A Veteran Broadway Ticket Service Helps Keep Broadway Ticket Prices Down in 2010
I consider myself one of the people that knows allot about what goes on in the world of Broadway Theater in New York City. I've been on the ticket selling end of the Broadway Theater industry for nearly 33 years and am deeply concerned about the state of the Broadway Theater. For instance, did you know that 10 Broadway Shows are closing in the next week or so? Even though early back in my career many shows that didn't do substantial enough box office business, indeed did often close in January when tourists left New York City. But to my recollection, I don't think there were many years when we had 10 Broadway Shows close up shop.
When you think about 2009, we have incurred a deep economic recession like we've never seen before. This recession, coupled with very high ticket prices is leading to the demise of perfectly wonderful Broadway musicals and plays. The producers of Broadway Shows need to learn how to bring a show to New York at more reasonable prices, otherwise I think Broadway Theater will get hurt even more so.
For those folks that want to see a Broadway Show, I've got a perfect solution to avoid paying high ticket prices. Consider shopping with a local New York Broadway ticket expert like Applause Theater Service. Applause Theater Service is managing to keep Broadway ticket prices down for all of its customers by offering their BFV Broadway Ticket Deals Promotion they've developed over the years.
Its simple really. Applause understands the market every Broadway Show is trying to attract. They also know the supply and demand for a show throughout the year. When Broadway Shows don't sell out of their ticket inventory, they offer special incentives to Applause to put people in their seats.
That brings me to Applause's BFV Broadway Ticket Deals Promotion. Checkout the BFV page now if you have a chance. I challenge any licensed ticket agency for Broadway Theater to offer better seats, prices and the excellent service that my company can.
This is not a sales pitch, just the facts. We hope to hear from you when your plans include a visit to the Broadway Theater. After all, we love the Broadway Theater and want to keep prices down in 2010 so everyone can afford to attend quality live New York Theater.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Applause Theater Service Offers Late Night Ticket Service In New York City
The friendly local Broadway ticket experts at Applause Theater Service in New York City are pleased to report that company hours will continue to be extended on a permanent basis after a successful trial during the month of December 2009. Although Applause Theater Service has always been open 7 days a week for over 22 years now, we felt we were possibly missing out on serving the needs of people from the west coast that may need our advice on how to secure great Broadway Show tickets.Applause is a licensed New York State ticket agency (License #71AP1001029) that specializes in helping theatergoers obtain the best seats for the best Broadway Shows at the very best prices. They are known for their excellent customer service and for the time they take in helping customers choose the optimum seating arrangements for the show they select.
While most of the major ticket companies in the country are cutting their hours of operation during these difficult economic times, Applause is pleased to be able to "stay open late" (until midnight now). Being a co-owner of Applause and a 32 year veteran in Broadway Show ticket sales now, staying open later is a natural progression for Applause now. We find that we can make a few more ticket sales every day but more importantly, we are there when the public is looking for us and wants to talk about Broadway Shows.
In my opinion most people don't usually buy on the first call anyway so staying open later sometimes allows for a first discussion of a shoppers needs. Then we offer some seating suggestions, prices and maybe a restaurant suggestion or two and then we often hear back from the caller a day or two later. So you can see that staying open later is simply Applause's way of offering extra service for those folks that may need some extra time making up their mind.
After 8pm on most nights you will often get an owner of Applause himself answering your questions and providing ticket options for you. That's me Rich Gladstone, (scroll down after the FAQ section, I'm the guy on the left). Also known as The Broadway Ticket Man.
Call us anytime day or night in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. Seven days a week.
We'd love to hear from you and help you with your Broadway Show ticket needs.

Hair To Perform Live On New Year's Eve In Time Square
One of my favorite shows on Broadway is about to get it's biggest exposure to date. I am of course talking about Hair. This year's Tony Award winner for Best Musical. Finally the rest of the world will get the chance to experience what New Yorkers already know. Hair is awesome. The show which has been playing to packed houses since March 2009 is one of the most thrilling and emotional shows ever written. Prior to seeing this production I didn't really know a lot about the show except that is took place in the 60's. Sure I knew a few of the songs but that was about it. From the first song I was hooked. What a great night in the theatre. I highly recommend you check it out next time you're town. You will love it.JWB

All Star Cast in Time Stands Still on Broadway
Get ready theater lovers. A new play written by Donald Margulies with direction by Daniel Sullivan will start previews on January 5, 2010 (the official opening is set for January 28, 2010). The show is called the Time Stands Still and it tells the story about a couple that has been together for several years that share a love for depicting the realities of war for all of us to understand. The couple is James and Sarah played by Laura Linney and Brian d'Arcy James. Ms. Linney has been in lots of film and on Broadway many times. Mr. James most recently starred in Shrek The Musical at New York's Broadway Theater. Apparently James and Sarah sustain injuries while at war, return home to New York City and look forward to a more mainstream life together.Time Stands Still only has a cast of four people. In addition to Ms. Linney and Mr. James are Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio, Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll) and Alicia Silverstone, one of my favorite big screen actresses. She was in Time Stands Still when it premiered at the David Geffen Playhouse earlier this year.
Time Stands Still is a Manhattan Theater Club production and could very well be one of 2010's important new plays. Because Time Stands Still is relatively unknown at this date in time, they are looking for an audience to fill up the Samuel J. Friedman Theater. With this in mind, our company, Applause Ticket Service is authorized to help you obtain tickets for Time Stands Still at greatly reduced prices. For instance we can secure excellent orchestra and front mezzanine seats for the public at prices below face value. For those on a tighter budget, we can arrange for lower priced tickets as well.
You may want to know exactly how Applause can do this. The answer's simple really. Since the advance sale for Time Stands Still is slow right now, the show offers Applause Ticket Service discount tickets of admission. We then pay less than the usual cost, add on a small service charge and pass on the savings to the general public. And you get to buy tickets for Time Stands Still at below cost.
What could be better than this except for maybe backstage passes to mingle with the cast after the show. Sorry but we can only do so much...
If you need great advice on obtaining tickets for Time Stands Still or any of the other exciting Broadway Shows, we hope you'll call upon Applause Ticket Service in New York City. We like to think of ourselves as local ticket experts you can trust to help you with your theater ticket selections.
Cheers,

The Miracle Worker Plays Broadway's Circle In The Square Theater in February 2010
I am really looking forward to seeing the revival of The Miracle Worker when it plays preview performances at New York's Circle In The Square Theater on February 12,2010 prior to an official opening on March 3, 2010. The Miracle Worker originally won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1960. The show starred Anne Bancroft who took home the Best Actress Tony Award and newcomer Patty Duke, who won the Theatre World Award and was introduced to the theater and film world at that time. Both actresses went on to win Academy Awards for the roles they created when the play was turned into a big screen film. The Miracle Worker takes place in 1880's Alabama and is the true story about Helen Keller (Abigail Breslin),who was born blind and deaf and Annie Sullivan(Alison Pill),the inspirational teacher who taught Helen how to communicate with the world. The Miracle Worker has an excellent cast including Matthew Modine (star of 50 films and getting ready for his first show on Broadway). He plays Helen's father and plays opposite Jennifer Morrisey, Helen's mother (from TV's House). Ms. Morrissey is also preparing for her Broadway debut in The Miracle Worker. The role of Aunt Ev will be played by Elizabeth Franz. Ms. Franz won a Tony Award for playing opposite Brian Dennehy in Death of a Salesman many years ago. She also has many Broadway and Off Broadway credits to her resume and was nominated for Tony Awards for her roles in Brighton Beach Memoirs and Morning's At Seven.
Right now if you think you might want to obtain tickets for The Miracle Worker with this exciting cast, consider a call to Applause Ticket Service in New York City. Applause Ticket Service is a licensed ticket agent for The Miracle Worker and all the Broadway Shows. Applause can get you into this show for below face value. What this means is that Applause gets to buy the tickets at a special price. They then add on a reasonable service charge for their efforts and service and sell you the tickets at below cost.
Could there be any better way to obtain tickets for The Miracle Worker? Maybe a part in the show perhaps?
Applause Ticket Service can be reached at 212-307-7050 in New York City's theater district or toll free at 800-451-9930. You can call seven days a week, They love talking about Broadway Theater. If you do also, give them a call. You'll be glad you did.

Finian's Rainbow To Close
Earlier this week it was announced that Ragtime was closing and now comes news that Finian's Rainbow will play it's final performance on January 17. This marks the third revival along with Bye Bye Birdie to close after a short run. When you consider the fact that Finian's got rave reviews across the board it is a little disheartening to say the least. When it closes it will leave A Little Night Music as the lone revival from this season still playing. However there is good news ahead. A new revival of Promises,Promises starring Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth is scheduled to open this Spring at the Broadway Theatre. As much as I am looking forward to seeing it I worry it may get swallowed up in a house as big as the Broadway. We will soon find out. Until next time theatre fans.JWB

Ragtime The Musical Extends for One More Week
I just heard that the revival of Ragtime The Musical, which had recently announced it was going to close on January 3, 2010, is instead going to play one additional week at New York's Neil Simon Theater. The Producing Office handles the marketing for Ragtime, In The Heights, Irving Berlin's White Christmas and West Side Story.Ragtime The Musical will play its final performances as follows:
Sat January 2, 2010 at 2 and 8pm
Sun January 3, 2010 at 3pm
Tues January 5, 2010 at 7pm
Wed January 6, 2010 at 2pm and 8pm
Thursday January 7 2010 at 8pm
Friday January 8, 2010 at 8pm
Sat January 9, 2010 at 2pm and 8pm
Sun January 10, 2010 at 3pm
If you think you'd like to see Ragtime before it leaves New York City, we'd love to hear from you. I loved the show and think you should as well.

Key Brand Entertainment buys Broadway.com for $45 million dollars
Hot off the press. I just wanted to inform all of you Broadway Ticket News readers that Broadway.com,one of the big names in Broadway Show ticket sales in New York City, has been sold by their parent company Hollywood Media Corporation. The lucky buyer is Key Brand Entertainment of New York City.Although I am not personally overly familiar with Key Brand Entertainment, I understand that they are a very large firm with interests all over the world. In particular, Key Brand Entertainment is a producer and distributor of live theatrical events in North America which include Broadway Across America productions that tour the entire United States and Canada. In addition Key Brand Entertainment owns several theaters in the U.S. and is a producer of Broadway Shows and London theater as well.
My understanding of the sale of Broadway.com to Key Brand Entertainment is that the company was purchased for $45 million dollars of which $20 million dollars will be paid in cash, $8.5 million dollars in additional payments over 5 years plus 12 % interest with the balance paid assuming Broadway.com meets certain requirements during this time period. Those requirements are usually aligned with future growth in ticket sales and profitability.
From my point of view this transaction makes perfectly good sense for Hollywood Media Corporation. Their stock over the past few years has done nothing but continue on a downward trend and if they need cash to continue to operate their core business, I can't think of anything better than someone giving them $20 million dollars in cash to shore up their books. I'm sure their stockholders will welcome the buyout as well.
I've been in the business of selling Broadway Show tickets myself for 32 years now and have followed Broadway.com's success for a long time. They have an amazing brand name and sell lots of tickets. Although I'm not sure about their service, my guess is that they probably do a pretty good job serving the public.
At Applause Ticket Agency (my company), we provide a very personal type of service to locals and out-of-towners alike that need good Broadway Show tickets at reasonable prices. Although we are a smaller competitor when compared to Broadway.com, we most likely both share in the excitement of all the wonderful live entertainment events taking place on New York City stages as well as providing an important service to the theater-going public.
I also hear that Jerome Kane, Broadway.com's Vice President of ticketing will continue in his role with the company as will Matt Kupchin, their President and COO . I know Mr. Kane personally and am sure that his experience in the business will help guide Broadway.com in the days ahead.
Good luck to our friendly competitors at Broadway.com.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone/Vice President

Customer Story
I know. I know. It's been almost three weeks since my last customer story. I'm sure you're all going thru withdrawls. Not! The truth is I needed a vacation. Well now I'm back and looking forward to 2010. Today's customer story is about a semi-regular customer of mine who actually lives in the city and calls us when he needs tickets for the hottest shows or concerts in town. Yesterday he called me looking for tickets to see Mariah Carey at Madison Square Garden for New Year's Eve. An event that's been sold out at the venue for a couple of months. He called us because he knew that not only would we get him the best seats but at a price much lower then anywhere else. When you call Applause you never hear the words "Sold Out". Within a matter of minutes I was able to find him a pair of great seats on the main floor and at a price that was within his budget. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?JWB

Broadway Comes Back
Now before you think I've lost my mind I know that Broadway didn't go anywhere. As is the case every year at this time most Broadway shows post their higher grosses than any other time during the year. Makes sense right? It was Christmas after all. Last week a record ten Broadway shows grossed over a million dollars with Wicked grossing over two million by itself. Pretty impressive don't you think? This week promises to be just as profitable if not better. Who says the economy is bad? Now while seven shows are set to close in the next few weeeks there is hope as there are seventeen new shows set to open in the next few months. Now that is something to be excited about.Support live theatre. There's nothing like it.JWB

Ragtime To Close This Sunday
It was just announced that the 2009 revival of Ragtime will play it's final performance on January 3, 2010. When it closes it will have played 28 previews and 57 regular performances. This new revival is based on the critically acclaimed production that opened to rave reviews earlier this year at the Kennedy Center. Expectations were high but mixed reviews and poor ticket sales sealed it's doom after a disappointing seven week run. I myself did not see the show after having been underwhelmed by the 1998 production. Having said that I had hoped it would have a longer run as it is a great show for all ages and it was a nice alternative to shows like Wicked and The Lion King. Will we ever see it again? Probably not. Let's just hope it doesn't discourage other producers in the future from taking chances on shows like Ragtime.Until next time theatre fans.JWB

Innovative theater : Fuerzabruta
Google ‘Fuerzabruta’ and you’ll start reading some of the same words and phrases: exhilarating, innovative, and energetic. That said, this theater experience departs from the tradition of sitting back and watching a story unfold, aided by music. Instead, Fuerzabruta challenges the audience to get up, dance, and create the story with their own interpretations of the wordless production.
But before I start, I have to mention the noticeable amount of negative reviews by some theater critics. So, if you are utterly offended by loud techno music and strobe lights, prefer sitting to dancing, and have expensive loafers and/or a stiff neck, read no further – you will be on your feet, dancing to techno music, looking up, wearing very wet and very ruined loafers.
So that leaves the open-minded. And that is exactly what you will need to enjoy Fuerzabruta. Going in, you should not expect a well-developed plot nor music with clever lyrics. As one of the show’s brochures puts it, “Fuerzabruta doesn’t have a purpose. It is.”
Diqui James, the show’s creator, has an obsession with minimizing static in productions. The stage literally encompasses the audience, both overhead and on all sides, and provides the audience with changing perspectives of the action. The story explores changing human emotions, using music and light to elicit feelings from audience members. Physical movement adds to that equation, as audience members are shuffled around to accommodate the changing set and the actors who move through the crowd. This interactive approach may not appeal to everyone, but to those willing to step outside of their comfort zone and into James’s production, it promises a fantastic experience.
If you're willing to experience a new kind of theater, give us a call or visit our Fuerzabruta page.
Jason DaCruz blogs for Applause Theater & Entertainment Services. For more information about Fuerzabruta or any other off-Broadway show, call Applause or visit their homepage.

Talk Live With Applause
Now I'll be the first to admit that I don't text or do anything else on my phone except talk to people. I know I may be the exception but that's just who I am. Last year my boss unveiled a new service called Boldchat. When he first mentioned it to us I wasn't really sure what to expect. Unlike most people I prefer to talk to people on the phone. It's always worked in the past so why change now right? Well was I wrong. Not only do I now enjoy talking live but it has made my job a lot easier. I can be talking to one customer on the phone and chat with another at the same time. Plus it allows the customers online to ask any question they want without having to pick up a phone. With this new system you can get the info you want and we can take your ticket request and complete it all in the same chat. Sounds good to me. Why don't you give it a try? I wouldn't be living here or working for Applause if I didn't. It's just nice to go to the theatre and see something a little off the beaten path. Currently there are over sixty shows playing Off-Broadway. Even better Applause sells tickets to all of these shows. So what are you waiting for? Now is the best time to see an Off-Broadway show. Stuck With Tickets? Call Applause
So here we are at the end of 2009 and New York has already been hit by the biggest snowstorm of the year. Not only that but we are expected to get more even more snow as the winter progresses. A View From The Bridge To Begin Previews December 28
I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about seeing this show. Even though I am familiar with most of Arthur Miller's plays I had never heard of A View From The Bridge until I saw the 1998 Broadway revival with Anthony LaPaglia, Allison Janney, and the late Brittany Murphy. I was blown away by the production and was sad that a show of that depth and raw emotion only ran for a very short time. Now here we are almost twelve years later and this magnificent play is back on Broadway again. Headlining this production are Tony winner Liev Schreiber and film star Scarlett Johansson who is making her Broadway debut. Having seen Mr. Schreiber on stage many times I can attest to his talent and stage presence. I can't wait to see what he brings to this iconic stage role. I expect this show to sell very well and based on the talent involved it should hopefully be well received. By the way the show is only running thru April 4th so don't delay. Get your tickets to see A View From The Bridge on Broadway. It is a Broadway treasure.JWB

Now Is The Best Time To See God Of Carnage-The 2009 Tony Award Winner For Best Play
Being in the business that we are in we are often invited to see the new shows prior to opening. That way when you call we can give you are honest opinion about the show. Unfortunately I was not able to see God of Carnage because quite frankly it wasn't available. It was that popular. My how times have changed. Within in a matter of weeks the show has gone from a virtual sell out to grossing between 60%-70% each week. Now while the cast may have changed the play remains the same. According to my sources the show is just as good as it was before. Right now the show is on sell thru February 28. Not only that but it is available at some incredible savings. Who doesn't like to save money? I know I do. Like I said before now is the best time to see this Tony winning comedy. Check it out for yourself. Who knows? You might even enjoy it. Until next time theatre fans.JWB

Wicked Still Breaking Box Office Records
Now in it's sixth celebrated year on Broadway is Wicked. In all my years in this business I have never seen a show that continues to sell out every performance like Wicked does. When you consider that fact that it also plays in the biggest theater on Broadway then it is even more amazing. I'll admit that while I did enjoy the show I never expected it would be the big hit that it is today. Don't forget that the show also didn't get very good reviews when it opened either. I guess the critics don't know everything. Now while Wicked may be Broadway's selling show that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. In fact at Applause we can get you tickets for any performance of your choice. Want tickets for a Saturday night? No problem. How about thirty tickets for your school trip next Summer. Just give us a call and leave the rest up to us. It's that easy. By the way we also sell tickets for Wicked in London and Nationwide. Why not give us a try? You'll be glad you did.

The Miracle Worker Plays Broadway's Circle In The Square Theater in February 2010
I am really looking forward to seeing the revival of The Miracle Worker when it plays preview performances at New York's Circle In The Square Theater on February 12, 2010 prior to an official opening on March 3, 2010. The Miracle Worker takes place in 1880's Alabama and is the true story about Helen Keller, who was born blind and deaf and Annie Sullivan, the inspirational teacher who taught Helen how to communicate with the world.

AllStar Cast to Star in Time Stands Still on Broadway
Get ready theater lovers. A new play written by Donald Margulies with direction by Daniel Sullivan will start previews on January 5, 2010 (the official opening is set for January 28, 2010). The show is called the Time Stands Still Play and it tells the story about a couple that has been together for several years that share a love for depicting the realities of war for all of us to understand.
Because Time Stands Still is relatively unkown at this date in time, they are looking for an audience to fill up the Samuel J.
Cheers,

Superior Doughnuts Closes on Broadway January 3, 2010
I really enjoyed seeing the comedy/drama Superior Doughnuts on Broadway several months ago and am sorry to see the show closing at New York's Music Box Theater on January 3, 2010. Superior Doughnuts is Tracy Letts latest play where the action takes place in Chicago. Superior Doughnuts tells the interesting story about Arthur Przybyszewski, a local doughnut shop owner and his unique friendship with Franco Wicks, an African-American employee of his. The two form a very unlikely friendship as the young man tries hard to get Arthur to make changes in his place of business.Although Superior Doughnuts has lots of funny lines in the show, there is a great deal of drama that goes on as well. Arthur is played by one of my favorite actors, Michael McKean from Laverne and Shirley, as well as many films and Broadway Shows as well. Franco Wicks is played by Jon Michael Hill, a relative newcomer to the stage. The supporting cast is made up of an extremely talented group of very good actors and they do a great job in portraying the different relationships in Arthur and Franco's lives. Superior Doughnuts is written by Tracy Letts who also wrote August:Osage County a few years ago. Direction is by Tina Landau who does a great job keeping the audience abreast of everything that's going on in the play.
Superior Doughnuts has been playing since September 16, 2009 and will officially close on January 3, 2010. So for another week the friendly ticket experts at Applause Ticket Service can get you into the show. And at discount prices as well. If you think Superior Doughnuts is a show you might want to see, consider calling Applause today at 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 1-800-451-9930 seven days a week.
If you think you may want to see other Broadway Shows, we are here to help you. We love talking about Broadway Theater. More importantly, we love people who love Broadway Theater as well.

Call a Tour Operator Expert to Book New York Hotel Packages
For anyone who is looking to plan a vacation in New York City in 2010, I would like to offer you a suggestion about how to go about doing so. The first thing you should do is consider choosing one of the city package experts that have been selling and marketing New York City vacation packages for a long time.In all my years selling Broadway Theater tickets for Applause Ticket Service (License #71AP1001029), the two most knowledgeable, reliable and friendly tour operator companies that I know of are City Escape Holidays and New York City Vacation Packages. They have been providing hotel theater package services for New York visitors for many years and have the most experience in knowing what travelers to New York City need. These companies know the best hotels for the best value, they also provide excellent theater tickets for all the Broadway Shows and can help advise you on exactly which options to choose if you're considering any sightseeing excursions or need help with dining arrangements.
City Escape Holidays is based in Marina Del Rey, California and offers terrific New York City land packages including Broadway Shows. They also are the leader of the pack when it comes to offering hotel package services in more than 20 cities throughout the United States and Canada. In addition these folks offer "special event" packages like Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, Daytona 500, Mardi Gras, Indianapolis 500 and many others.
One of the very special qualities about City Escape Holidays is their packages are sold exclusively through travel agents. This says an awful lot when you consider that the airlines used to do the same years ago only to eliminate commissions for the very travel agents who were responsible for supporting them. City Escape Holidays can be reached at 800-222-0022 for reservations and information. Just mention that Applause sent you if you remember. They love talking about New York City and can be quite helpful.
I'm also a big fan of NYCVP, a company called New York City Vacation Packages. NYCVP is an excellent small company based in Kingston, Pa. These folks run a great tour operation for nearly 15 years now. The special quality about NYCVP is that they only "package" New York City. They sell through travel agents and direct to the public as well. Being close to New York City, the staff at NYCVP comes to New York City quite frequently so that they can stay in touch with the hotels they offer as well as the many Broadway Shows, dining and sightseeing attractions they provide to their customers. For those planning a New York City vacation, you might want to get a quote on an itinerary you are planning. Checkout the NYCtrip QUOTE tool. Lots of folks use it every day. Feel free to mention that Applause sent you to them if you like.
Everyone knows that there are several large "on line" companies that sell packages to New York City and every major city throughout the country. The names Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotels.com and even some of the local ticket companies in New York City sell city packages too. The problem I see with these companies is simple really. It looks like they sell packages but aren't really interested in spending much time to talk with prospective customers. In fact when you look at their web sites, it looks like they want to sell you something electronically and not really devote time to speak with you at length about New York City vacations.
So for my money there are really only 2 great options for you to choose when planning a New York City vacation. You will feel comfortable calling upon City Escape Holidays and New York City Vacation Packages to help you choose a terrific New York City vacation.
Have a great trip to New York City.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Customers are Friends too...
One of the great things about talking to the public everyday is the opportunity to build business friendships that last. In over 18 years of selling theatre tickets, I can proudly say I have developed amazing friendships with customers all over the world. From Consumers to Concierges to Travel Agents and I always look forward to hearing from these friends...whether it is just to offer advise, or to book show tickets.Just recently I met Dr. Adams, who teaches at a small Southern College and loves to bring students in to NYC to see Broadway shows and visit the city. We have developed a wonderful friendship built on trust and respect. I help advise her on what to do, where to go, what to see, where to eat and timing...very important in the city. Understanding that they are all on a very tight (college student) budget, we work together to find the best priced tickets to accomodate their needs. Dr. Adams was just here a few weeks ago and of course came up to our office to get her tickets and visit. She took her small group to see DREAMGIRLS at the Apollo Theatre, and MARY POPPINS which was a thrill for her group. They loved the shows and had an amazing time. It is always a real delight to meet these friends in person. When Dr. Adams came by we talked about how to get everyone to the show, what time to leave and how to get back to the hotel. I even helped my friend to get her cell phone recharged. She has now brought 2 groups of students in in the last year and she would joyfully tell you that I made her and a lot of college kids very happy this year.

Applause Ticket Service in New York City
Making Broadway Theater More Affordable for EveryoneI hate to sound like I'm bragging but when a business finds something remarkable to talk about, we feel like this might just be the perfect time to tell lots of people about what we do. Our company, Applause Ticket Service is one of about a thousand different ticket agencies that help the public obtain tickets for Broadway Shows, Concerts, Sporting Events and Family Attractions throughout the country. Although most of these companies all appear to be similar when you click on their web sites, Applause Ticket Service is clearly a cut above the rest.
Yes I know, I am writing about my own company but let me give you an example of why we consider ourselves at the top of our industry. Just yesterday a potential customer by the name of Dan from Princeton, New Jersey called and said he wanted to purchase 3 tickets for Chicago The Musical in New York City. He didn't want to spend more than $50.00 for a great seat in the theater. People in this economy ask these kinds of questions all the time. Not attending the theater often, most folks don't really understand that theater tickets for all the Broadway Shows are expensive. When Dan inferred he thought he could get the seats elsewhere at the low price he wanted, I simply suggested he do so. I also said that if he needed help to call me and I would get him a great deal with excellent seats.
So Dan ended up calling me back and asking me for Applause's BFV Ticket Deal for Chicago The Musical. We secured Dan seats in row C, right off the center isle for Sunday January 17, 2010 (230pm matinee) and sold them to him for $95.00. Now $95.00 is considerably more than the $50.00 he wanted to spend but when Dan realized we gave him amazing seats along with Applause's stellar service, he was extremely happy with his purchase. I almost forgot to mention that these great seats and excellent price are below the regular printed box office price printed on the tickets for the show.
The question you may be asking is how we secured such fantastic seats for Dan and this very low price. The answer is simple. We combine the Applause brand of friendly customer service along with our ability to obtain discount tickets for Chicago The Musical. We then add a reasonable service charge and then offer seats to the public at prices below what the public could get themselves.
Years ago we always thought Applause's service was special in an industry that seemed to treat all customers the same way. Applause's ability to shop around for the best industry insider prices for many Broadway Shows has helped us secure our future role in the Broadway Industry. Anyone can sell you tickets but Applause Ticket Service can help you buy tickets, and at the best prices in the country of any licensed ticket company.
Feel free to shop around and checkout the hundreds and hundreds of others selling Broadway Theater tickets today. I challenge any one of them to be able to offer what Applause Ticket Service does on each and every phone call to our company. Then consider allowing Applause to assist you with your tickets for Broadway.
Don't forget to ask the Applause staff for restaurant suggestions. They know all the Broadway Theater District restaurants very well and can be instrumental at helping you plan a great meal before the show you plan on seeing. It seems to me that most folks have a nice meal before their show, right?
Good luck in shopping for your Broadway Theater tickets. We hope you find this information helpful today and look forward to hearing from you somewhere down the road.
Thanks for reading this article on Applause Ticket Service in New York City. Have a Happy Holiday season.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Promises Promises Revival Plays The Broadway Theater in New York City In March 2010
Allot of folks are talking about a new musical soon to open on Broadway called The Addams Family. The popular opinion says that The Addams Family should be a contender for the 2010 Best Musical Tony Award. Only time will tell of course.Equally interesting to note is that a first time revival of Promises Promises will begin playing at New York's Broadway Theater beginning preview performances on March 30, 2010 with the official opening on April 25, 2010. Promises Promises is based on a Billy Wilder film of 1960 called The Apartment. Promises Promises originally played on Broadway in 1968 and ran for a little over 3 years. The action takes place in the 1960's.
This production of Promises Promises feels like it just may very well have all the ingredients of becoming the 2010 Best Musical Revival of the year. It's simple really. The book for the show was written by Neil Simon, one of the best playwrights ever. The music by Burt Bacharach and lyrics by Hal David are memorable for sure with one of the biggest musical numbers ever written for Dionne Warwick called "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". Rob Ashford will handle the choreography (Cry-Baby, Curtains, The Wedding Singer, Thoroughly Modern Millie).
Promises Promises is a musical comedy featuring Kristen Chenoworth (Wicked, The West Wing as well as Tony and Grammy Award Winners) and Sean Hayes (Will and Grace's Emmy Award Winner). He plays a young man working at a life insurance company trying to climb the corporate ladder. She plays a waitress looking for love. It seems that this young man agrees to lend his apartment to executives at his firm for extra-marital romantic liaisons. Even though things are going well with these arrangements for a while, problems begin when the girl he has fallen for becomes one of his bosses mistresses.
Often times it appears that Broadway Shows anticipate their individual show will become a hit. Although we never know for sure how popular a show will be until the box office starts taking money in every day, in my opinion it looks like the producers of this Promises Promises is trying very hard to insure their investment will yield great returns. I for one love everything about the cast and creative team assembled for Promises Promises. And I do indeed wish them every success.
Break a leg!
Sincerely

Jersey Boys Tickets for January-February 2010
Most folks know that Jersey Boys on Broadway, the Tony Award Best Musical in 2006 is a difficult ticket to obtain without having to go to the higher priced "secondary market" of ticket sources throughout the country. Although this is usually the case for most performances as Jersey Boys on Broadway grosses over $1.2 million dollars every week in New York alone, I would like to share my inside secret with you on how to purchase lower priced seats for this show.As the year is ending and the entire Christmas Week of Jersey Boys on Broadway performances are only available through the market of ticket agents that have bought them long in advance, the public is forced to pay "market prices". Still, if you simply can wait to see Jersey Boys on Broadway in January or February of 2010, I know exactly how to get awesome seats at amazing prices. It's simple really, just consider contacting a locally licensed ticket service like Applause (License #71AP1001029). Applause Ticket Service is a local ticket company that can help you obtain seats at the best prices in the country. And here's a little secret. If you don't mind sitting a little higher up in the mezzanine of the theater, Applause can get you into this great show for under $100.00. Why pay upwards of almost $200.00 a ticket from high priced ticket services when you don't have to?
How do we do it you may ask? We just shop for every possible date on your behalf. Then we match the best seats with the best prices. You can call seven days a week locally at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. You can tell them The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. That's me, Rich Gladstone. I started Applause 22 years ago and if I can't get you pretty much the type of seat you covet, then I am not sure who possibly could.
For anyone who may need to know some helpful information about Jersey Boys on Broadway, let me share some pertinent facts with you. The show opened on Broadway in November of 2005 and won several Tony Awards including Best Musical for 2006. It tells the very interesting story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons musical band. The 4 band members actually each tell their some of the story all throughout this great show, which has excellent direction by Des McAnuff. The music is by Bob Gaudio who was the Four Seasons musical writer for most of their songs. The lyrics are by their record producer Bob Crewe. Jersey Boys on Broadway has a fantastic book written by Marshall Brickman and Rich Elice. The running time is 2 and 1/2 hours long and the show plays every day but Mondays most weeks.
The show features the great music of the time like "Sherry", "Walk Like A Man", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" and about 20 others. It's truly great music and an excellent piece of theater.
I am looking forward to seeing Jersey Boys on Broadway again in the near future. If you're like me, and you love music, then you will enjoy this show.
Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
Cheers,
Rich Gladstone

Broadway's Most Popular Show Wicked Is Still Defying Gravity
For several years now Wicked is playing to mostly sell-out audiences 8 times a week. I have personally seen Wicked 3 times with different lead actors in the cast and each performance was brilliant. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Wicked simply has all the right elements for Broadway success.Wicked is often referred to as the "untold story of the Wizard of Oz". You might say it is like a "prequel" to the Wizard of Oz story we've seen on television many times. Everyone knows that in the film version there is Glinda The Good-Witch and also the Wicked Witch of the West. Well in this stage version of Wicked The Musical, we get acquainted with Elphaba from her unusual birth where she was born "green" in body color till she goes to college and we meet her roommate Glinda. Their story isn't really what you'd expect. On stage we see how very close the girls can become yet understand the big differences that keep them apart as well.
Wicked The Musical delivers gorgeous sets which are very pretty to look at and has amazing music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the music for Pocahontas and Godspell years ago. There are a few really terrific spine tingling musical numbers that you'll remember for a long time to come. Wicked has a book that was written by Winnie Holzman with great direction by Broadway's Joe Mantello.
If you think you need some advice on possibly obtaining tickets to see Wicked in New York or even in London, maybe we can be of service to you. Our company Applause Ticket Service is a licensed New York State ticket agency for Wicked and every show playing on Broadway. We help the public access reasonably prices tickets to Wicked. And if you want to know a little secret, we often can get you into see Wicked when the show is totally sold out.
Oh come on now, you don't expect us to reveal exactly how we can get you in do you? Anyway if we can assist you with Wicked or any of the terrific live Broadway Shows, we'd love to hear from you.
Cheers,
Rich Gladstone

Billy Elliot on Broadway
One word could easily describe the Broadway hit Billy Elliot. Awesome! Although I am a big fan of the show Billy Elliot, I often have to describe the show to callers to my ticket service Applause. It seems that although the show is based on the 2000 film of the same name, there are lots of people that haven't yet seen the film.Billy Elliot on Broadway follows the film very closely and is about a teenager who develops a love for the dance. He comes from a coal mining family tradition from outside of London. It seems the miners are on strike and the town is in a declining state. You can imagine that in the 1980's London, during the Margaret Thatcher leadership era, that young Billy's family might not be too happy with his choice to try and gain admission to London's Royal Ballet School. After all, what would everyone think? His dance teacher does an amazing job training him and then getting him an audition at the school.
Billy Elliot on Broadway has an interesting story with excellent music by Elton John and lyrics and book by Lee Hall. Direction is brilliantly portrayed by Stephen Daldry who handled the same duties in the film version. Choreography is by the very talented Peter Darling. Although the musical is considered to be one of a somewhat "darker" nature, Billy Elliot has lots of funny lines in it along with fantastic dance scenes and beautiful music. You'll want to buy yourself the CD right after seeing the show. It takes 4 young actors to alternate the role of playing Billy Elliot. And they are one talented bunch indeed. Lookout for Billy's friend Michael who often steals the show with his extremely colorful wit and character.
Broadway and film veteran Gregory Jbara stars as Billy's dad and Carole Shelley as his grandma with Kate Hennig playing Ms. Wilkinson.
I loved Broadway's version of Billy Elliot and think you should probably consider going to the Imperial Theater yourself to catch the show. If you need advice on obtaining tickets, our ticket guru's are here to assist you.
Applause Ticket Service is a licensed ticket agency for Billy Elliot and all the Broadway Shows. We are open seven days a week to help. We even stay open till midnight now so we can talk to people from all over the country at their convenience. Most of the other ticket companies go home early but that's OK with us. We'll serve people whenever they need us.

David Bryan's Memphis The Musical
Every time a write a blog on one of the Broadway Shows, I do admit that I try to tell our readers the story line, who stars in the show as well as who writes the book, lyrics and music for a show. In this post I would like to talk to you about one of the most entertaining Broadway Shows I've had the great pleasure of attending this season. It's called Memphis The Musical and it is one of the standout shows I've seen in the last year or two.Memphis The Musical is a brand new R & B musical with a book by Joe DiPietro (he wrote the lyrics also) and Bon Jovi's David Bryan (music). Memphis The Musical opened on Broadway on October 19. 2009 and is 2 1/2 hours long with one intermission. It takes place in 1950's Memphis, Tennessee and tells the very interesting story of a white DJ called Huey Calhoun (played by Chad Kimball) whose great passion for "race" music and his desire to bring this music to "cross over" to be played on the mainstream radio stations locally and then throughout the country. He loves the music and falls for Felicia Farrell (played by Montego Glover) who is a beautiful black singer he thinks he can make a star.
The real question that Memphis The Musical asks is can the 1950's be the time to innovate the music industry as well as expect the culture of the times to accept Huey and Felicia as a couple.
Memphis The Musical has an energy to it that "rocks" from the minute the current goes up to the second it comes down. It's filled with original music, solid acting and aims to please its audience.
Direction is by Christopher Ashley. Mr. Ashley does a beautiful job in keeping the show moving and helping us to understand the characters that surround Huey and Felicia throughout the performance. The CD of the music for Memphis The Musical has hit store shelves on December 11, 2009. Whether you make it to the show or not, the music is awesome and if you love music like most of us do, you'll be glad you made this purchase for sure.
If you think you might want to see Memphis The Musical, may I suggest you consider contacting the local ticket experts at Applause Ticket Service in New York? These folks know the best seats for the show and have access to amazing seats at discounted prices. Right now, Applause is offering access to its Below Face Value ticket deals. The BFV ticket deals allow Applause Ticket Service to offer orchestra and front mezzanine seating at prices that are lower than the original price printed on the tickets.
What could be better than experiencing personal service from a ticket service and getting into the theater to see Memphis The Musical at below face value prices?
I hope you found this information on Memphis The Musical helpful.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Only 2 Weeks to see White Christmas on Broadway
When White Christmas played its premier run on Broadway in November and December 2009, the show sold out just about every performance. This year it looks like a different story unfortunately. The current recession has affected most of the Broadway Shows. But fortunately for people that really like coming to see Broadway Shows, I am pleased to report that the producers of White Christmas are offering reduced price tickets for the remaining 17 days that the show will play at the Marriott Marquis Theater in New York City through January 3, 2010.
White Christmas is based on the 1954 classic film starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. I loved the film which told a cute, heart warming story of 2 former G.I.'s named Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, who after the army had a very popular nightclub act. When they heard they're former general was in financial trouble in retired life, they set out to help him out by staging a variety show in the "old man's Vermont lodge. The lodge hasn't been doing much business lately and the current heat wave is turning away ski vacationers. Phil also wanted to chase after a couple of young ladies who were supposed to play a gig up at the lodge.
White Christmas offers a nostalgic look at love, life, emotions under the umbrella of Christmastime. I saw White Christmas last month and although I thought last years performers were stronger in their respective roles, this years editions worked hard and aims to please. The second act is so powerful, you'll want to see it again.
Right now discount tickets for every performance except Saturday evenings (when the show sells out), can be purchased with one simple call to Broadway's local experts at Applause Ticket Service. No pressure to buy, we like talking about Broadway Theater. It keeps us on our game.

Does it Make Sense to Pay a Premium Price for Broadway Theater Tickets?
Years ago, those of us licensed ticket agents for Broadway Shows never sold "premium tickets" for any show. That's because Broadway Shows never had premium pricing. In general premium seating refers to the first 10 rows center orchestra seats in most theaters in New York City. In the old days, all you had to do to get the premium seats was to purchase tickets as soon as a show put a block of tickets on sale or be considered a VIP and buy your tickets through the office of a shows producer. Then about 10 years ago or so, the theaters started offering these premium seats for a much higher price. Sometimes double or triple the regular price of an orchestra seat. You can imagine how much extra money the shows are taking in now. During Thanksgiving Week, the hit Broadway show Wicked had sales of over $2 million dollars, about 25 % more than a typical busy season week.
Although it may seem unfair for shows to raise the prices for the premium seats, in a way there is justification. Apparently the higher priced premium seats offset some discounted seating that shows offer for slower selling performances. After all, they are in business to make money.
So even though some folks don't mind paying higher prices for premium seating for "sell out" shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot and The Adams Family, I have a little secret to share. Most of the other 30 shows or so that are typically playing on Broadway on any given moment, do not sell all their inventory for every performance. What this means for the public is the "reverse" of premium pricing. Something Applause Ticket Service calls BFV pricing, or Below Face Value pricing.
Below Face Value pricing is a simple concept really. Applause buys the tickets at a discount, adds on a small service fee for our efforts and service, then sells them to you at the best prices around.
So does it make sense to pay premium prices for Broadway theater tickets? The answer is simple of course. Sometimes yes and sometimes no, in my opinion. But why pay more than you need to?
I hope you found this article on Broadway ticket pricing helpful.
Cheers,
Rich Gladstone

Radio City Has Substanial Discounts for December 17 thru Dec 27, 2009
The Radio City Music Hall has been presenting the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes in New York City for decades now. We just discovered that the show is offering some newly reduced prices for the following performances. They are:December 17, 2010 at 8p,
December 18 at 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 930pm
December 19 at 9am
December 20 at 9am and 8pm
December 21 at 11am, 2pm, 5pm and 8pm
December 27 at 9am
It looks like the recession has put a damper on many performances of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular this year. In order to stimulate business for the show, the Christmas Spectacular offers Applause Ticket Service an insider's price. We simply pass on the savings from the reduced prices, add on a small service charge for our efforts then pass on an amazing price to all Applause customers.
The secret is to try and be as flexible as possible as not all performances are discounted. If you have a few different show times that you might be able to attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, then I can assure you, Applause Ticket Service can get you into great seats at terrific prices.
All you have to do is call, that's right friends just call. When was the last time you purchased tickets for a Broadway Show or any reserved ticket and experienced exceptional service?
Applause Ticket Service can be reached at 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930. They stay open late until their customers go to sleep.

Gift Certificates for Broadway Theater Tickets
Last night I received a call from Kathleen who lives in upstate New York. She said she had called another ticket service looking to buy several gift certificates for Broadway Shows for 3 of her children. She then told me she was unhappy that she was forced to buy each gift certificate for tickets for a certain amount. The amount included a service charge which everyone in the ticket business charges. To make a long story short, she simply wanted to give each gift for $200.00 and asked what happens when the person she gives the gift certificate to "redeems" the gift certificate. So I then informed her if people buy tickets that cost more than the gift certificate amount, they can simply pay us the balance. After all sometimes good seats for Broadway cost as little as $100.00 a seat (if we buy them at a discount) and as high as $180.00 a seat if they are for a hard to get sell-out type of show like Wicked, Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot, South Pacific or soon to arrive on Broadway- The Addams Family.
After talking with Kathleen for a while, we simply arranged for her to purchase 3 separate $200.00 gift certificates and will mail them directly to her today. Kathleen appreciated the Applause Ticket Service (that's us of course) brand of customer service. In particular, Kathleen appreciated talking to a "live" person that knows about Broadway Theater.
This customer story might seem like we are bragging but in this day and age where many companies don't really offer "friendly customer service", we think it is important to mention it. Whether you use our company or not, I personally think it makes sense to do business with people in a company that sincerely appreciate your business. After all, you are literally handing your hard earned money over to them, right?
Applause Ticket Service now has a new customer, one we expect to have for a lifetime. If you need theater tickets for Broadway Shows, my suggestion is to shop around, talk with a few ticket companies. Once you feel comfortable and you are getting great service and value from the ticket company, you'll know what to do.
Happy Holidays from Applause Ticket Service in New York City.

Rich Gladstone

A Little Night Music Opens on Broadway
I usually get to see all the Broadway Shows. It's one of the perks being a licensed ticket agent for Broadway.Although I haven't had the opportunity to see the revival of A Little Night Music, which opened at New York's Walter Kerr Theater this past Sunday December 13, 2009, I am planning on catching a performance in the coming days. A Little Night Music stars theater legend Angela Lansbury and film star Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Just to show you how different people react to A Little Night Music (or for any other show for that matter), you may be interested in seeing 2 brief opinions from Theatermania critics.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Update- December 14, 2009
Although Radio City Christmas Spectacular would probably disagree with me, in all the years I've been in the Broadway ticket selling business, it seems like we used to sell allot more tickets than we do today for this show. I think it must be due to the high ticket prices they charge the last few years. When you couple high ticket prices and an economic recession like most of us have never seen before, everyone sells less tickets. One way to save some money buying tickets for Radio City Christmas Spectacular is to consider calling the local ticket experts at Applause. These guys know how to uncover discounts and special pricing for Radio City Christmas Spectacular for most performances.
We'd tell you how to yourselves but then you might not need us to help you find great seats at amazing prices. If you need some assistance let us know.
We're here to help you.

Broadway Gift Certificates
It seems like the closer we get to Christmas, the more our ticket company gets lots of requests for people giving gifts. The usual questions are do we sell gift certificates for Broadway Shows and how long will the gift certificate be valid for?Every day we make several sales for these gift certificates. Usually people buy them in increments of $100, $200 or $300 each. Some folks even give gifts for $500 and occasionally $1000. Talk about being generous right?
Although I don't think gift certificates for Broadway or restaurants in New York City or even gift cards in general make sense if you know of a certain gift that someone might really covet, the idea of giving a gift for Broadway is certainly unique for at least four of the following reasons.
1. If you know someone who enjoys live Broadway Theater and you give them an Applause Broadway Gift Certificate, chances are they will remember what you gave them for a long time to come. The gift of 'live Broadway Theater" has always been unique.
2. Applause Ticket Agency Gift Certificates never get old. We honor them for as long as you hold onto them so no one ever has to worry that the Gift Certificate will go to waste.
3. Broadway is unique and people that might receive an Applause Gift Certificate would have a chance to see one of at least 30 Broadway Shows. Maybe these folks never get the opportunity to see a live Broadway Show? For some people it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
4. Broadway Gift Certificates could well be a perfect gift for anyone to give a special someone in your life. You can give then to loved ones, co-workers, corporate recognition for a job well done, birthdays, holidays and just about any reason of course.
We always remind customers that we offer Applause Gift Certificates for Broadway Theater throughout the year. Still it seems like when the Christmas holidays draw near, Applause starts to sell allot of more of them.
If you think an Applause Broadway Gift Certificate might be something for you to give this holiday season, we'd love to offer some expert advice for you. Many people think that Broadway Theater is too expensive. I can assure you that this is not necessarily true.
Applause is open to purchase Broadway Gift Certificates around the clock this year. So if you're running up against the clock and possibly running out of time to get a gift for someone you care about, you should know that you have a friend in New York City that can help.
That someone is me friends. Just ask for Rich Gladstone, the Broadway Ticket Man. Rich and his band of Broadway Ticket Experts will never let you down. They can be reached in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. 24 hours a day, every day.
How's that for service?
Have a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy your family and friends.

Rich Gladstone

Group Tickets for Broadway 2010
I would be willing to bet that there are thousands of people every year that are responsible for organizing group outings to see one of the many Broadway Shows playing in New York City. Group sales are the lifeblood of the Broadway Theater. It is consider money in the bank for the shows producers.Typically a group will enjoy a small discount off the regular box off price printed on the ticket. In addition, the theaters generally want their money fairly quickly. So when a show confirms your group, they send you an invoice with a payment deadline date. In general, 20 tickets must be ordered to be considered a group sale. There are some shows that allow 15 tickets to be considered a group sale.
Here's the problem with buying group tickets in my opinion. Most of the time when a group leader orders let's say a group of 50 tickets for a Broadway Show, they often need less than the 50 they bought. Unfortunately this means that someone is going to get stuck with tickets. And Broadway Theaters are not known for giving refunds too often.
I have come up with a solution so you will not get stuck with tickets you don't need. Simply order exactly the # of tickets you know that you need. And if you find you need additional tickets, simply buy any other tickets you need on an as needed basis. This way you don't get stuck with any tickets you don't need and no money is lost.
Another concern is the price you pay. Often you may not know that Group Sales offers "student or seniors pricing". Why pay more than you have to? It's your money after all, right?
If you ever need assistance with purchasing group tickets or maybe you just have a question about Broadway, we hope you'll think of us.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

New Year Resolution-Buy Broadway Theater for Below Face Value Prices
Half the time our phone rings at Applause Ticket Agency (License #71AP1001029) and the average consumer is kind of shocked at the extremely high cost of theater tickets. Some still buy tickets in the orchestra section (the higher priced seating) but many are opting for seating in the mid to rear mezzanine of the theater. Particularly in this economy. In order to solve the problem of losing potential ticket buyers for Broadway Theater, Applause has been actively promoting their Below Face Value Program for over a year now. The BFV Program is a simple one really. Applause finds you the Broadway Show you want to see along with the date and time, then checks to see if your show is on discount. If it is, they can usually save the public over 40 percent of Applause regular pricing.
The BFV Program isn't just because the country is still in the midst of a bad recession. Applause figures the only sure way to keep ticket buyers still going to the theater is to bring down the exorbitant cost of tickets.
If you think you or someone you know can benefit from being able to get great seats at better pricing than all the other ticket agencies charge, maybe you should consider contacting these folks.
When you call Applause, just ask for the BFV ticket deals. There are always 15 to 20 Broadway Shows in the BFV Program.
Cheers

The Lion King on Broadway-Better Pricing Options Now Offered to Theater-goers
Most people that read our Broadway Ticket News blog know that our ticket company, Applause Ticket Agency (License #71AP1001029) tries to convey everything that is happening in the Broadway Theater. Whether it be writing newsworthy blogs pertaining to a new show opening or a show closing on Broadway or offering theater-goers access to their Below Face Value ticket specials, Applause tries to convey viable content that is helpful to the public. In an industry that has long been associated with high ticket prices and unlicensed ticket brokering for Broadway Shows, the folks at Applause truly believe that they can make a big difference in the way the public shops for their tickets. For instance, I'll bet you that most folks think that all the shows charge the same high price for their front mezzanine seats as they do their orchestra seats. In the past you would be right. But as of this coming January 2010, Applause has found out that The Lion King has "reduced" the price of their front mezzanine seats permanently to more than 25 % off their orchestra price. And here's the thing that makes me think that I can understand why they're not bragging about it. Most folks think they want to sit in the "orchestra" section so maybe the show really wants to "hide" the fact that they have lower priced seats in the front mezzanine. If they don't advertise the lower price, chances are they probably will still enjoy the public asking them for orchestra seats. This will of course bring them more money.
In my mind this is what is wrong about Broadway theater. In this economy and with ticket prices on Broadway going higher and higher every year, I believe that the masses want to buy "lower priced" seats. Why hide the fact that The Lion King has lowered the price of the front mezzanine seats? If I were Walt Disney Theatricals, I would want to get some great public relations out of the lowering of some ticket prices.
In any case, Applause would like everyone who is considering obtaining tickets for The Lion King at the Minskoff Theater in New York City to considering calling upon us to assist with your Lion King ticket purchases. And does the public know that most of the time that sitting in the front mezzanine gives theater-goers a better sight-line of all the action happening on the stage? Most of the time we can professionally convince ticket buyers to sit in the front mezzanine as we know the theaters seating arrangements better than most folks do.
When your plans include a visit to The Lion King in New York City, we hope you'll remember this information. And if you need help with obtaining amazing front mezzanine seats at newly reduced prices, consider a call to Applause today. With the money you'll save, you can pick our brains about where you can have dinner before the theater. We love dining out and enjoying telling people about all the amazing places we find to have some great food. Most people like saving money, why not treat yourselves to a free meal from the money you save using our ticket service?
I love the Broadway Theater. More importantly, I love helping the public become more informed about their seating and pricing options.
Broadway ticket prices have gone up every year for several years now. It is about time that someone help the public gain access to the very best seats and prices available. If you're one of these people, maybe you want to consider a call to Applause.
What do you think?

Rich Gladstone

Final Weeks For Shrek-Closes January 3
I still can't believe that Shrek will be gone in less than a month. For those of you who read my blogs know how much I loved the show. Going into it I thought I was going to hate it. You see cartoon characters singing and dancing on stage aren't really my thing. So why would I think that Shrek would be any different. I think that it is so unfair that a show as good as Shrek is being forced to close it's doors. Look I know that tickets these days are expensive. The fact is the show just wasn't as marketed as well as it could have been. I can only hope that the upcoming National tour will allow the show to gain a new audience and maybe make a little money at the same time. We will soon find out. Get your tickets to see Shrek on Broadway. Time is running out.Until next time theatre fans.JWB

Customer Story
This week's customer story comes from a gentleman from North Carolina who bought tickets from us last year to see Jersey Boy's.This was the first time he had used us and was so pleased with the great seats we got him last time he wanted to see if we could help him again. I asked him what show he wanted to see and he told me that his wife has been begging him for years to take her to see Wicked. He told me that they were coming in again around the same time and asked what we had. Well as most people know Wicked is still the most popular show on Broadway. Not too mention he wanted tickets right before New Years Eve when everyone in their mother will be flocking to New York.Well I looked and looked to see what we had and the only thing that was available were Premium seats for about $350 a piece. Now while he agreed those were excellent seats it was a little more than he was planning to spend. I told him that there were plenty of other shows playing that day that not only could I get him great seats but at a price that was well within his budget. I just happened to have two very nice Orchestra seats for Billy Elliot for that night. To be honest he had never heard of the show but after telling him the story and the fact that it won the Tony Award for Best Musical he and his wife were sold. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Sondheim On Sondheim Finalizes Cast
That's right all you Sondheim fans. It was just announced that casting for the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Sondheim On Sondheim is now complete. Joining previously announced stars Barbara Cook,Vanessa Williams, and Leslie Kritzer are Tom Wopat,Norm Lewis,Euan Morton, and Matthew Scott. Previews are seat to begin at Studio 54 on March 19, 2010 with an official opening set for April 22. Here is a brief description of the show according to a Roundabout source."Even though millions of fans know his songs by heart, few know much about Stephen Sondheim himself. Until now. Roundabout presents Sondheim on Sondheim, an intimate portrait of the famed composer in his own words...and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, you'll get an inside look at Sondheim's personal life and artistic process. An ensemble cast of Broadway’s best will perform brand-new arrangements of over two dozen Sondheim tunes, ranging from the beloved to the obscure. …This unique experience will take you inside the life and mind of an ordinary New Yorker… with an extraordinary talent."
This new production is directed and conceived by longtime Sondheim collaborator James Lapine. As of now the show is a limited engagement set to run thru June 13, 2010. However if reviews are good expect the show to be extended well into the summer. Tickets are set to go on sale after the first of the year so don't delay. Get your tickets to see Sondheim on Sondheim.

Big Apple Circus Discount Tickets
If you remember being a child and going to the circus, maybe you want to consider securing tickets for your family to this years production of the Big Apple Circus. The Big Apple Circus plays to children and adult audiences about a dozen times a week. The Big Apple Circus plays under the "Big Apple Big Top" but is much different the the circus you grew up with. The emphasis is on humor and theatrical focus and the action takes places in only "one ring". No seat is more than 50 feet away. You will get a chance to "America's Best Clown" Bello. In addition there are jugglers, trapeze artists, horses and "wacky" dogs that entertain in a way that you'll remember for a long time.
Applause Ticket Agency (License #71AP1001029) has been able to obtain discount tickets for the Big Apple Circus now through January 18, 2010. The Big Apple Circus takes place in Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park located on 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenue. The show is an hour and 50 minutes.
The friendly ticket experts at Applause look forward to helping you with tickets for the Big Apple Circus.
Sincerely,

My Thoughts On South Pacific
Who would have thought that a fifty year old show would not only be one of Broadway's most popular shows but still continue to sell at almost full capacity almost two years later. South Pacific first premiered on Broadway in 1949 and here we are in 2009 and it is still one of Broadway's biggest success stories. I had the great fortune of seeing the show prior to it's opening in March 2008 and was so surprised at how current and relevant the show remains. Most shows from the "Golden Age of Broadway" tend to feel some what dated and a little hokey if you know what I mean. That is not the case with South Pacific. Not only is it one of the most well produced shows on Broadway but it is what Broadway musicals are all about. A great story that touches your heart. A score that even days later you are still humming as you walk down the street. And a cast of characters that help make your Broadway experience one that you will cherish for years to come. Shows like South Pacific don't come around every day. See it now before it is too late.

Everybody Loves Billy
Don't know what Billy I am talking about? Why Billy Elliot of course. The 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. The show which first premiered in London in 2005 is one of Broadway's biggest hits in years. Now I've never seen the movie. In fact I am the only one in my office who hasn't seen the show. Look I'm sure it is an amazing show. It wouldn't be grossing a million dollars a week and won all those awards if it wasn't. It just isn't my type of show. Besides I don't think that Sir Elton John is losing any sleep because some ticket seller from New York hasn't seen his show. The fact is that Billy Elliot is here to stay my friends. People love it. Maybe you will too.JWB

A friend of mine runs one of the finest tour operator companies in the world called New York City Vacation Packages. They specialize in providing New York City hotel packages. New York City Vacation Packages can help you obtain the best sightseeing tour excursions, meals at amazing restaurants and any Broadway Show you might want to attend. His name is Joel Cohen and he was quite gracious in writing an article about our Broadway ticket company called Applause. It seems one of New York City Vacation Packages customers had a problem while visiting New York city over Thanksgiving weekend. Fortunately Joel and I know that the travel business has an occasional problem here and there. Both of us were "on call" to solve the problem and my friend Joel wrote a wonderful blog that all points to "customer service" being a necessary character when the traveling public requires special attention. Especially during emergency times.
Here's Joel's blog. I hope you enjoy it.

Jersey Boys Still Packing Them In Eight Times A Week
Never in a million years did I think that I was going to like Jersey Boys. Those of you who read my blogs know that I am not a big fan of jukebox musicals. So when I was first offered the chance to see the show in December 2005 I passed. Any show that has that much hype was bound to disappoint me. Cut to two years later and I was given the chance to see it again. Once again I hesitated but since it was Halloween and I didn't really have any other plans I figured I would give it a shot. After all if it was really bad I could always leave after the first act.Well you will never believe what happened. Not only did I stay for the whole thing but that night I became a fan not only of the show but of the Four Seasons as well. What an amazing show. From the very beginning I was hooked. Great music. Great performances from top to bottom, and a story that was both inspirational and tragic at the same time. I was kicking myself for waiting so long to see it. Trust me. I will never make that mistake again. Now in it's 4th sell out year Jersey Boys continues to entertain people from all around the world. It is a must see. Get your tickets today.

Now Is The Best Time To Get Your Tickets To See Wicked
Don't tell me you still haven't seen Broadway's most popular show. It's only been playing for six years. Now in this economy a trip to New York can be expensive. The good thing is you don't have to spend thousands of dollars to come to New York just to see Wicked. In fact you might even be able to see Wicked where you live. Right now the show is currently playing not only in New York and London but at different theatres all around the world. Not bad for a show that didn't get very good reviews when it first opened. What do critics know? They're not the one buying the tickets. You are.The show which first opened in October 2003 continues to break box office records at the Gershwin Theatre on a weekly basis. In fact I dare say one of these days Wicked will eventually surpass The Phantom of the Opera as Broadway's longest running show. Yes I know they have a long way to go but if any show has a chance Wicked does. Now just because Wicked is Broadway's biggest seller doesn't mean you can't get tickets. Here at Applause we can get you tickets to any show of your choice. Looking for this Saturday night? No problem. How about New Year's Day? Just give us a call and let us do the rest. It's that easy. So what are you waiting for? You don't want to be the only one of your friends who hasn't seen Wicked do you? Why not give us a try. You'll be glad you did.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury Open on Broadway on December 13, 2009
The show is called A Little Night Music and it is based on an Ingmar Bergman film called Smiles of a Summer Night. The music is by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler (from the original 1973 production) and it is the very first revival of A Little Night Music on Broadway.A Little Night Music is about Desiree Armfeldt, an aging actress who is rekindling her romance with an older married man who becomes impatient with his constantly resistant "virginal child-bride". Additional romantic encounters take place during one weekend in the country in turn of the century Sweden.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is making her Broadway debut. She has been seen in many films that include Chicago and won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Vilma Kelly. Angela Lansbury plays the role of Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. Ms. Lansbury has been acting for more than 60 years now, winning 5 Tony Awards, most recently winning the award for Blithe Spirit in 2009.
Our ticket company, Applause (License #71AP1001029), always gets complimentary tickets to see a show before its official opening. Although we are anxiously awaiting an invitation to see A Little Night Music we haven't heard any word of mouth from the preview audiences that have seen A Little Night Music. As soon as we see the show, we will write a review for our Broadway Ticket News readers.
It's been a Broadway season that has been exciting to say the least. We have seen Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig play in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet and soon we will see Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson star in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. We are hoping that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury shine in A Little Night Music and that the show enjoys a long run on Broadway.
Cheers,
Rich Gladstone

Some Important Broadway Theater News
Broadway ticket prices need to come down to earth in my opinion. Those of us that have been involved in New York City tourism for many years know a thing or two about Broadway Shows. In particular, one can't help but notice the absurd prices that shows expect the average theater-goer to pay.
With this thought in mind, I thought it made sense to tell the average consumer an exceptional way to obtain high priced tickets for most of the Broadway Shows, and at reasonable prices.
The following is a current listing of Applause Ticket Agency's Below Face Value ticket offerings for Broadway. Below Face Value is a program launched in early 2009 by Applause with thoughts of reaching consumers that go to the theater on a regular basis as well as provide reasonably priced tickets for a market of people who probably wouldn't go to the theater because of the high ticket prices.
This list is created as of today and advises people about discounted shows and valid performance dates to get in at lower prices as well as shows that are not on discount but that can be obtained at the very best market prices in the entire country.
I hope you find this information helpful to you.

Only 27 Days to See White Christmas on Broadway
For those of you that may want to take advantage of the wonderful family shows playing in New York City over the Christmas Holidays, I just wanted to make you aware that Irving Berlin's White Christmas might be just the item you want to pickup for the loved ones in your life. White Christmas plays at New York's Marquis Theater for another 27 days. White Christmas played over the Christmas Holiday's in 2008 and are reprising the show again this month.White Christmas tells the tale of 2 former army pals that try to help out their former military commander who is having some business troubles. The original film was a classic and starred Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby. It's always been one of my favorites.
If you are interested in obtaining tickets for White Christmas, consider a call to the local ticket agents at Applause Theater Service in New York City. They love talking about all the Broadway Shows. They can be reached at 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930.
The Applause Ticket experts have some insider ticket deals to offer for most performances. Just remember that there are some "peak" blackout dates where discount tickets are not available.
I hope you find this information helpful.

How to buy Broadway Show tickets
Need Broadway Theater tickets? Have you been on web site after web site looking to purchase tickets for a Broadway Show or two and seemed more confused than ever about what to buy and which ticket company to use? This blog post isn't looking to sell tickets to Broadway. All I'm trying to do as I write is convey the mass confusion that is going on when consumers shop for Broadway Show tickets.
My suggestion as a licensed ticket agent of the Broadway Theater is simple really. Go online and search the Broadway Show you are looking for. Make some notes about seating and pricing. Then place a phone call to ticket companies. Talk to a live person, someone knowledgeable about Broadway Theater. Then get a quote on seating locations and a final price that includes shipping and pickup and delivery of your tickets. You want to know the final price, not the price before some companies "hit" you with the extra fees they charge so they can simply make more profit. You know what I mean-the extra service fees not disclosed when you first get a price quote or the extra "cancellation fees" some of these companies charge just to make more money.
Anyway, as I said earlier, this is not intended to advertise ticket sales for Applause Ticket Agency. It's mearly an article intended to make consumers aware of how to go about the business of obtaining theater tickets that don't cost you an arm and a leg.
I hope you find this blog post on how to buy Broadway Show tickets helpful. If so I'd appreciate you passing it on to others that might find the information helpful too.

34 Days Left to See 39 Steps on Broadway
What do you get when you cross an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece with an exciting spy novel? How about adding in a dash of Monty Python shtick as well? There are only 34 days left to catch a performance of The 39 Steps at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York City. The 39 Steps has been playing for nearly a year in New York. The 39 Steps is a very creative comedy that features a cast of only four actors that play more than 150 different character roles. The show tells the story of a man named Richard Hanney, an innocent bystander as he races across the country to try and solve a mysterious crime, before the authorities blame it on him.
The 39 Steps plays daily except on Mondays. It is a comedy and only an hour and 50 minutes long.
With only 32 performances of The 39 Steps to go, if you think you might want to catch a performance of this show, we'd love to help. Just pick up the phone and call Rich, Todd, Claudia, Carol or Jay at Applause Ticket Agency (License #71AP1001029) at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. Rosie and Bill's Review on Finian's Rainbow on Broadway
It is my pleasure to give Applause Broadway Ticket News readers a new review on Broadway's Finian's Rainbow. Finian's Rainbow is playing to excited audiences 8 times a week and our very own Music and Lyricist team Rosie and Bill Mearns saw a recent performance of the show. The following is their review of Finian's Rainbow. Enjoy it and if you think you might want to catch a performance of Finian's Rainbow at New York's St. James Theater, we hope you'll consider calling one of our friendly Broadway ticket experts. Right now through February 28, 2009, these folks at Applause Ticket Agency (License #71AP1001029) can get you amazing seats at below face value prices.
Here's Rosie and Bill Mearn's review. Enjoy.

Finian’s Rainbow....an Important Revival
The Pot O’ Gold in Finian’s Rainbow is Beautiful Music! We are so tired of hearing “why are they doing so many revivals?” If these wonderful shows were not brought back, many generations would never get a chance to see how great Broadway used to be. They call it the “Golden Age of Broadway” because these shows were rich in golden talent. Scores used to have beautiful, memorable songs that people would be humming as they left the theater. These songs would be recorded by popular singers, that could actually sing, and they would be Number 1 on the charts. Why is the public so accepting of the mediocre and mundane trappings of some of today's shows? Rogers & Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Julie Stein & early Stephen Sondheim, are some of the names of the brilliant team efforts of the glorious past. South Pacific, now into it’s second year, is wonderful. The minute the Overture starts you feel the excitement in the audience. Finian’s Rainbow has the same effect on it’s audience. The casts of both of these shows are outstanding. The stories are meaniful, as well, as entertaining. They knew how to make people laugh and cry in a two hour period. As we were leaving the St. James Theare the other night, all we heard were people singing “That Ole’ Devil Moon,” “Look To The Rainbow,” and “How Are Things in Glocca Mora.” The stranes of those glorious songs followed us down 46th Street and all the way home.

Group Tickets for Broadway Shows
Did you ever hear about a guy named Todd Freeman who sells tickets at a small "mom and pop" type company called Applause Ticket Agency? Todd is a veteran actor, director turned ticket seller for over 18 years now.Although most folks call on Todd and Applause to handle ticket requests for 2 to 6 people going to see one of the 29 Broadway Shows running, lately it seems like Todd is signing up allot more groups that seek out his expertise. Todd manages to place the group with the right kind of show and will even come up with a place to have a great meal or two while spending time in New York.
If you and your group could use a helping hand with setting up theater tickets and meals for your group, you might want to check this out.
I hope you find this information helpful.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Save On Phantom This Winter
That's right theatre fans. Now is the best time to get tickets to Broadway's longest running show. I am of course talking about The Phantom of The Opera. The 1988 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. I first discovered the show back in high school and it is still one of my favorites. In fact I recently got the chance to see the show again and it was just as good as I remembered it.Beginning on January 3, 2010 seats are available for The Phantom at the Opera at some incredible savings. Please note that tickets for a Saturday evening are not discounted. So what are you waiting for people? Now is the best time to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. This deal is only running thru March 13 so don't delay.

Final Weeks To See Shrek On Broadway
I still can't believe that a show as entertaining as Shrek is being forced to close. Now I'm not going to point fingers. There are a number of reasons why the show was not successful. The sad part is that Shrek is a really good show. Not only is it one of the few shows that the whole family can enjoy but it is by far one of the most touching and enjoyable evenings that I have spent in the theatre in a very long time.JWB

Customer Story
I know. I know. It's been almost two weeks since my last customer story. I'm sure you're all going thru withdrawal right? Anyway this week's story comes from a very nice lady from Wisconsin who is bringing her son into the city for some last minute shopping and to see the lighting of the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center. Which by the way was last night. She wanted to see a show that he would enjoy as it was his first show and not have to mortgage their house to do it. I suggested either Shrek or The Lion King. She thought they would probably enjoy The Lion King more as they both loved the movie and a friend of hers who was recently here raved about it.Because she was on a tight schedule the only date she had available was Saturday night. One of the most popular nights of the week. Luckily I had two seats left in Row V of the Orchestra. Now before you think that Row V sounds too far back it is not. When The Lion King first opened in 1997 it was at the newly refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street. That theatre holds almost eighteen hundred seats. In 2000 the show moved to the Minsfoff Theatre which holds about sixteen hundred seats. Now while that may not seem like a lot the new theatre is structured a little differently. You see by being further back in the Orchestra you are not only slightly elevated but being further back you really get a better overall view of everything that is going on.
For those of you who have not seen The Lion King I can tell you that it is a very big show. Now sure you can sit up front but why spend all that money too not see everything. Anyway back to my customer. She took my recommendation and purchased the seats. Plus I was able to give her a discount because she had a NY Pass. For those of you who have not tried the NY Pass I suggest you do. It has discounts for hundreds of things to do and see while in New York. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Bye Bye Birdie Announces Closing Date on January 24, 2010
We just got the word that the Roundabout Theater Company's production of Bye Bye Birdie will close on January 24, 2010. Bye Bye Birdie stars two of my favorite movie star/Broadway actors-Gina Gershon and John Stamos.According to Todd Haimes, Roundabout's artistic director, Bye Bye Birdie has been steadily doing over 90 % capacity each week but with the two stars leaving the show soon, apparently future ticket sales were not strong enough.
If you'd like to see Bye Bye Birdie before it closes on Broadway, consider a call to Applause Ticket Agency in New York. They can get you into the show and at insider below face value pricing.
Could you ask for anything more?
Applause can be reached in New York City toll free at 800-451-9930. They love helping people get into the theater.

Applause Theater Service Promotes Off Broadway Theater
Most of the tickets Applause Theater Service provides to customers are for Broadway Theater. Still, Off Broadway theater is terrific to see live on stage, just with less in the way of staging. All Off Broadway shows take place in smaller theaters with less than 300 seats, so every seat is amazing when you think about it.There are several shows that play Off Broadway in New York. Here's a list of the more popular ones.

A Steady Rain Plays an Extra Show on Broadway Sunday December 6, 2009
Time is running out to get the chance to see Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig on the Broadway stage as their limited engagement in A Steady Rain comes to an end this Sunday December 6, 2009. In addition to the usual 3pm performance there will be a 7pm show added. The 7pm show will be the final performance of A Steady Rain at the Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. Proceeds from this performance will go to benefit New Yorkers For Children and The NYCPBA Widows & Children's Fund.
A Steady Rain is a new play written by Keith Huff with direction by John Crowley. The show has been playing to near capacity audiences since September. A Steady Rain tells the story about a few harried days in the lives of two Chicago police detectives, lifelong friends until their differing view of events changed their lives permanently.
A Steady Rain is played by the actors on stage without much staging other than a few chairs and a light. Although you can consider the play monologue like, somehow Mr. Jackman and Mr. Craig manage to make this play exciting. Exciting so as I felt myself sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next development to occur.
On behalf of Broadway theater lovers everywhere, I would like to personally thank everyone associated with A Steady Rain for bringing this show to Broadway. Halfway through the 2009-2010 new Broadway season, A Steady Rain gave us something to cheer about.
Cheers,

Broadway And Musical Revivals
That's right theatre fans. Right now there are eight musical revivals currently running on the Great White Way with two more set to open in the Spring. They are Bye Bye Birdie,Chicago,Finian's Rainbow,Hair,A Little Night Music,Ragtime,South Pacific,West Side Story, Promises, Promises, and La Cage aux Folles. Quite a lineup.Let's take a look at each one.Chicago-Broadway's longest running revival first premiered back in 1975. Now while the show was very well received it was overshadowed by A Chorus Line and ran less then two years. It wasn't until twenty-one years later when it was brought back to life by the Encores! theatre series and went on to become of the most acclaimed shows in years. It was quickly moved to Broadway and the rest is history. Three theatres and thirteen years later it is still going strong. Not bad for a show with no sets or special effects.
Bye Bye Birdie-This new productions marks the first Broadway revival since the original 1960 production. The show which did not receive the greatest reviews is actually selling very well and has recently extended it's run into April 2010. I guess the show is more popular than anyone thought. The truth is there are very few shows on Broadway that the whole family can enjoy. This happens to be one of them.
Finian's Rainbow-Who would have thought that a sixty-two year old show would be one of this season's most well received productions? The show which premiered on Broadway in 1947 was like Chicago revived at Encores! to critical acclaim earlier this year. How long the show lasts is anyone guess. I personally did not see it. It seemed a little hokey for my tastes. It seems to have an audience so time will tell how long it will be around.
Hair-One of my favorite shows from last season was an unexpected surprise for me. Yes I knew a couple of the songs going in but never did I expect to be as moved as I was by this production. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Musical revival is a must see and can be enjoyed by people of all generations.
A Little Night Music-The first Broadway revival of one of Stephen Sondheims most loved musicals stars five time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury and Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones in her Broadway debut. Now except for Company and Sunday in the Park with George I usually find his other work to be boring. But who cares what I think. Ticket sales are going thru the roof for the show since it was first announced. The big question is what will the critics think. We will soon find out.
Ragtime-Now I'll admit I didn't care for Ragtime the first time it was here back in 1998. Now while I loved most of the songs I just found it to be long and boring. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald being out that night probably didn't help. The reviews for this new production were quite good and as of now it seems to be selling very well. Most people think that this will be the show to beat come Tony time.
South Pacific-Now almost two years into it's run South Pacific is still going strong. I loved the show and am so happy that it is back on Broadway where it belongs once again. The show which like most on this list won the Tony Award for Best Revival continues to pack them in eight times a week at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. It is a must see.
West Side Story-The movie has been a personal favorite of mine for over twenty years. When it was first announced that the show was coming back to Broadway after a near thirty year hiatus I was very excited. Finally I was going to get the chance to see a live production of one of my favorite shows. I have to say I was slightly disappointed by the production. Now don't get me wrong. The energy on that stage was electric and every performer was giving their all. I just felt it could have been a lot better. I blame the director on that one. Not the cast.
Promises, Promises-To be honest I don't really know a lot about the show except what I have read and that it is based on the Oscar winning movie The Apartment. I do like some of the songs and I hope the show is as good as people have said it is. This new revival stars Emmy Award winners Sean Hayes(Will and Grace)and Kristen Chenoweth(Pushing Daises. I can't wait to see it. I just worry that the Broadway Theatre is too big for this little show. I hope I am wrong.
La Cage aux Folles-Last but not least is La Cage. The show which won the 1984 Tony Award for Best Musical was last seen on Broadway in 2005. Although that production won the Tony for Best Revival it did not have a long run and was a financial flop. This production is based on the award winning London production which is still playing. Douglas Hodge who won an Olivier Award for his performance as Albin will make his Broadway debut. It was just announced that Emmy Award winner Kelsey Grammer has joined the cast as George. I thought the last revival was fine. Not sure what to expect with this one but I am willing to give it a chance.
So there you are. Ten revivals on Broadway. I can't recall there ever being that many on Broadway at the same time. Which one will you see?
