August:Osage County. Hands down it is still one of the best shows running on Broadway. Now I know some of you may be turned off by the length of the show. It clocks in at 3 1/2 hours. Don't be. The show is a masterpiece from beginning to end. In fact it could have gone another four or five hours and I wouldn't have minded a bit. So if you are looking for a great night in the theatre look no further than August:Osage County. It is an experience that you will never forget.J.W.B.

Support Off-Broadway
Let's be honest. Most people that come to New York City to see a show want to see one on Broadway. Makes sense right? After all Broadway has been around for over one hundred years and counting. But what if the bright lights of the Great White Way is not what you are after. Well have I got the thing for you. Off-Broadway. Don't tell me you've never heard of it. Believe it or not but Off-Broadway has been a part of the New York City theatre scene for almost fifty years. Even as we speak there are over sixty shows currently running Off-Broadway and beyond. Why not give it a try. Who knows? You might even enjoy yourself.J.W.B.

Let The Sunshine In-Hair Is A Hit!
Last week I had the chance to see the current revival of Hair on Broadway. Having never seen the movie or any production for that matter I wasn't sure what to expect. Sure I knew a lot of the songs going in but that was it. Well after 2 1/2 hours I can honestly say that last Wednesday was truly one of the greatest nights that I have spent in a theater in a very long time. Not only did I love it but at the end of the show the entire audience leaped to their feet and gave the cast a very deserved standing ovation. Now for those of you who think you may be too old to appreciate it, or too young to understand the show or it's message then I have news for you. You're not. It doesn't matter if you're sixteen or sixty. Hair is about love and being happy with who you are no matter what others may think about you. Hair is universal. It will change your life. It did mine. I hope it will do the same for you.J.W.B.

Go See Jersey Boys Today...You Will Be Happy You Did!
Jersey Boys, winner of 4 Tony Awards including best musical in 2006, has been playing to sold out audiences night after night at the August Wilson Theatre. Sixties sensations The Four Seasons come to life in a musical tale about guys from the 'hood who make good. The story of the legendary Four Seasons, blue-collar boys who formed a singing group and reached the heights of rock 'n' roll stardom. The musical features such Seasons' hits as "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Oh What a Night" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."Oh what a night!…….it certainly was for me the first time I went to see it. Not being around in the 60’s and being not too familiar with the group the Four Seasons or their music I was not crazy about sitting through a story of their life. How wrong was I? The show was great. I even found myself singing along to some of the songs by the second act. I actually knew these songs..who knew? I also have a secret to share with you. I sat in the last row of the theatre and the view was great! Much of the action takes place on a raised proscenium, easy viewing from the last row of the mezzanine…who wants to hurt their head looking up in the orchestra. So, looking for the hottest selling show at a great price? Call Applause.

Revival of "Hair" is Amazing!
What a fabulous night at the theatre. "Hair" the musical is certainly the most
fun I've had at any show this season! Where did it come from? I mean no one, I don't think, expects this show to succeed. After seeing the show last night at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, I think it's going to be the big hit of the season both critically and at the box office. The audience went nuts! Everyone thought that this years Tony for Best Revival would go to either Guys and Dolls(terrible reviews) or West Side Story(which opens tonight and I don't think the critics will be very kind, I was disappointed), but my feeling is that "Hair" will easily win Best Revival and hopefully the director will win as well. This show is not easy to stage and she does so brilliantly and uses every inch of the theatre to its maximum potential.
Everything from the amazing lighting, incredible sound and band on stage to the unbelievable cast. I went into the show having never seen a production of it nor have I seen the movie. I knew a few of the great songs of course, but I wasn't expecting much from it. Boy was I wrong. I couldn't take the smile off my face and I was rockin and rollin in my seat. I even got a hug from one of the hippie girls. Without giving anything away, this show has th
e audience up and dancing at the end and no one wanted to leave the theater! I left on a high without using the drugs! There is some strong language and sexual content(including some full frontal nudity at the end of the first act), but it's done tastefully and I think its fine for mature teens.Believe me when I say, you'll have a blast at this high energy show! DO NOT wait to get your tickets to this show. Because after it opens to great reviews and word of mouth spreads, you may be in for a long wait for tickets. Get them now, trust me. Broadway Theater Ticket Experts at Your Service
I was just reading a business blog written by Seth Godin at http://www.sethgodin.com/sg/. The blog post is called "Where have all the agents gone"? Seth talks about how many "middlemen" types there are in the service business- travel agents, stockbrokers, real estate agents, ticket brokers and other agent types are often being bypassed by consumers using a computer. He says the airlines stopped paying travel agents commissions because they were making more than the airlines themselves. He also infers that some homeowners don't want to pay real estate brokers the 6 % commission or so that they usually charge for their services.
Mr. Godin points out that anyone in the service business that simply helps you find "a human approximation of Google" probably won't be needed in the very near future. I wholeheartedly agree with him on this.
Our company provides theater tickets to all the Broadway Shows in New York. So do hundreds of others. So why use our company Applause Theater Service? Anyone can search dozens of web sites and see hundreds of different seating selections but why use Applause. Mr. Godin talks about service organizations using a "differentiated service". One that is worth paying for of course. At Applause, we focus our area of expertise on Broadway Shows, not every event in the country. Most ticket web sites try to be all things to all people, selling every event one can buy a ticket for
but being "expert" at very little. This is where Applause comes in. Sure we can secure tickets for the Super Bowl or the Big East Tournament or even get you seats to any baseball game to any stadium in the country. But could we possibly know everything about every event and have expert knowledge of every layout of every stadium or theater in the entire country? Could anyone really? Of course not, that's why we keep our focus on Broadway theater.Applause subscribes to Seth Godin's basic philosophy regarding "agents" of any kind. Sure we sell theater tickets. Like I said, lots of companies do.
Here's the difference in using Applause. When someone calls Applause looking for tickets to
shows on Broadway, we spend time talking to you on the phone first. Then we ask questions so that we can offer the best seating arrangements at the best prices. Lots of ticket companies just list tons of seat locations and a basic theater map. Most of the time many of the seat locations and prices start to look blurry to a shopper, adding confusing to the decision making process of "which tickets should I buy". Seating is just one area of concern for ticket buyers. What about price? Did you know that most of the time people pay more for tickets to Broadway and to other Nationwide Events than they have to? A little conversation can go a long way friends. A transaction is not something we think will separate us from the thousands of others selling tickets for Broadway. Personal service will.Yes a little thing like personal service can go a long way to help a potential customer trust us with their ticket needs, and not a competitor. Like talking on the phone. Taking our time to inform and educate a shopper about the available options in ticket buying.
It comes down to TRUST and ADDING VALUE as Mr. Godin often refers to.
People want to buy from companies that are truthful and offer real, good "old fashioned" customer service. Like in the old days.At Applause, I personally spend as much time making restaurant suggestions to people shopping with our service. I can't tell you how many customers are so happy to have a service that suggests good places to eat before the theater as well as suggestions on shopping, sightseeing and other "things to do in New York City". People can always find tickets at lower prices but the "value" that Applause adds with our wealth of knowledge to "everything in New York City" is the single biggest factor that clearly separates us from the pack of other ticket sellers.
All you have to do is shop around and then let us be of service whenever your plans include seeing a Broadway show, dining and anything else you want to do in New York. Although I guess
I'm asking you to trust us (and we don't even know each other yet), I will give you my personal guarantee that once you try our ticket service, you'll be glad you did.Oh, I almost forgot, in case you want to call us, Applause's local number is 212-307-7050 or you can call toll free at 800-451--9930. Applause is an officially New York State licensed ticket agency that has been providing a personal ticket service for over 21 years now. Here's a link to our testimonials page from "real customers" like you.
We hope to hear from you soon.

Norman Seeks to Conquer Broadway this Spring
Add Alan Ayckbourn’s “Norman Conquests” to a busy spring season on Broadway. Mr. Ayckbourn’s 1973 comic trilogy of interlocking plays, which was recently revived at the Old Vic Theater in London, is headed to the Circle in the Square Theater with its six-member cast intact, the show’s publicists said in a release. In each of the trilogy’s plays, an assistant librarian named Norman (played by Stephen Mangan) tries to seduce a different woman during a chaotic weekend. The plays, directed by Matthew Warchus (who also directed the recent Broadway revival of “Boeing-Boeing“), will run on a rotating schedule, and all three will be presented consecutively on Saturdays. “The Norman Conquests” is to begin previews on April 7 and open April 23; its limited run is scheduled through July 25.Having done an Ayckbourn play myself, How the Other Half Loves, I am very much looking forward to this trilogy. Call Applause now to get your tickets to this fun fest. Call and ask for an Insider Deal for some extra savings. 800-451-9930

Shrek Comes Alive On Broadway

I'll be the first to admit that I was not looking forward to seeing Shrek on Broadway. Having never seen any of the movies the thought of a singing green ogre did not interest me in the slightest. However after some prodding from my co-workers I decided to give it a shot. The ticket was free after all so what did I have to lose? So there I sat on a cold Thursday in November at the Broadway Theater waiting for the curtain to rise on the unknown. Well I guess the old saying is true."Never judge a book by it's cover." I loved Shrek from beginning to end. I'm even man enough to admit that I teared up a few times. Now if that doesn't prove how much I loved the show then nothing will.

Don't Forget The Lion King on Broadway

When it comes to shows on Broadway, Disney sure knows how to put on a spectacular. The Lion King is one of three Disney shows currently on Broadway and happens to be one of my favorites. I always said if I died after the opening number I would die happy. The Lion King tells the story of a young lion cub named Simba who struggles as he takes on the responsibilities of becoming an adult and becoming the future king.
With Music and Lyrics by Sir Elton Jon and Tim Rice, and the direction of Julie Taymor The Lion King is a show sure to please all ages and is not to be missed while in New York.

New York Mets And Yankees Tickets On Sale Now At Applause

With opening day only a few weeks away baseball fever here in New York City is heating up. The Mets and Yankees both look to rebound from disappointing 2008 seasons and get back to the playoffs. This offseason both teams addressed their major weakness from last year, the Mets signing relief pitchers JJ Putz and Francisco Rodriguez (aka KRod) to solidify their bullpen which struggled mightily last year, and the Yankees signing starting pitchers AJ Burnett and CC Sabathia to give them 1 of the best starting rotations in baseball. With David Wright and Jose Reyes leading the way again the Mets will look to overtake the world champion Phillies for NL East supremacy, and the Yankees figure to battle it out all year with the rival Red Sox in the AL East.
And of course both teams are opening up brand new ballparks this season, Citi Field and the New Yankee Stadium, so that only adds to the excitement of the upcoming season. As a lifelong Met fan and baseball fan I can't wait to check out both ballparks, they both look great and promise to provide great views of the field whether you’re in the 1st row or last row. Its sure to be another action packed baseball season in Queens and the Bronx. So give us a call at Applause for tickets to the games you want at the prices you want.

The Broadway Production of "Mary Stuart" is Now On Sale With Applause Theatre Service
This is a big Broadway happening for sure! The first Broadway production of MARY STUART in almost 40 years! The critically acclaimed Donmar Warehouse production direct from London, starring Janet McTeer as Mary Queen of Scots and Harriet Walter as Elizabeth I will begin performances Tuesday, March 30 at the Broadhurst, prior to an opening night on Sunday, April 19McTeer and Walter will be recreating the performances that dazzled London, joined by a stellar supporting company of 11 actors, performing Peter Oswald’s thrilling new version of Friedrich Schiller’s classic play under the direction of Phyllida Lloyd. The production is currently in rehearsal in New York. I love great theater, and I have to tell you the buzz surrounding this production could not be bigger. Everyone I know cannot wait to see this!

Seduction, greed and deception lie at the heart of the bitter rivalry between Mary, Queen of Scots (Janet McTeer) and her cousin, Elizabeth I (Harriet Walter) of England. After being implicated in her husband’s murder, Mary turns to Elizabeth for help but finds her cousin distrustful of her motives. Thus begins a bloody feud that will threaten not just their family bond, but the crown of England… MARY STUART tells the story of two iconic women whose lust for power reveals one of the most thrilling displays of passion and politics the world has ever seen.
Ben Brantley, New York Times, hailed this production of MARY STUART as “Ripping. A stage burner of a revival. Mary Stuart is portrayed to a red-blooded fare-thee-well by Janet McTeer. Queen Elizabeth I is portrayed with glittering iciness by Harriet Walter. Mary Stuart has never seemed more pertinent than it does in this vivid incarnation, staged by Phyllida Lloyd.” The Daily Telegraph pronounced it “Exhilarating… Pure Class!” The Times raved, “Terrific Acting, Terrific Theatre, Terrific Schiller”. The Daily Mail called the production “Unforgettable”. The Observer raved, “Phyllida Lloyd has provided a gleaming, intense Mary Stuart. It’s thrillingly staged and acted to the hilt”. The Sunday Times claimed, “Both female leads crackle with the kind of gun-powder charisma that sparks devotion and forments intrigue. In this fine production, every lie, every deception, rings true”.
Janet McTeer returns to New York for the first time since she electrified Broadway with her Tony Award-winning portrayal of Nora in A Doll’s House. She won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the celebrated film Tumbleweeds. Harriet Walter, considered one of England’s greatest classical actresses, is a three-time Olivier Award winner for her performances in Twelfth Night, A Question of Geography and Three Sisters. Film credits include the Academy Award-nominated Atonement, Babel and Sense & Sensibility.

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker
Having never traveled across the pond before you would think that I would be the last person to write a blog about London right? Except for the occasional trip back home to Illinois to visit my family I rarely leave the New York area. Why leave? New York is the greatest city in the world after all. Now don't get me wrong. I'm sure London has a lot to offer besides rain and smog. I myself have been known to enjoy a nice stroll in the rain from time to time. But enough about me and my walking habits. I am here to discuss the current London theatre scene. The good news is there are over a hundred shows playing in London at
the present time. From new plays and musicals, to some of Shakespeare's finest plays there is something for everyone to see and enjoy. Maybe one of these days I'll get over there and see what all the fuss is about. Who knows? I might even enjoy myself.J.W.B.

Critics Love "Blithe Spirit" and its Star Angela Lansbury!
Spring doesn't officially arrive until next weekend, but last night, a blast of warm, comic air blew over Broadway with the opening of director Michael Blakemore's delightful revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Shubert Theatre. I saw this production a couple of weeks ago with the rest of the crew here at Applause and we fell in love with the show, its cast and most especially the legendary Angela Lansbury. What a simple pleasant evening of laughs and great entertainment. Most of the critics seem to agree with me on this. I've taken all of the critics reviews and posted them below for your reading pleasure.[ NYT ] The Medium as the Messenger, by Ben Brantley

This genial but bumpy new revival of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit stars Angela Lansbury in her juiciest role in years.
[ NYP ] Spirit Willing, Flash Weak, by Elisabeth Vincentelli
Like her character, daffy medium Madame Arcati, Angela Lansbury creates mischievous chaos in Blithe Spirit—some of her co-stars seem to struggle to keep pace with her somewhat loose M.O.
[ DN ] Angela Lansbury moves us, but Blithe Spirit doesn't, by Joe Dziemianowicz
Watching the 83-year-old Lansbury work her magic is endless fun. Otherwise, director Michael Blakemore doesn't offer much in terms of imagination in this revival.
[ ND ] Angela Lansbury takes Blithe Spirit to heights, by Linda Winer
Angela Lansbury is delicious, but it's odd that director Michael Blakemore does not locate more of the luxurious, brittle sheen and the high-style physical humor in this farce about a married novelist bewitched by the ghost of his first wife.
[ NY1 ] Reviewed by David Cote
Broadway will always have its ghosts. They say the specters of past troupers and producers hover through the back alleys and theaters of the Great White Way. Well, now there's another apparition to be found on the Rialto, and it's frightfully funny. The play is Blithe Spirit, the champagne-light supernatural farce by Noel Coward, and it should continue to haunt the Shubert for a good long time.
[ AP ] Lansbury and company wittily spin Blithe Spirit, by Michael Kuchwara
Light and airy requires heavy lifting—theatrically speaking. And for the most part, the starry cast of the latest Broadway revival of Blithe Spirit delivers the goods, artfully keeping the classic Noel Coward comedy spinning merrily.
[ B ] Lansbury's Comic Psychic Lights Up Fervent Spirit, by John Simon

When a scintillating comedy, masterly direction and superior performances come together, what have you got? A rip-roaring revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit that lights up Broadway's Shubert Theatre.
[ V ] Reviewed by David Rooney
While the dry martinis flow freely among hosts and guests alike in Blithe Spirit, those libations do little to loosen up Michael Blakemore's classy but stiff Broadway revival. There are sparkling moments, thanks mostly to the light touch of the sublime Jayne Atkinson and the comedic life-force of Angela Lansbury because she's, well, Angela Lansbury. But overall this is a wispy ectoplasm of the 1941 Noel Coward ghost comedy rather than a full-bodied materialization.
[ BS ] Reviewed by David Sheward
This Blithe Spirit is like spending a pleasant afternoon tea with a favorite aunt. You'll be served familiar treats and hear familiar stories, but with Angela Lansbury and friends handing out the goodies, you know you'll enjoy yourself.
[ CU ] Reviewed by Elyse Sommer
With New Yorkers being blitzed with bad news about the economy, their job security and the difficulties of ending two unpopular wars, the producers of the latest revival of this wartime-prompted ghost story may well be right in thinking that it will once again prove to be a perfect escape from grim reality.

Waiting for Godot Comes to Broadway, Starts Performances April 3, 2009
If you've never had the chance to see Nathan Lane (famous for his starring roles in The Odd Couple
and a Best Actor Tony Award for The Producers) in a Broadway Show, now is your chance theater friends. Beginning Friday April 3, 2009 you can get to see Mr. Lane along with Bill Irwin (who is best known for his Tony Award-winning Best Actor role as George in Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolff in 2005) at Studio 54 in New York. Mr. Irwin has won a total of 5 Tony Awards, 4 of them for Largely New York, a show he wrote, directed, starred and choreographed himself several years ago. Mr. Irwin is really a vaudeville-style stage actor and clown with many talents.Mr. Lane and Mr. Irwin will be co-starring in a revival of a very unique comedy called Waiting for Godot. Written by Samuel Beckett with direction by Anthony Page and scenic design by Santo Loquasto, Waiting for Godot tells the tale of 2 men, Vladamir and Estragon that are waiting on a barren stretch of road waiting for someone named Godot. As the men wait, they occupy themselves eating, sleeping, talking, arguing, singing, exercising, swapping hats and playing games together. They even admit that they wouldn't recognize Godot if they saw him. They imagine that things are not what they appear to be while waiting. It sounds like one crazy way to "pass the time" right? Many who have seen Waiting for Godot have interpreted the play to signify mankind's true search for real life meaning.
I've seen Nathan Lane in several movies and on the Broadway stage numerous times and have heard that Bill Irwin is "one of the funniest actors" ever to appear on a stage or in film. I'm planning on seeing the show during the first week or two of previews at Studio 54 in New York City. I am hoping this theater won't be too large a venue as the last time it played, the show venue was at the Mitzi Newhouse Theater in Lincoln Center. A much smaller theater for sure.
Right now, if you call Applause Theater Service in New York City, a New York State officially licensed ticket agency for Waiting for Godot and every Broadway show in town-they can get you amazing seats at a big discount for this show. Applause is open seven days a week from 8am till 8pm on most days with a friendly group of ticket experts. They know all about Broadway shows and even suggest fun places to eat. All you have to do is ask. Here's a current listing of what's on Broadway now. Click here.
Don't forget to ask for the Waiting for Godot discount ticket offer. take care now.

If You Haven't Seen Shrek-The Musical, What Are You Waiting For??
Shrek is the Swamp King of Broadway! At least that's what I believe and I'm sure Shrek himself believes. Shrek is a fabulous new musical extravaganza that seems to be struggling a bit at the box office right now, probably due to the obvious, our bad economy maybe?! It's just a matter of bad timing for the show. If this show had opened up a few years ago, this would be the monster hit it's supposed to be and should be. No pun intended. The cast is amazing. Heck, it has the Queen of Broadway herself, Miss Sutton Foster and Mr Showstopper himself Christopher Sieber who I loved in Monty Python's Spamalot. Everyone that I send to see this show enjoys it immensely. You'll laugh till it hurts and never once be bored! Dreamworks went all out for their first ever venture on Broadway and spent millions on sets and costumes. The movie is one of the highest grossing films in the history of motion pictures and I feel this show deserves to run on Broadway and become one of the best and longest running family shows ever. And adults, just know that this show ain't just for the kiddies! Most of the humor actually is for an older audience.Anyway, make an effort to check this show out this Spring and Summer. You won't be disappointed! If it is the tough times that's holding you back from coming into New York to see it, fear not! Applause Theatre Service has access to what we call our Insider Deal where we can offer great discounted deals on most performances for the very best seats. Just call an Applause Sales Expert now at 800-451-9930 and we'll hook you up! Come on, we can all use a happy break and take a visit to Shrek Land!

Exit the King is One Brilliantly Bizarre Broadway Show!
All I can say is Wow! I saw a preview performance of "Exit the King" last night and sat sixth row center orchestra at a sold out show. One of the wonderful perks of working for Applause Theatre Service. I was captivated from the very beginning with it's Vaudeville type introductions of all the lead performers in the show. I won't give anything away here in this blog but only tell you a bit about the performers and crazy story being told.
Academy Award-winners Geoffrey Rush(one of my all time favorite actors/remember the movie
Shine?) as King Berenger and Susan Sarandon(Dead Man Walking) as Queen Marguerite star in Eugene Ionesco's "Exit The King" on Broadway. This production is Rush's Broadway debut. It is a limited engagement that will run for 14 weeks only, through Sunday June 14, 2009.
EXIT THE KING also stars Screen Actors Guild Award-winner Lauren Ambrose (Awake and Sing!, "Six Feet Under") as Queen Marie, Tony Award- winner Andrea Martin (My Favorite Year, Young Frankenstein) as Juliette, William Sadler(The Shawshank Redemption, "Roswell," Julius Caesar) as The Doctor and Brian Hutchison (From Up Here) as The Guard.
EXIT THE KING is a hilarious and poignant comedy about a megalomaniacal ruler, King Berenger (Rush) whose incompetence has left his country in near ruin. Despite the efforts of Queen Marguerite (Sarandon) and the other members of the court to convince the King he has only 90 minutes left to live, he refuses to relinquish any control.
I felt the two standouts in the show were certainly Geoffrey Rush (who is a shoe in to win the Tony Award for Best Actor this year, if he doesn't I will drop dead!) and the always funny and incredibly talented comedic actress Andrea Martin as the Nurse to the King and Queens. Susan Sarandon is just gorgeous to look at and one of my all time favorite actresses. I felt she was channeling the Wicked Witch in the movie Enchanted and was just fine but really only came alive towards the end of the 2 and 1/2 hour show. Ms Ambrose who I loved in Six Feet Under also gives a very credible performance but maybe trying a bit too hard at times. William Sadler is wonderful as the whacked out doctor/executioner/scientist(much too involved to explain that one!). But guys, let me tell you, this is the Geoffrey Rush show! You cannot take your eyes off of him every moment he is on (and off) stage. His bit with the marching band alone is worth the price of admission and should win him the Tony! It's bizarre folks, don't get me wrong and the story is not for everyone and will probably leave some saying what the heck? Give it a chance and stay for the whole show. Just remember that you're watching one of the all time best actors and performances ever on a Broadway stage!

Need an escape? Go see Guys and Dolls on Broadway today.
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Guys and Dolls currently playing at the Nederlander theatre. I hate to admit it but the night I went I was not in the mood to see a show. I was leaving on a two week trip and had things to take care of. I really did not have much interest either. Just another revival hitting Broadway. I guess after 14 years selling tickets I have become spoiled. There will always be another show to see tomorrow. I did not really know the story of Guys and Dolls and what I did know about it just did not seem that interesting. I did however make myself go. It is my job after all to be able to sell the show. I should at least know what I am talking about. How glad I was that I went. From the opening act I was sucked in.As the show progressed I realized that so many of the songs were familiar to me. I was suddenly excited to be able to see the story behind all the famous songs I was listening to. "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," "A Bushel and a Peck," "Luck Be a Lady," "Fugue for Tinhorns," "Marry the Man Today" were the most memorable to me. Classic Broadway songs set to a classic Broadway story. A fly-by-night gambler woos a Salvation Army lass, and a showgirl tries to hook the founder of "the oldest, established, permanent, floating crap game in New York." Who could ask for more in a Broadway show. I certainly couldn't. Oliver Platt most recently seen in “Shining City” and Lauren Graham famous for her role in TV show “Gilmore Girls both star in Guys and Dolls. When I left the theater a friend asked me what I thought. My answer was that I was so glad I went. Guys and Dolls was definitely worth seeing. My advice to you my readers is go check it out yourself. You will be happy that you did. I know was.

Mary Poppins on Broadway-Why not get great tickets at a discount?
Hi Broadway fans,Did you know that one of the most popular shows playing for the last few years on Broadway, Mary Poppins, is now offering some discount seats for many performances in March and April of 2009? If you haven't had a chance to see this uplifting family musical by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, now might be a great time to see a fantastic show, and at a cut-rate price. Why not save the money and buy yourself dinner at a nice New York theater district restaurant. Makes sense right?
For those of you that may not know it, Mary Poppins tells the stories of P.L. Travers and the Academy Award-winning film based on the Mary Poppins series of books. The 1964 film was very popular and had Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews in the starring roles. The story is a simple and very cute one. A "magical" nanny flies into town and takes a job looking after 2 children in the Banks family home. Mary Poppins has some very special qualities and a unique outlook on life. She has a wonderful effect on the entire Banks family and the people of the town as well.
Mary Poppins has terrific music with many "singable" songs as well, like "Chim Chim Cher-ee", "Let's Go Fly A Kite" and the one that almost everyone knows-"Supercalifragilisticexpialadocius". There lots of the usual Disney "special effects" throughout the show. You'll really love it friends.
Right now, if you make a call to Applause Theater Service in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, we can secure amazing seats for Mary Poppins at a discount price that is available for March and April 2009, with very few restrictions as well.
At this time Scarlett Strallen plays the role of Mary Poppins, Adam Fiorentino plays the role of Bert and Broadway's very own Rebecca Luker plays Winnifred Banks. They are supported by a very talented and amazing ensemble as well.
The show plays 8 performances a week, Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, a 2pm matinee on Wednesday and Saturday with shows on Sunday at 1 and 630 pm. They are off on Mondays and Tuesdays right now.
Disney's other two very popular shows on Broadway are available by contacting Applause also. They are the long-running The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, two of our biggest selling shows right now.
If you think you might want information about other Broadway theater, we have an updated listing of all the Broadway Shows. Just click here for the listing.
Applause is a very well known and legitimate ticket seller, operating in the New York theater ticket industry for 21 years now. We are considered reliable experts in our field. We hope you'll allow us the pleasure of be of service to you at some time in the future, whenever your plans include seeing a Broadway show.

Grey's Anatomy Star Chandra Wilson Joins "CHICAGO" as 'Mama Morton' 6/8
Well being a huge Grey's Anatomy fan, you can imagine how excited I was to hear that Dr. Bailey is coming back to Broadway for a limited time to co-star in "Chicago-The Musical". This is one talented actress who is part of a great acting ensemble on TV and I'm sure will give a great performance on stage. Three-time Emmy Award nominee and "Grey's Anatomy" star Chandra Wilson steps into the celebrated role of Matron "Mama" Morton, the reigning cell block diva of the smash hit musical CHICAGO, for a four-week limited engagement, Monday, June 8 through Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th St.). For her critically-acclaimed portrayal of
Dr. Miranda Bailey on "Grey's Anatomy," Wilson has earned not only three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, but also a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, a second Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Drama Series Ensemble and three NAACP Image Awards. Now celebrating more than twelve glorious years of girls, glitz and glamour on the Great White Way, on Tuesday, March 24 the record-breaking smash hit musical CHICAGO will become the seventh longest-running production in Broadway history (surpassing Rent with 5,125 total performances to-date) ... and it still shows no sign of ever slowing down!
The record-breaking London production of CHICAGO continues to hold the record as the longest-running American musical in West End history. CHICAGO is also currently on tour throughout the U.S. and Canada, with international tours to commence in Australia and the United Kingdom this month (March 2009).

Hair To Open On Broadway This Month
HAIR...Long beautiful hair! I keep hearing things like the only people who will be able to identify with this show will be Hippies from the 60's and 70's. Although I was born in the 60's, and might have wanted to be a hippie it just was a bit before my time. However, as a teenager in the late 70's and involved in musical theatre I fell in love with the movie. So much so that friends and I would hang out on the weekends watching the movie...and I don't just mean once or twice. Now other than being in love with the whole rebel against society idea that most teens (yesterday and today) identify with, the closest I could identify with the war issues in 1979 was that I was required to register with the Draft. Believe it or not I was not really sure what that meant, but it still scared me. Regardless, I fell in love with the movie. So, last year when it opened in the park I was excited at the prospect of seeing a live production of one of my favorite movie musicals. Guess what? I got lucky enough to see it on opening night in Central Park. I wasn't sure what to expect as I know the stage show and movie are a bit different. But let me say that when the show started and the opening number of Aquarius began, I had chills. The evening was amazing and ended with the most thrilling part of all. When they began to sing Let The Sunshine In the heavens opened up and began to pour. Now at first I thought this was part of the show and said "cool". I then realized that it was pouring on the entire audience as well. The audience was invited to join the cast dancing on stage, as the rain soaked all of the dancing bodies...men, women, black, white, young and old I realized that this is really what the show is about and why it has so much appeal. It is about the liberation of people...people loving other people. Now, I know that the show will not be quite the same as it has moved inside the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. But I am sure the feeling and the sentiment will remain and I can't wait to see it and to feel that all over again!

Phantom of the Opera on Broadway-How to get Insider Discount Tickets Today
For over 21 years now The Phantom of the Opera has been playing to excited live audiences that love Broadway theater. It is the longest running show in the history of Broadway. The show plays all over the world and has grossed over $5 billion dollars in ticket sales. I believe it is the largest single entertainment attraction in the world. The Phantom of the Opera is based on the famous Gaston Leroux novel that tells the story of a mysterious masked man that lurks in the basement and haunts the players at The Paris Opera House. The phantom falls madly in love with Christine, the new young opera soprano wanting her to flee with him while he terrorizes everyone else in the opera house. The Phantom of the Opera has beautiful classical music written by the great Andrew Lloyd Webber, with direction by the legendary Harold Prince.
The Phantom of the Opera won seven 1988 Tony Awards including Best Musical. For over 2300 performances now, Howard McGillin has played the leading role of the phantom, more than any other actor around the world. Marni Raab plays the role of Christine and Tim Martin Gleason plays Raoul (Christine's love interest).
I just found out that on April 24, 2009, Ryan Silverman will take over the role of Raoul in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera. Mr. Silverman has played the role of Raoul in Las Vegas for some time now. He will become the 3rd Las Vegas player to participate in the Broadway version in the last year or so. He will become the 13th person to play Raoul on Broadway. Mr. Silverman recently returned from London after playing the role of "Tony" in West Side Story. He made his Broadway debut in Cry-Baby last year as well.
I have seen The Phantom of the Opera several times in the last 21 years. As I recall, I first started my own Broadway theater ticket service with my friend and partner Bill just before The Phantom of the Opera first began playing on Broadway in New York City. It was the hottest show we ever sold tickets for when the business started and for many years that followed. There have been and will be many other hit shows that play on Broadway, yet I'm not sure we will ever again see a "long term" live theater event like this show ever again friends.
Right now, my company Applause Theater Service,an officially New York State licensed ticket agency operating in the theater district on New York, has access to discount tickets for The Phantom of the Opera for most performances (except Saturday evenings). Reason's To Be Pretty To Begin Performances On March 13
Neil Labute's reasons to be pretty will make it's Broadway bow tomorrow night at the Lyceum Theatre. The show which played to critical acclaim Off-Broadway will also mark the Broadway debut for the playwright. Reasons to be pretty, according to press notes, "confronts America's obsession with physical beauty headlong. In Neil LaBute's new play, Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his off-handed remarks about a female co-worker’s pretty face (and his girlfriend's lack thereof) get back to said girlfriend. But that's just the beginning."
Steppenwolf actor and director will helm the four person cast.(Marin Ireland, Steven Pasquale, Piper Perabo and Thomas Sadoski)Performance Schedule:
Tuesday 7pm
Wednesday - Saturday 8pm
Wednesday and Saturday 2pm
Sunday 3pm
Show Run Time:

New Revival Of West Side Story Is a Gem
Having never seen a stage version of West Side Story I was very excited to see the current production. All I can say is "Wow!" I can't remember the last time I was so moved by a Broadway show. Now sure there are a few kinks that need to be fixed, but I personally think that any kinks they need to work out will be gone by the March 19th opening.Every performer from top to bottom was outstanding. Although If I had to pick a favorite in the show it would be Anita played by the talented and sexy Karen Olivo. She has been a favorite of mine ever since her fantastic performance in In The Heights. Why she wasn't nominated for a Tony I will never know. Well not only do I see her getting a nomination for her moving performance in West Side Story but I am placing my bet now that she will win the Tony Award at this years ceremony. Today's Daily News did a feature story on Miss Olivo that you might want to check out.
Anyway back to West Side Story. There's not much left to say except go see it.You know the story. You know the songs. Now experience West Side Story live on Broadway. You will remember it for the rest of your life.

Rock Out To Rock of Ages Thru Applause

I have to tell you how happy I am that Rock of Ages is moving into a Broadway theatre March 17th after a very successful run Off-Broadway.
This show transported me back to my younger years. Rock of Ages has all the hits from Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar and many others.
Taking place in 1987 on The Sundset Strip in LA's most famous rock club, it tells the story of a small town girl that meets a big city rocker and how they fall in love.
Although intended for mature audiences (14+), I took my 8 1/2 year old daughter who loved it as much as I did. ( I did have to remind her that what happens in the theatre stays in the theatre).
So all that's left to say is .... If you are ready to Rock Out.. Call Applause today.....

Matthew Broderick Returns to Broadway in The Philanthropist in April 2009
A few weeks ago a saw Matthew Broderick standing next to his "real life" wife Sarah Jessica Parker at The Oscars out in Hollywood. They were being interviewed on the red carpet of course. Matthew usually seems kind of reserved to me, almost on the quiet side. The reason I was thinking about this was because whenever I have the chance to see Matthew Broderick perform on a Broadway stage-his stage characters are always "quite talkative" to say the least. Interesting contrast I guess.Never the less, Mr. Broderick is returning to Broadway once again in a new Roundabout Theater Company comedy called The Philanthropist. The show takes place at an elite British university where we see "nice guy" professor Phil who refuses to go along with his fellow colleagues extremely critical views. What happens is he winds up hurting his very own credibility in the often dysfunctional world of education. And in his bedroom as well. Mr. Broderick was last seen on Broadway in The Producers and The Odd Couple yet he has seen great success in film and television throughout his entire career.
Joining Mr. Broderick on stage will be Steven Weber, star of the television series called Wings some years back with a most recent stint on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He has done lots of television and films over a very successful career, an actor who always seems to be working. Mr. Weber replaced Mr. Broderick performing the role of Leo Bloom in The Producers on Broadway. So to me, it's kind of great that they are performing together this time around. Rounding out the cast are Jonathan Cake, Anna Madeley, Tate Ellington, Jennifer Mudge and Samantha Soule, all actors with many noteworthy credits in the arts. Academy Award-winning writer Christoper Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) is the playwright and direction is by David Grindley (Pygmalion)
The Philanthropist is a strictly limited engagement. Performances will start on April 10, 2009 and run through June 28, 2009 so you may want to consider buying tickets if you think this show might be a good one for you.
By the way, Applause Theater Service, a New York State officially licensed ticket agency has discount tickets for The Philanthropist for many performances prior to opening night critic's reviews. They know where the best seats for the best prices are for this show. And if you think you may want to see other Broadway Shows, simply click here to check out our up-to-date listing of Broadway theater.
Enjoy your day or night at The Philanthropist or show of your choosing. To me friends, there's nothing like live Broadway theater.

Wicked on Broadway-Still an All-Time Favorite of Mine
I've seen dozens of Broadway shows in the last few years and enjoyed most of them. But for my money, there's nothing like "live musical theater" in my mind. Although my company Applause Theater Service sells all the Broadway Shows in New York City, day in and day out-Wicked sells much more frequently than most others. I've seen it three times now and it is very special indeed. If you haven't had a chance to see Wicked in New York, this amazing story tells us about the Wicked Witch of the West called Elphaba (played by Nicole Parker) and her nemesis, Glinda, The Good Witch (played by Alli Mauzey). In short, Wicked is really the untold musical story of The Wizard of Oz, before Dorothy dropped in so to speak. A "pre-quel" to The Wizard of Oz. The show is based on the best-selling novel by Gregory McGuire with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. Joe Mantello directs this fantastic show.
In 2004 Wicked was nominated for 10 Tony Awards. The show has a great cast of characters with spectacular scenic design and musical staging by Eugene Lee and Wayne Cilento, lighting by Kenneth Posner and costumes by Susan Hilferty. Wicked's musical score ranges from contemporary to theatrical with many of them becoming quite memorable for a long time to come. The show is 2 and 1/2 hours long with one intermission and there's a cool souvenir stand in the lobby across from the box office.
As I mentioned previously, Wicked is a big ticket seller on Broadway. It has all the talent both on stage and off stage with a unique story and great musical theater fun. A truly unique piece of theater. I think it will play New York's Gershwin Theater for many more year to come.
Right now if you think you may want to see Wicked on Broadway, you can simply contact the friendly ticket experts at Applause in New York. They are licensed by the State of New York Department of Licensing and have been in business for 21 years now. They know the show, the seating chart, the best seats for the best price and even where to grab a bite before the theater. Could you ask for anything more...
Applause is open seven days a week, 365 days a year. Their New York City phone number is 212-307-7050 or you are welcome to call toll free at 800-451-9930. They love talking about Wicked and also are happy to speak with you about all of the Broadway Shows in New York. Need a list of Broadway Shows? Click here. We just updated it today.
Remember when you need tickets or want to know about places to eat before the show, you now have a place to call. If others have a need for Applause's expert advice we would greatly appreciate a recommendation. Our best business is done by "word of mouth". When people are happy with our service, there's no greater satisfaction for us.
Enjoy Wicked or the show of your choosing. As I said before, there's nothing like "live musical theater". Have fun at the show.

Irena's Vow, with Tovah Feldshuh, Begins Broadway Previews tonight, March 10
I'm sorry to say that I missed Tovah Feldshuh's last smash hit on Broadway "Golda's Balcony". Well you can be sure I'm going to catch her this go around after reading some of her rave reviews from out of town. The Directors Company production of "Irena's Vow", which played an extended engagement at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in fall 2008, arrives on Broadway with its original star — four-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh — March 10 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The entire company — including Sandi Carroll, Tracee Chimo, Steven Hauck, Scott Klavan, Peter Reznikoff, Thomas Ryan, Gene Silvers, John Stanisci and Maja Wampuszyc — now reprise their work for Broadway audiences.
Irena's Vow, according to press notes, "is the uplifting true story about one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of World War II. During the German occupation of Poland, Irena Gut Opdyke (Feldshuh), a Polish Catholic, was forced to work as head housekeeper for a very prominent Nazi major. Over a two year period of service, Irena would risk her own life in order to save the lives of twelve Jewish refugees whom she secretly took under her care. Irena's Vow is the extraordinary story of one woman's choice and the twelve lives that would ultimately be saved – or lost - by her decision."
Tovah Feldshuh received Tony Award nominations for her work in Golda's Balcony, Yentl, Sarava and Lend Me a Tenor. Her theatre roles have also garnered the actress four Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, an Obie and a Theatre World Award. In other words, she's one heck of a performer!
Call us now at Applause Theatre Service to get tickets to this critically acclaimed hit and with a great offer to boot. Mention the "Applause Insider Deal" when you speak to a sales expert and we can get you great seats at a great price!!

Avenue Q in New York City offers Discount Tickets for March and April 2009
If you haven't had the chance to see Avenue Q at the Golden Theater in New York City, now might be a great time for you to see this Best Musical of the Year of 2004 (and 3 category Tony Award winner).Avenue Q is a puppet and people filled Broadway musical that takes place in New York City. It tells the story of Princeton, an energetic and fun-loving college graduate who comes to the big city looking to fulfill his dreams and for lots of excitement. The only problem for Princeton is that he doesn't have much money. The only neighborhood he can afford to live is called Avenue Q. Although Avenue Q is not the greatest place to be, it is a place where Princeton meets several other new friends, all kind of experiencing life's struggles together. You know, trying to find work, get a date and trying to find out what meaning their lives will have.
Avenue Q is one of the greatest original musicals of modern times. With a book written by Jeff Whitty and music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx as well as outstanding direction by Jason Moore, this show still does lots of business on Broadway. Dennis Cunningham of NY1 calls Avenue Q "hiarious, insightful entertainment-an exuberant blast of fresh air!" I couldn't agree any more myself folks.
Right now I am pleased to announce that Applause Theater Service in conjunction with the Avenue Q production is able to get you excellent seats at a discounted price for March and April 2009. The show currently has 8 performances a week with Wednesday as an off day. You can check out our Avenue Q show page by clicking here. Applause is an officially New York State licensed ticket agency for all the Broadway Shows. They have been providing the best seats, prices and expert service for 21 years now.

By the way, one of my co-workers, my friend J. says this is "in my top ten Broadway Shows to see". J. is a playwright, director, musician and an expert on everything happening on Broadway. You can call him directly when your plans include seeing a Broadway Show.
Good luck, we hope to hear from you when your plans include seeing Avenue Q or other shows on Broadway.

Could God of Carnage Win The 2009 Tony Award for Best Play?
What do you think would happen when two sets of parents get together to have a meeting about their own children not getting along? Will it go smoothly or will there be some bad behavior of their own?I am pleased to tell you that a new play is in previews right now at the Jacobs Theater in New York City. It is called God of Carnage, billed as a "comedy of manners without the manners". Written by Yasmina Reza, this show recently finished a sold-out run in London. The word of mouth in New York after a week's worth of preview performances sounds very strong indeed.
God of Carnage will officially open to New York critic's reviews on Sunday March 22, 2009. The reviews from London critic's were very positive and I have even heard someone I work with say God of Carnage might even win the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play.
God of Carnage has an amazing All-Star cast. Can you imagine James Gandalfini (The Sopranos), Jeff Daniels (Terms of Endearment, Dumb and Dumber), Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, First Wives Club) and Hope Davis (Arlington Road), all on a Broadway stage together? I am planning on seeing this show in the next week or so. Really, I can't wait. To me, there's something special when you get to witness "movie stars" performing "live" on a Broadway stage.
This new play is currently performing on a Tuesday through Sunday schedule with evening shows at 8pm and a Wednesday and Saturday afternoon performance at 2pm with Sunday matinee at 3pm. Right after opening night on Sunday March 22, 2009, Tuesday evening's will start earlier at 7pm. The earlier starting time is great for some younger theater-goers and those folks that have earlier workdays the following day. The theater has been offering earlier Tuesday evenings for several years now which does allot in helping to introduce many folks to theater that might not venture out on a weeknight.
God of Carnage tickets with special discounts through April 9, 2009 along with the promise of "top price seating" are available by calling Applause Theater Service, an officially licensed ticket agency for the show. It is unlikely that the discount will be available if the show opens to rave reviews that some anticipate. So we invite you to purchase seats now if you think this show is a good fit for you.
Should you want to consider seeing additional shows on Broadway, simply click here for Applause's up-to-date Broadway listings as of today. Applause has been selling tickets to all the shows on Broadway for over 21 years now. They can be reached in their New York City office by calling 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week.
Let them hear from you, they love talking about Broadway theater. They have lots of restaurant suggestions too, if you're looking for some expert advice on great food, service and reasonable prices.
Enjoy God of Carnage or the show of your choosing. Take care now.

Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons Return to Broadway in Impressionism
Sure I like most of the Broadway theater I get to see, I'm easy to please I guess. As I sat in my seat at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater tonight, I couldn't wait to see two of my favorite movie stars-Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons perform in Impressionism, a new Michael Jacobs play. Mr. Irons and Ms. Allen are Tony Award-winners from their last appearances on Broadway years ago in The Real Thing and The Heidi Chronicles respectively. The play takes place in Manhattan and tells the story about two middle-aged people, Thomas (played by Mr. Irons) and Katherine (played by Ms. Allen) that find love in a most unique way. Thomas has returned from Africa where as an International photojournalist has seen much death and sadness of people struggling everyday to survive. He returns to New York City and begins working in Katherine's art gallery. Over time, the pair and some neighborhood visitors to the gallery describe what "impression" they get from looking at several paintings in the gallery. Katherine and Thomas, although all play long appearing to be very different, finally realize they "fit with one another", and fall in love. Although I felt that Thomas and Katherine's characters might have developed a bit faster, during the second act we really begin to see how the two might "fancy one another".
Impressionism has a wonderful supporting cast featuring Marsha Mason (star of film and stage for over 30 years now), one of my favorite actresses, along with Hadley Delany, Michael T. Weiss, Margarita Levieva, Andre De Shields and Aaron Lazar. They all make this a true ensemble effort. Three time Tony Award-winning director Jack O'Brien directs this show.
Right now, Applause Theater Service, an officially state licensed ticketing agency for Impressionism and every Broadway Show playing, has superb seating for this play. They can obtain special discounted seats as well for most performances through April 19, 2009. Saturday evening seats are full priced. Impressionism is a strictly limited engagement and will play through July 5, 2009. Jeremy Irons appears with the permission of Actor's Equity Association.
If you think you might want to see Impressionism on Broadway, you can contact Applause Theater Service in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week. If you are interested in seeing some other Broadway Theater, click here for our current Broadway Show listing.

9 to 5 The Musical starts previews on Broadway on April 7, 2009
Do you remember the extremely popular film of the 1980's called 9 to 5? Well I am so happy to inform you that 9 to 5 The Musical will begin performances at the Marquis Theater in New York City on April 7, 2009.9 to 5 The Musical is based on the film by Patricia Resnick which tells the very funny story of a more than efficient office manager by the name of Violet Newstead, who along with her co-workers plot to get revenge on their "sexist" boss, keep him occupied for a while, as they take over their place of work for the time being. You might recall that in the movie, the ladies take control and turn the office into a part day-care center complete with "flexible" work hours. Sounds like fun right?
9 to 5 The Musical has a great score with new songs written by Dolly Parton. In addition, the role of Violet is played by Allison Janney (of television's The West Wing series), for which she won several Emmy Awards as well as three fantastic Broadway regulars-Marc Kudisch, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty. This show should be one of the more popular ones that we get to see this Broadway season.
Right now you might want to call Applause Theater Service in New York City, as they have an inside track on "discount" tickets for this show for many performances. The discount is good for shows through June 14, 2009 so take your time. No pressure. Simply be sure you would like to see 9 to 5 The Musical, then you can call Applause at their New York City office at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 to buy tickets.

Rock of Ages Tickets on Broadway are On Sale Now
I had loads of fun when I first saw Rock of Ages in an Off Broadway theater some months ago. I am happy to see that the show will move to Broadway and play the Brooks Atkinson Theater starting with performances on March 17, 2009.Rock of Ages is a "rock musical" that takes place in Hollywood in the mid 1980's. The story is cute, about a small town girl meeting a big city rock star at L.A.s most famous rock n' roll club. The two fall in love to the "hit songs of the 80's". How cute is that?
Rock of Ages features music that of many of us grew up with- Bon Jovi, Journey, Styx, Pat Benetar, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and several others. I couldn't believe how I knew most of the songs and look forward to seeing Rock of Ages again in the next week or two.
Chris D'Arienzo wrote the musical and Kristin Haggi is the director of Rock of Ages. Choreography is by Kelly Devine. Rock of Ages starring actors are Constantine Maroulis, Amy Spanger and James Carpinello with an energetic and extremely talented supporting ensemble.
If you call now, Applause Theater Service, an officially licensed ticket agency for Rock of Ages and all the other Broadway theater in New York City, has access to specially discounted seats for Rock of Ages from now through May 3, 2009. It even includes several weekend performances.
Applause's local number in New York City is 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 or you can check out their award-winning web site.
When your plans include a Broadway show, we hope you'll give us the opportunity to be of service to you, your family and friends.

Matthew Broderick returns to Broadway in The Philanthropist
Great news theater lovers, Matthew Broderick (most recently the co-star of The Producers on Broadway) will star in a very funny comedy this Spring. This exciting new show is called The Philanthropist, at New York City's American Airlines Theater. Performances begin on April 10, 2009.
The Philanthropist is written by Christopher Hampton and is written as a response to Moliere's "The Misanthrope". The action takes place at an elite British university at sometime "in the future". The Philanthropist is about a college professor named Phillip (played by Mr. Broderick), who refuses to join his colleagues that often criticize others and their actions in an excessive fashion. He ends up destroying his own credibility in the strange world of academia...as well as in the bedroom also.
The Philanthropist also features Steven Weber (of the Wings television series and most recently of The Producers on Broadway). This show is one of the Roundabout Theater Company productions and is a strictly limited engagement.
Right now, Applause Theater Service, an officially licensed theater ticket provider for all the Broadway Shows in town has access to discount tickets for The Philanthropist. If you think you would like to consider buying tickets for The Philanthropist, you may call Applause Theater Service locally in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week. They love talking about Broadway so feel free to give them a call today.
If you think you might want to see some other exciting Broadway theater, you can simply click on this link for an up-to-date listing of current Broadway productions.

Rock Musical Memphis to Arrive on Broadway in Fall 2009
Applause Theatre Service has just got the news that an exciting new musical is set to come to Broadway! I love the fact that this one is completely original. "Memphis", the new rock 'n' roll musical penned by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, will arrive on Broadway in the fall of 2009 at a theatre to be announced.Broadway has been the goal of the racially fueled musical, which has played regional engagements at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre this past season. Memphis was presented in earlier incarnations at the North Shore Music Theatre and TheatreWorks.
Director Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) will repeat their work for the Broadway production.
Based on a concept by George W. George, Memphis features book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a score and lyrics by Bon Jovi's David Bryan. DiPietro and Bryan are also represented with the Off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger, which begins performances at New World Stages later this month.
Chad Kimball (Lennon, Good Vibrations, Into the Woods, My Life With Albertine) and Montego
Glover (The Color Purple, Radiant Baby) starred in the recent engagements of the musical which, according to press notes, "follows the fictionalized life story of young, white radio disc jockey Huey Calhoon growing up in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950’s. An unlikely hero with a great love of the music he hears in the black bars on Beale Street, Huey’s on-air antics and unstoppable enthusiasm for 'race records' creates a new white audience for African-American music. His personal life transcends the race line as well, when he falls in love with a beautiful black singer - with dramatic consequences."Call Applause Theatre Service at 800-451-9930 to book tickets to all shows both on and off Broadway. Ask an Applause Sales Expert for the Insider Deal to get some extra savings!

Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen Come to Broadway in Impressionism
I can't wait till tomorrow night when I get to see a new American play called Impressionism on Broadway. Impressionism features a fantastic cast, led by Jeremy Irons (last seen on Broadway in 1984's The Real Thing) for which he won a much deserved Tony Award. In addition we will get to see the very talented Joan Allen (last seen on Broadway in 1989's The Heidi Chronicles), where she received a Tony nomination for her work. An extremely hard working and talented supporting cast will join them on stage as well. Impressionism is written by Michael Jacobs and directed by 3 time Tony Award-winning Jack O'Brien.Impressionism is a love story which tells us about a world traveling photojournalist and a New York City art gallery owner and how "art" can repair the broken lives of people.
Right now, Applause Theater Service in New York City is offering discount pricing for Impressionism for many performances through April 19, 2009. Reasons To Be Pretty Comes To Broadway
One of the shows that could become one of this season's most popular on Broadway begins performances on March 13, 2009. It's a comedy called Reasons To Be Pretty, a new play written by Neil LaBute and starring Marin Ireland and Steven Pascuale.Reasons To Be Pretty is a show about America's obsession with "physical beauty". This show tells of a young man called Greg, and his "offhand"
comment about one of his female co-workers having a pretty face (as well as his own girlfriend not having one). Naturally the comment gets back to Greg's girlfriend. Not only does it create friction between them but involves their close friends as well.
Reasons To Be Pretty certainly sounds like a fun time at the theater. Having been involved in Broadway theater ticket sales for many years, our staff almost always gets invited to preview performances of new shows. As soon as I get a chance to see Reasons To Be Pretty, I will report back to the readers of our Applause News Blog. I'm really looking forward to seeing this comedy. Who knows, maybe it will become one of the hit shows of the season. One never knows.
Right now through May 31, 2009, our company Applause Theater Service invites you to call us and consider purchasing discount tickets for Reasons To Be Pretty. Simply call us locally in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week and ask for the Insider Ticket Deal for Reasons To Be Pretty.
Most of time its great fun to get tickets for a show that most people have not heard of. I am hoping that one of them is Reasons To Be Pretty, soon to be lighting up New York City's Lyceum Theater.
Let us hear from you when your plans include seeing a Broadway Show. Take care now.

Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit Returns to Broadway
The last time I saw Blithe Spirit was at New York's Alvin Theater (currently named the Neil Simon Theater) in 1987. Written by Noel Coward and originally appearing both on Broadway and in London in 1941, Blithe Spirit is one of Mr. Coward's funniest plays. The play tells the very funny story of a successful novelist that is haunted by his biggest fan- his deceased wife. You can only imagine how difficult this would be to explain to his current wife right? In the show, Charles Condomine is gathering material to write his next novel. He decides to hire an eccentric "medium" to perform a "seance". Soon after, we get to witness Charles's deceased wife Elvira and how she "comes to life" to take revenge on him.
As I sat in the audience at the Shubert Theater tonight I was recalling how very much I enjoyed the show 22 years ago as I got to see some of my favorite stars perform. Imagine the chance to see Richard Chamberlain, Blythe Danner, Judith Ivey and Geraldine Fitzgerald? It was a very special night at the theater. In fact I believe Geraldine Fitzgerald had passed away the following weekend that we saw the show.
Tonight's version of Blithe Spirit is also a production that I will recall fondly for years to come. Directed by Michael Blakemore, this Blithe Spirit gives us Rupert Everett (playing the role of Charles), Christine Ebersole (in the role of Elvira), Jayne Atkinson (playing Ruth), Simon Jones and Deborah Rush (as Dr. and Mrs. Bradman), Susan Louise O'Connor (in the role of Edith) and Angela Lansbury (in the role of Madame Arcati). Ms. Lansbury has been performing on television, film and stage for over 50 years now.
As much as I enjoyed Blithe Spirit over 20 years ago, I would have to say that this production is every bit as entertaining as the last one. And this cast, let me tell you friends just how well they work together, never skipping a step in their performance for 2 and 1/2 hours. You'd be doing yourself a favor buying treating yourself to some tickets to see Blithe Spirit.
Right now I have uncovered a special discount for Blithe Spirit if you think you'd like to see the show. It is good for most performances through April 15, 2009. You can call the friendly ticket experts at Applause Theater Service at their New York City office at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. And if your looking for a great restaurant, just ask. The Applause folks know lots of nice places to enjoy a meal before the show.

Applause Theater Service says "YES" to Great Service on Broadway
Have you ever tried to buy theater tickets for Broadway? Have you had to call several companies before finding the right tickets for the show of your choosing? Does it seem like most of the time that the tickets you're looking for are not available? Or at least not available at a fair price?Often we call companies and get the "same old same old" answers which amount to the word "no", or "sold out" or "sorry that's not available". Well, have a look at Seth Godin's blog of March 2, 2009. It's called "looking for yes". I just read it and its simply brilliant.
Seth says he sometimes goes to the Post office in one town and often finds that the people working there find problems with his desire to simply ship a small package. When he brings the same package to another Post office, they ship it with ease. Why is this? The same goes with Broadway tickets. There are plenty of places to buy tickets but next time you try, see how easy (or difficult) it can be. Really friends, try it please.
Anyway if you think you want tickets to see a Broadway Show, you might want to give a call to Applause Theater Service in New York City. They subscribe to the Seth Godin business philosophy of giving people the information they want, back it up with great and memorable service and let consumers do what they want. In short, make people's lives easy.
At Applause, when you inquire about tickets, they give you the information that will help you make an informed decision that best fits your interests, not theirs. They let shoppers continue to shop and are willing to allow consumers to take their time when making buying decisions.
"Broadway tickets are expensive" says Rich Gladstone, Vice President and co-owner of Applause Theatre Service. "We think people should gather their information first then shop with the company that they trust will best fill their ticket requirements and service needs".
There are hundreds of places to purchase theater tickets for Broadway Shows. Try Applause, we think you'll see the difference that Seth Godin looks for in his business life. At Applause, they "look for yes" also. Thank you Seth Godin, its refreshing to hear someone like you talk about how consumers need to be treated wherever they shop.
Sincerely,
Your friends at Applause Theater Service

Shrek The Musical's Adventure on Broadway

Shrek The Musical tells the story of Shrek, a hapless "ogre" who lives in a swamp and his fairytale friends as they embark on an adventure to bring Lord Farquaad (the ruler of the town where he lives) back a princess to marry him.. This is a deal Shrek makes with Lord Farquaad so that he will be able to live out the rest of his life in peace and quiet and regain title to the home that was taken from him. On Shrek's journey, we get to meet an energetic group of fairytale character friends of Shrek's that make this musical a standout in the "musical comedy" category this season.
Brian d'Arcy James and Sutton Foster star. The supporting cast are some of the most amazingly talented actors ever to appear on a Broadway stage.
Right now, Shrek The Musical is offering some "discount" tickets for their show prior to this season's Tony Awards in June of 2009. If you are interested in seeing one of this season's top musicals, you might want to speak with the ticketing experts at Applause Theater Service, a local provider of Shrek The Musical tickets. According to Rich Gladstone, Applause's Vice President of Sales, "Shrek The Musical is one of the best shows I've ever seen. It's great fun, loaded with tremendous acting talent and has very enjoyable music too. I promise you'll love it and its great for kids, adults and the entire family".
Shrek the Musical will probably offer these discount seats for a few months so there's no need to rush out and buy them. However, like most things in life, the sooner you book
your tickets, the better seats you'll most likely get.No pressure though friends. If you want to talk, simply call Applause Theater Service in New York at their local phone line at 212-307-7050 or toll free 800-451-9930. They will get you in to see Shrek the Musical at discount prices and suggest great places to have a meal as well.
If you want to talk about Shrek the Musical let us hear from you. If you are interested in some other Broadway Theater, simply click here for a complete up-to-date listing of what's playing on Broadway right now and for probably the next several months.
Enjoy the theater.

Broadway Theater Ticket Sales are Stronger Than Ever
With all the talk of "doom and gloom" at this difficult time in our economy, its no wonder that newspaper articles and on-line news stories I read often point to questions about the health of Broadway theater. I wonder sometimes if the writers of these stories actually check their facts. For instance, right now if you were to simply click on our Broadway theater page, you will see a listing of 34 Broadway shows in production. That means these shows are playing performances or at least have tickets on sale for shows that are soon going to be previewing on Broadway.
I've been involved in ticket sales for Broadway theater for 31 years now. Although I would be the first to admit that ticket sales are never the highest for Broadway during the winter months in New York City-still I have checked the statistics from the very reliable League of Theaters and Producers to set the record straight. Broadway ticket sales are up from a year ago. Sure higher ticket prices the last few years help this increase stand out. Still how would the naysayers that write these "negative" articles about Broadway theater and New York City explain themselves?
I think some writers like to exaggerate their facts so they can claim "gloom and doom". Of course some of the older shows that have played Broadway for many years are experiencing somewhat of a decline in sales. But all in all, I have looked at the figures for Broadway and the reality is that as the warmer weather comes upon us and thoughts of Easter and Spring Break come to the minds of those planning vacations to New York City or outings that include a Broadway Show-our phone lines are becoming quite active now. Sure people are scared. Yes its a time for those who have to hold off on spending on things other than necessities to stay away from vacations or spending money on tickets.
But for those planning on making a trip to New York City, either for the day or a vacation of several days, now is a great time to check out the wonderful talent performing in dozens of Broadway Shows. If you get a chance, you can call Applause Theater Service of New York City. Applause is a long-time experienced ticket agency. They have a friendly group of ticket experts that really work with the knowledge they have along with industry contacts so that they can provide the "best seats for the best shows at the best prices". Of course you are welcome to call dozens of other companies who can assist you when your plans include Broadway theater. We often find that callers to Applause Theater Service have called 3-5 different companies before calling us. So why do they call around so much? It all comes down to "trust".
Consumers do what they do best. The shop, compare then consume and now more than ever they know that ticket prices have been increasing over the years. So have New York hotel room prices. For some hotels, it seems like they've been practicing "highway robbery". They now have to straighten their "act" out don't they. For hoteliers that have been used to charging "high prices" the last 5 years or so, I think the "party is over" for them. My suggestion is for them to re-think the way they have done business in the past.
For good companies that have always been pricing "fairly", I believe business will not only continue to get better and do well over time but when the economy gets better these companies are going to make a real name for themselves. The public is tired of "scalper prices". And high prices don't only go for tickets. High prices exist in all industries. The key is to try to find out who can you "trust". How do you know from looking at a web site if you can "trust" someone. You don't really. So why not make a phone call and talk to a live person about hotel rooms or Broadway theater. How about calling a restaurant and talking to someone about their establishment. If they rush you off the phone, would that be a negative sign?
My friends, we can all learn allot by making a simple phone call. If companies want your business, they need to go back to the way business used to get done. Slowly and steadily my friends. Call the hotel and talk to someone. Call a ticket seller and talk to someone. Call a restaurant and talk to someone. If they're too busy to talk, hang up and call someone that is willing to work for your business, someone willing to earn your trust.
I've been in the Broadway ticket business for 31 years. Still I cannot believe that most companies design themselves to make an "electronic sale". They often hide their phone number hoping the public will simply click on something they want to sell to you, hoping you'll enter your credit card number electronically and make a purchase. Dumb, dumb, dumb in my opinion. Businesses have very little way to differentiate themselves from competition today. Not Applause Theater Service, Not us my friends.
Business is not as bad as some would have you believe, Still for some shows that "need a push", there are discount tickets for sale. For the big "sell-out shows", well maybe there aren't discount tickets but there's no need to pay "scalper prices". Like I said earlier, check around. Shop-compare-ask for service. You deserve it. After all, your looking to make a purchase, why not expect great service.
If you are coming to Broadway and need tickets, we hope you'll consider talking with us. With
this in mind I have taken the liberty of making a list of the current line-up of Broadway Shows for you They are listed below for your convenience. They are:
