Record Breaking Week For Broadway

In one of my earlier blogs today I mentioned that Billy Elliot had a record breaking week. Well as it turns out Billy wasn't the only one who had a great week. Eleven Broadway shows grossed over a million dollars last week with four of those having record breaking weeks as well. These are the following shows.

A Little Night Music-$1,031,543

Billy Elliot-$1,663,895

Hair-$1,121,847

Jersey Boys-$1,440,456

Mamma Mia-$1,315,354

Mary Poppins-$1,323,699

Shrek-$1,387,182

The Lion King-$1,740,130

The Phantom of the Opera-$1,374,875

West Side Story-$1,485,158

Wicked-$2,125,740

Not only that but Next To Normal had a record breaking week with $550,409. Now as bad as the economy was this year it looks like 2009 ended with a bang. What will the next year bring us? We will soon find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Who would have thought a show featuring twenty five songs written by Swedish pop group ABBA would become a Worldwide sensation? I sure didn't. Since it first premiered in London it has grossed over two billion dollars and been seen by over forty million people. The show which just celebrated it's tenth year in London continues to sell out at theatres all around the world. Get your tickets to see Mamma Mia on Broadway and any city around the world. It is a phenomenon.

Mamma Mia And New York Theatre

Being a ticket broker in New York City I have seen hundreds of shows over the years. Now you may not believe this but I have never seen Mamma Mia. In fact out of all the Broadway Theatres I have never been in the Wintergarden. You see for the first eight years that I lived here I was able to avoid Cats and have avoided Mamma Mia for the past eight as well. Am I destined never to step foot in that theatre?

The thing is I don't see Mamma Mia closing anytime soon. Not that it doesn't have it's place on Broadway. It does. It just isn't for me. There will always be shows that I don't like. Doesn't mean that you won't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My favorite show at the moment is In The Heights. Your's might be Jersey Boys or Billy Elliot. Maybe Off-Broadway is your thing. That's the great thing about New York City. There are so many choices. What will you choose?

Until next time theatre fans.

Eight Years Later And Mamma Mia Is Still Going Strong

Still haven't seen Mamma Mia yet? Well what are you waiting for? Now is the best time to see one of Broadway's biggest hits. The show which first premiered in London is not only a huge hit on Broadway but all around the world. In fact it's been estimated that over 30 million people have seen Mamma Mia since it first opened in 1999. Not bad for a show that nobody thought would make it in the first place.

Now I personally have never seen the show. To be honest I probably never will. It just doesn't interest me. Besides I don't think two guys from Sweden are going to lose any sleep because some ticket broker from New York doesn't want to see their little show. It really doesn't matter. Mamma Mia is here to stay. That you can count on.

The 70's Rule-Mamma Mia Is Still Going Strong

In the 17+ years that I have lived here there is only one Broadway theatre that I have never been in. That theatre is the WinterGarden which is home to the International hit Mamma Mia. When I first moved here Cats was playing there and there was no way in hell that I was going to see that piece of crap. Well to be truthful it couldn't have been that bad. It did last 17 years after all. Mamma Mia opened in October 2001 and has been a hit ever since. To be honest the show isn't really my thing. I like some of the music but there is a big difference between 4 singers from Sweden singing those songs as opposed to a bunch of Broadway belters. Look whether I see the show or not it really doesn't matter. The show is still one of Broadways most popular shows and should be for a very long time to come. Me not seeing won't change that.

Broadway-The Perfect Date

Looking to impress that special someone? Why take them to a Broadway show of course. Last week a friend of mine called me asking for a suggestion on a show to take his new lady friend to see. I asked him if she had ever seen a Broadway show and he said," He had just taken her to see Mamma Mia last month and she loved it." I of course suggested my favorite show In The Heights. Well wouldn't you know it but she grew up in New York and is also Spanish. I know what you're thinking. What does that have to do with In The Heights? Well for those of you who have never seen the show or heard anything about it then all I have to say to you is,"Have you been living under a rock for the past two years? The show won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and is one of the most successful shows to open on Broadway in the last few years." Oh and by the way the show takes place in a Spanish neighborhood in Washington Heights. That is a neighborhood in New York for those of you that are wondering. Anyway back to my friend. He took her to the show and of course like everybody I send to the show she loved it. In fact she was so overcome with emotion that when he asked her to marry him she jumped out of her seat and screamed "Yes!" at the top of her lungs. O.K. so I made that last part up. She did love the show though. The point is whether it's In The Heights or Phantom of the Opera there is nothing better than seeing a show with the one you love. Just ask my boss Rich Gladstone AKA The Ticket Man. He's been happily married for twenty-two years after all.

Worldwide Sensation Mamma Mia Leaves Them Dancing In The Aisles

Now in it's 8th hit year on Broadway is Mamma Mia. The show which has been delighting audiences Worldwide since 2000 is still a sensation on Broadway and everywhere in between. I swear I must be the only person left on the planet who hasn't seen this show. Heck I haven't even seen the hit movie staring Meryl Streep. I figure I have plenty of time to see it as the show will probably be here for a long time. The other day I had a regular customer of mine call asking for some recommendations on the new shows coming up this season. When it comes to most shows we have the same tastes. Then he asked if I had seen Mamma Mia.I said that I have avoided it because I really have no interest in seeing it. He in turn asked me if I was married. I told him I was not. That is why I probably hadn't seen it he said. My friend who has been dating a girl took her to see it and she loved it. I guess I'll just wait until I have a girlfriend. Maybe she won't want to see it. Wait. I'm not that lucky. Until then I will keep avoiding the show until that day comes. Let's face facts. The show will survive whether I see it or not. Cats and Les Miz did.

Release Your Inner Dancing Queen.....

I have to tell you I frequently find myself singing or humming the music from Mamma Mia. I have seen the show a few time and loved it each time! Mamma Mia takes the hit songs by the Swedish supergroup ABBA and shapes them around the story of a single mother dealing with her young daughter's upcoming marriage on a picturesque Greek isle. While the daughter plans her future with the love of her life, her mother is haunted by three different men who may or may not be her daughter's father. Among the songs are such familiar '70s staples as “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “S.O.S.,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “The Winner Takes It All.” So if you have not seen this show I recommend you do. It will make you your own Dancing Queen or King for that matter. Don't delay call Applause today!!!! For the best seats at the best prices.
