Get Tickets To See Next To Normal On Broadway
Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score and Best Actress is Next To Normal. The show which first opened Off-Broadway in 2008 is one of the most amazing and powerful musicals I have ever seen.Following a few revisions and another production at the Arena Stage in Washington D.C. the show opened on Broadway on March 27, 2009 to rave reviews. Ben Brantley of the The New York Times wrote that the Broadway production is "A brave, breathtaking musical. It is something much more than a feel-good musical: it is a feel-everything musical."
Rolling Stone Magazine called it"The best new musical of the season – by a mile."In fact I have yet to hear from anybody who has seen it who did not absolutely love it. Now I know there are some people out there that are a little hesitant about seeing the show due to it's subject matter.
Truth is I was a little apprehensive myself until I finally went to see it. I mean come on. A show about a woman with a bipolar disorder does not really scream "Big Broadway Musical" if you know what I mean.
The thing is it is so much more than that. It is about a family dealing with a loss. Who hasn't experienced that at one time in their life? That's what in my opinion makes the show so successful. It's because it's real. That to me is what makes great theatre. That is why Next To Normal is a must see. Get your tickets today.

See Next To Normal On Broadway For Less
I had the pleasure of seeing Next To Normal prior to it's opening on Broadway and thought is was one of the best shows that I had seen in years. If you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend you check it out next time you are here. It is one of the most touching and realistic shows ever written. Now I know there are some of you out there that have heard that show is a little depressing and don't think the show is for you. You know what I say? See the show. Then decide. What do you have to lose? Who knows? You might even like it. Now for those of you brave enough to see it then you have come to the right place. Right now is the best time to see the show. From now thru March 28 we can get you tickets to see this Tony winning musical. Get your tickets to see Next To Normal on Broadway. It is a must see.JWB

Tony Winner Next To Normal To Tour Next Year
That's right theatre fans. One of last season's most critically acclaimed shows is set to tour the country in 2011. If you haven't seen Next To Normal on Broadway well don't you dare miss it if it comes to your city. The show which won three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Actress and Best Music is not only one of the most original musicals out there but one of it's most touching as well. Now I know there are those of you out there who may not want to see it due to it's subject matter or because you might have heard that it is a little on the depressing side. You know what I say? Big deal. Life is depressing at times. There is no such thing as the perfect family or the perfect situation. I don't care who you are. That is what makes the show so powerful. Now for the twenty-five thousand dollar question. The show has been very successful during it's Broadway run. How it will play around the country is another story. I personally think it will do very well if people just give it a chance. We shall see.JWB

Next To Normal-A Must See
This past Spring I had the opportunity to see a show called Next To Normal. It is a new musical which features a wide assortment of musical styles and subject matter that is rarely seen nowadays on the Great White Way. Going into the show I had heard some of the songs but that was pretty much all I knew except that it dealt with a family in crisis.First off let me say that I loved the score. Not only is the music fresh and different but it really touches you in a way that most musicals of today do not. Yes the subject matter can be depressing and somewhat serious at times. Big deal. That's life. We have all gone thru things at one time in our life that have changed who and what we are. Some good. Some bad. It's how we cope with these changes that make us not only stronger but into the people we are today.
Sure the show may not be mainstream like Mamma Mia or Wicked. That's what makes it special. Shows like these don't come around too often. I applause the producers for taking a chance. Will the show be around in say or year or so? I don't know. I would like to think that there is a place on Broadway for a show like Next To Normal. Hopefully six months from now I will still be blogging about this amazing show. It's up to you.

Next To Normal
You think your family is messed up? Well then you'll love the new Broadway hit and Tony winner Next To Normal. The show which first opened Off-Broadway last year at the Second Stage Theater opened to rave reviews across the board this past Spring. I had first heard of the show back in 2005 when it was called Feeling Electric and played at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. That production featured a cast of Broadway veterans including Amy Spanger and Anthony Rapp. The show which went thru several revisions over the years is one of the most original and exciting shows to hit Broadway in years. Being a composer and writer myself I am so happy a show like this has found a place on the Great White Way. It's shows like Next To Normal that give me hope not only for my show but for the future of the American Musical Theatre. The producers of Next To Normal should be commended for taking a chance on a show that while disturbing at times touches your heart and makes you see what is really important in this day in age. That my friends is family. Without them we are nothing. With them we are whole.JWB

Next To Normal-Broadway's Most Emotional Show
Winner of 3 2009 Tony Awards is Next To Normal. The show which received outstanding notices from critics and audiences alike has been selling out nightly since it opened at the Booth Theatre this past Spring. Todd, who is a co-worker of mine has seen the show several times and thinks that it is one of the most touching and moving shows he has seen in a long time. I admit I was a bit skeptical about seeing the show when it was first announced but I am so glad that I went. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Score features an eclectic mix of Pop,Rock, and Country music. Being a composer myself I really enjoyed the mix of styles and am happy that a show like Next To Normal is finding success on Broadway. Now I know some people may find the subject matter a little depressing and perhaps too real at times. That's what makes it so different and if I dare say appealing. Real life is not perfect. We all know that. No one ever said it was. That's why we should embrace shows like Next To Normal. The future of Broadway is in your hands.JWB

Next To Normal Is A Must See
To be honest when I first heard about Next To Normal I wasn't so sure if it I was going to like it. Sure it got pretty good reviews out of town and had developed a cult like following but I still was hesitant about seeing it. I am so glad I did. Anyone who cares about the future of the American musical should get down to the Booth Theater right away and see one of the most original and touching shows of the past decade. Forget what you have heard about the subject matter. Yes it can be a little depressing and heavy at some points but so is real life. That is what makes this show a must see for everybody. Get your tickets to see Next To Normal on Broadway. It is a show that will change your outlook on life as you know it. It did mine.JWB

Longing for Normalcy
Doesn’t everyone long to be Normal? Or h
ave the Normal family? Most people think that everyone else around is normal except them. I hear people say all the time to other people “I wish my family was normal like yours”. Truth is, in this day and age every family has struggles to deal with. Hence the very popular term used today “disfunctional family”. Whatever it may be from divorce to mental illness, these days we all have issues that seem to make it difficult for a family to survive together. NEXT TO NORMAL is a musical that deals with one such family that is struggling to hold together in the midst of a Mother’s long term battle with mental illness. This may not seem like a topic to write a musical about but believe me this powerhouse show is so full of emotion you can’t help but be left overwhelmed. This small Rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt was nominated this year for 11 Tony Awards including Best New Musical. Although it did not win that category, it is still one of the best new shows you could see. It did win the Tony Award for the show’s lead actress Alice Ripley who gives a very moving performance as the Mother struggling to hold things together in her life. It also won the Tony for Best New Score and Orchestrations.
If you like a show that delivers much more than song and dance entertainment then check out this show. You won’t be disappointed…I have seen it twice already and am looking forward to seeing it again.

Customers talk back with Todd

Customers talk back...with Todd
I spoke with the nicest lady today that is coming in with her sisters for the 4th of July weekend and staying the week. Other than seeing a Broadway show…they booked BILLY ELLIOTT, and are considering my favorite NEXT TO NORMAL they are looking for some inexpensive things to do. Well first of all you have to count on seeing the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks. This year they are being set off over The Hudson River on the Westside of New York. You can watch them for free anywhere along the river…or you can book WORLD YACHT cruises for a spectacular evening on the river with a perfect view (this costs a bit more but is well worth it). I then suggested a stop in Bryant Park on a Thursday afternoon to see Broadway in Bryant Park (a free event 12:30-1:45pm) with performers from many Broadway shows. Be sure to head over to Lincoln Center in the evenings From July 7-25 for A Midsummers Night Swing and dance to live bands under the summer sky. Or take in a great meal at one of the many fabulous restaurants on Restaurant Row. Many offer a great prix fixe so you can have a delightfully good meal without emptying the wallet. So much too do!!! They are so excited to be coming to the city. I said call if you have any other questions I am always happy to assist.

2009 TONY AWARDS
I know I am just a theatre geek, but the first Sunday in June was always a day to
look forward to for as long as I can remember...The TONY Awards! Every year we hear networks complain about the ratings and question whether they should still televise the awards or not. I have heard people say they shouldn't because nobody really cares. I know I am not the only person in the world who looked forward to seeing the awards and still do. I have even been able to attend the awards live and considering how much I loved them as a kid, that was almost as exciting as if I had actually won one. Well almost! Maybe not as many people will tune in as they do for the the Super Bowl, but don't discount how much it means to all the theatre geeks in the world who care. For me, it was my only exposure to the great shows in New York. Something that I knew someday I would be able to actually go and see, but at the time the TONYS were as close as I was going to get. For someone who loves theatre and is in the theatre, the TONYS are as big an event as the Academy Awards. So I hope that they will always be televised for all the Broadway lovers and of course Broadway geeks like me out there! This year looks like it will be an exciting line-up. I am just excited to get to see scenes from BILLY ELLIOT , NEXT TO NORMAL , HAIR , WEST SIDE STORY , ROCK OF AGES and SHREK . Now I have seen all of these shows but I am still excited to see them perform on the TONYS. I also look forward to seeing the Broadway/Film and TV personalities who will be presenting. Like Kristin Chenoweth, Edie Falco, Jane Fonda, Angela Lansbury, Nicole Kidman and they are being hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. Now many will think most of these folks are just for ratings but all are either appearing on Broadway now or have in the past.
Get ready and take a look at some of the great new shows and revivals that have been nominated this year on our Applause website.
And then mark your calendar for Sunday June 7th, 2009 and hopefully get as excited as I do every year to see Broadway in the spotlight on the TONY AWARDS!!!!!
I know you will be calling me come Monday June 8th, wanting to get tickets to see winners or just the one that knocked your socks off!

Next to Normal on Broadway- Opening Night is April 15, 2009
The last time I can remember that something powerful Off Broadway became a "hit" on Broadway was when RENT opened on Broadway on April 29, 1986. I am keeping my fingers crossed as I think it is possible for Next to Normal, a new musical drama in previews right now at New York's Booth theater-to possibly win some Tony Awards this June, maybe even for Best Musical. One never knows who will win those coveted awards in the sealed envelopes do we?In any case, Next to Normal arrives on Broadway from sold-out runs at New York's Second Stage Theater and DC's Arena Stage with everyone in the business excited about the April 15, 2009 opening night. David Stone, producer of Wicked and Michael Grief, the former director of Rent, are handling similar responsibilities for Next to Normal.
Next to Normal has a look into how one suburban family copes with mental illness. The show does a very good job of showing the emotion that a mom, dad and their two children go through during various crises that come up over the years.

The show has a wonderful contemporary score filled with over 30 songs with excellent performances from cast members J. Robert Spencer, Alice Ripley, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson. The shows length is 2 hours and 20 minutes and includes a 15 minute intermission.
Prior to the Next to Normal April 15, 2009 opening night, we would like to remind our Applause Theater Service Broadway Ticket News blog readers that we can obtain discounted tickets of admission for you for Next to Normal before it opens. Even though it opens in a few days, there are discounted seats available through April 23, 2009. Depending upon critic's reviews of Next to Normal, the discounts will probably be extended through May of 2009 or possibly discontinued.
If you think Next to Normal might be a show you would possibly want to see, you might consider making a call to Applause Theater Service in New York City to obtain great seats at excellent prices. Applause is a fully licensed New York State ticket agency that sells discounted, regular and premium price tickets to Next to Normal and every Broadway Show playing year round. They have a high level of service and know what it takes to secure the best seats at the best prices for their customers.Personally I really enjoyed this show very much. I've seen a lot of shows and Next to Normal looks like a real "winner" to me. The subject may not be a light one but we all know there are real problems amongst all of our families as we go through life. The cast and creators of Next to Normal do a fantastic job of making us think twice about how very lucky we all are, just to be alive every day. I highly recommend all theater-goers buy tickets to Next to Normal. You'll be glad you did.
Until next time, at the theater.

Next To Normal
In the many years that I have been going to the theatre I have enjoyed and been entertained by so many wonderful productions. However, every once in a while something comes along that feels just a little bit different and effects you , or I should say me on a different level. Just the other night I saw NEXT TO NORMAL and this was one of those experiences. It was captivating, moving and I have to say just reached inside and grabbed me. Not to give too much away, the show is a musical about a family dealing with the Mother's struggle with mental illness. Alice Ripley who has won me over so many times before, with such great performances in Side Show and The Rocky Horror Picture Show gives a heart wrenching performance as the Mother. The show has a small cast (5) and I must say everyone gives a strong and emotionally charged performance. This is one of the best experiences I have had in the theatre for quite some time. Don't miss this!H. Todd Freeman

Next To Normal Begins Previews on March 27
The new musical Next To Normal is set to begin performances tonight on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. Following an acclaimed run Off-Broadway last year and another run at the Arena Stage in D.C. the show will officially open on April 15. Next To Normal, which was penned by Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics), is "a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. It shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact," according to press notes.I have heard nothing but good things about this show since it first premiered last year at the Second Stage Theatre in New York and I personally can not wait to see it. In a season full of revivals and movie to musical transfers it is nice to have something original on the Great White Way.I expect Next To Normal to be a major contender come Tony time.

Theatre Switch:Next To Normal Will Now Play The Booth

Well it looks like The Story of My Life's loss is Next To Normals gain. Following the quick closing of Life it was announced today that the acclaimed production of Next To Normal will now play at the Booth Theatre instead of the Longacre. This is good news as most had felt that the Longacre was too big for this intimate six person show. Previews will begin, as originally scheduled, on March 27 with an opening on April 15.
In a statement Next to Normal producer David Stone said, "When the Broadway transfer of Next to Normal was being planned, my producing partners and I were looking for an intimate 800-seat theatre for this 6-person musical. We were happy to book the Longacre Theatre and were willing to make the concession of closing the balcony to create our desired capacity. However, when the Booth Theatre became available and was offered, we knew it was the right space for Next to Normal without alteration."
Michael Grief, who directed both the Off-Broadway and Arena Stage productions of Next to Normal, will direct on Broadway as well. The Broadway production will also boast the entire Arena Stage cast: Alice Ripley, J. Robert Spencer, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson.
Show times will be Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday-Saturday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 and 7:30 PM.

Big News on the Old Rialto! The New Musical Next to Normal is Set to Play Broadway's Longacre Theatre!
Big Broadway news from Applause Theatre Service! Next to Normal, the acclaimed new musical seen Off-Broadway at Second Stage and more recently at Arlington's Arena Stage, will arrive on Broadway March 27 at the Longacre Theatre. Opening Night is set for April 15th. Just in time for the Tony's!I heard some really great things about
this show from both the critics who loved it and friends of mine who also loved it. I was so sorry that I missed it Off-Broadway(it played right next door to my office!) and now I have the chance to see it. My co-workers feel that this will probably knock Shrek out of the running for the Best Musical Tony this year. I hope not because I happen to like Shrek quite a bit. And I absolutely love Alice Ripley(pictured right) who I first saw in Sideshow and then in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.Ben Brantley of the New York Times describes the show as "New York's first mainstream musical about manic depression." I didn't read the rest of his review, so I can approach the show with an open mind, but I am
intrigued at what appears to be offbeat subject matter. As I've often said, there's no such thing as a bad idea for a
musical, only poor execution.Michael Grief, who directed both the Off-Broadway and Arena Stage productions, will direct on Broadway as well. The Broadway production will also boast the entire Arena Stage cast: Alice Ripley, J. Robert Spencer, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson. (Ripley, Tveit, Damiano and Chanler-Berat were also in the Second Stage Theatre production.)
Producer David Stone added in a statement, "Anyone who has been involved with the creation of an original musical knows that much of the work happens in the rewriting. From the day after Next to Normal opened off-Broadway through opening night at Arena Stage, Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey, and Michael Greif were committed to improving and rewriting this show with a level of dedication and focus I have seldom seen from a creative team. The path to Broadway for Next to Normal has been highly unconventional and, in retrospect, the best thing that could have happened to this musical."
Next to Normal, according to press notes, is "a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. . . . [The musical] shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact."
Show times will be Tuesday-Saturday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 and 7:30 PM.
