Customer Story

Well after three weeks of blogging about new shows and how you can get tickets for below face value I figured it was time for a more personal story about a customer I spoke to earlier this week. To be honest the week started off like any other. Quiet in the morning and then busy in the afternoon. It was the first Monday in February after all. So while the phones weren’t ringing off the hook Boldchat was. For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about it is a new interactive service that we launched about two years ago where we can talk live to customers when they log on to our website. Anyway back to my story. This week’s customer comes all the way from San Francisco. He was planning a last minute trip for him and his wife and wanted to see three shows while they were here. Their first choice was Billy Elliot and then he asked me to suggest two others that he might like. I suggested Hair as it is one of the best shows on Broadway. He loved that idea. He then mentioned that a friend of his had seen Next To Normal while they were here and thought it sounded different and thought that might be an option as well. I told him that I loved the show and that not only could I get him great seats but at a reduced rate. Same thing with Hair. Well he loved that. Disney On Broadway

Now those of you who read my blogs know that I am not the biggest Disney fan in the world. Although I have to say I did like Aida. In fact I actually saw it four times. Now while I have not seen The Lion King there is no denying it’s popularity. Shows don’t run for twelve years and counting for nothing. In fact to this day The Lion King is still one of our most requested shows. Plus when you consider that there are very few shows out there that the whole family can enjoy it is sure to be a big seller for many years to come.

Now we all know that in this economy the cost of seeing a Broadway show can get expensive. The good thing it doesn’t have to be. In fact the producers of The Lion King have lowered the cost of the tickets to ensure that everybody has a chance to see the show. The Front Mezzanine which normally is the same price as the Orchestra has been lowered. Same with the Rear Mezzanine. Now Is The Best Time To See Wicked On Broadway

Don’t tell me you still haven’t seen Wicked yet? It’s only been playing on Broadway and around the world for over six years. Well there’s no better time than the present. West Side Story To Launch National Tour This Fall

Yes I know it’s my third West Side Story blog of the week. I don’t even blog that much on In The Heights and it’s my favorite show. It was announced yesterday that the North American tour of the show will begin in October at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Other cities and venues will be announced at a later date. Given how popular the show is on Broadway I expect the tour to do very well. Get Your Tickets To See The Addams Family On Broadway Thru Applause Theatre Service

One of this season's most highly anticipated shows is The Addams Family. This new musical which is based on the comic strip created by Charles Addams features music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who wrote the book for Jersey Boys. Previews are set to begin at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 8 with an official opening set for April 8. Reviews for the show were mixed in Chicago prompting the producers to bring in four-time Tony Winner Jerry Zaks as "Creative Consultant". Leading the cast as Gomez and Mortica are Tony winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth who good or bad are a major reason the show is selling so well. Grammy Awards Gives American Idiot A Boost At The Box Office

It was reported today that American Idiot,the new musical featuring the music of Green Day took in over a million dollars in tickets sales the day after the cast performed at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday. According to Michael Reidel of the New York Post Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong insisted that the cast perform with them during the telecast. Looks like it was a good idea as the show sold more tickets in a single day then most shows sell in a week. Buzz about the show is already at a fever pitch and their performance at the Grammy's only made it stronger. Now I'm not a betting man but I think it will come down to The Addams Family and American Idiot vying it out for this year's Tony Award for Best Musical. Let the games begin. Promises, Promises Announces Final Cast

I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to seeing Promises,Promises on Broadway. The show is set to begin previews at the Broadway Theatre on March 27 with an official opening set for April 25. Yesterday the producers of the show announced the remainder of the cast. Joining previously announced stars Sean Hayes, Kristin Chenoweth, Brooks Ashmanskas, Katie Finneran and Tony Goldwyn,are Hairspray Tony winner Dick Latessa as Dr. Dreyfuss, Peter Benson as Mr. Kirkeby, Sean Martin Hingston as Mr. Eichelberger and Ken Land as Jesse Vanderhof.

This new production which marks it's first time on Broadway since the original 1968 production is being directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Rob Ashford and is based on the Academy Award winning film "The Apartment". Now I myself have never seen the film or a live production of the show but I do love Burt Bacharach's music.

Promises, Promises is set to run Monday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees Saturday at 2 PM, with an added 2 PM Wednesday matinee on April 14. Beginning Monday April 19, the playing schedule is as follows: Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 PM.

Tallulah Bankhead On Broadway

Now before you think I've lost my mind I know that Tallulah Bankhead is no longer with us. We all know that the eccentric movie star died a long time ago. I am talking about the new play Looped which stars Emmy winner Valerie Harper as Ms. Bankhead. This show which begins previews on February 19 at the Lyceum Theater takes place in a sound studio in 1965 where Ms. Bankhead is trying re-record or "loop" one line of dialogue for what would turn out to be her last film,"Die, Die My Darling."

Now I've always been a fan of Ms. Harper's television work and although she has been on stage quite a lot over the years I have never seen her perform. Last month I wrote a blog stating that the show has the making of an hysterical night in the theatre or a train wreck of epic proportions. Either way I am dying to see it. West Side Story Makes One Boy's Dreams Come True

Last week I wrote a blog about how the cast of Rock of Ages were raising money for the relief effort in Haiti and now comes news that the cast of West Side Story came together to grant the wish of a very special fan. On February 3rd fourteen year old Queen's native by the name of Elijah was treated along with his family to a performance of West Side Story. Following the show he was given a private backstage tour with the cast and crew where cast member and Tony Winner Karen Olivo presented him with a souvenir West Side Story sweatshirt with the words "Future Director" inscribed on it. This was all possible thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York that grants wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. What a great story. Kudos to the cast and crew of West Side Story for making this one fan's dream come true.

New York City To Get New Theatre

This is exciting news theatre fans. It was just announced today that Lincoln Center is making plans to construct a new theatre atop the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, current home to the Tony winning South Pacific. Construction is set to begin on the 131 seat theatre this Spring. The plan is for the theatre to be completed as early as 2011. According to a source from the theatre the venue will be named the Claire Tow Theatre, in honor of the wife of LCT board member Leonard Tow.

The new space is expected to cost $41 million and besides the theatre it will also house rehearsal and office space, as well as an outdoor terrace. I have included an artist's rendering of the new space. Hopefully this new theatre will give emerging artist's a chance to show their work in a more intimate space.

Cast Announced For La Cage aux Folles

Joining previously announced stars Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles are J. Shively, Veanne Cox, Robin de Jesús, Chris Hoch, Christine Andreas, Elena Shaddow.This new production which is a transfer of the Olivier Award wining London production is set to begin previews on April 6 at the Longacre Theatre with an official opening set for April 18. The show was last seen on Broadway in 2005 where it won that year's Tony Award for Best Revival.Is it too soon already for another revival?Hey if Gypsy can make a comeback after only four years then I guess La Cage can as well. Save This Winter On South Pacific

Soon to celebrate it's 2nd year on Broadway is Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. The show which won seven 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival continues to enchant audiences of all ages eight times a week at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. I had the pleasure of seeing the show during previews and was blown away by the production. The show which opened on Broadway over fifty years ago is just as powerful and relevant as it was in 1949. Now granted I wasn't alive to see the final production but I can only imagine being in the theatre back then and seeing the show for the very first time.

I first discovered South Pacific as a teenager when I performed the show in high school. Even then I could tell that it was a masterpiece.Now most revivals usually slow down after it's first year but South Pacific continues to defy the odds and audiences are still flocking to the show some two years later. By the way if you are one of the few people that haven't seen the show I have good news for you. From now thru March 14 you can get tickets to see this Tony winning musical at prices that are below face value. Who says you can't get a bargain these days? New York's Funniest Show Is Still Avenue Q

Since 2003 Avenue Q has been making people of all ages laugh their a***s off. I should know. I've seen the show over a half a dozen times and every time I see it I find my myself laughing as much as I did the time before. The show which beat Wicked to claim the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical was set to close last September after a six year run on Broadway. Well much to the surprise of everybody including the cast the show decided to move to a smaller theatre Off-Broadway to continue it's run. By the way the show first began Off-Broadway before moving to the Great White Way in the Summer of 2003. Who ever heard a show doing that? Either way I am just glad that one of my favorite shows will continue and allow new audiences to experience one of the funniest shows that I have ever seen. Tickets For Fences To Go On Sale February 8

I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to seeing Fences on Broadway. Now while I enjoy August Wilson's work the main reason I want to see the show is due to it's leading man Denzel Waashington. Besides being my favorite actor he is also one hell of a nice guy. When I saw him in Julius Caeser five years ago I waited outside the theatre to get his see him. Just to let you know I am not one of those people who wait outside the stage door begging for an autograph. I just wanted to meet the man and see if he would sign the playbill for my parent's as they are big fans of him as well. The night I saw the show there must have been at least two or three hundred people waiting to see him. To his credit he stayed until he got thru the entire line. What other star do you know who does that? Anyway back to the reason for my blog. The show is set to begin previews at the Cort Theatre on April 14with and official opening set for April 26.
