Blue Man Group and Stomp-Two Shows Perfect For The Whole Family

Let’s be honest. Except for Disney there aren’t a lot of shows out there that the whole family can enjoy. Well who says you have to go to a Broadway show to have a good time? Guess what? You don’t have too. Since 1991 Blue Man Group has been delighting audiences of all ages not only in New York but around the country, while Stomp has been a fixture on the downtown since 1994. Besides being entertaining both shows are good because unlike other shows they don’t follow the traditional format. They are there to purely entertain. That’s why they are so successful after all these years. So next time you are looking to take the family to a show why not consider Off-Broadway. Who knows? You might even like it. Until next time theatre fans.

OUR TOWN

Thorton Wilder was the winner of three Pulitzer prizes, which is one of the records as far as I know. The prizes were the the book The Bridge at San Luis Rey, the play The Skin of Our Teeth and his most famous work the play Our Town. I have to admit I love plays especially the work of Eugene O'Neil, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Thorton Wilder. I have seen many of the works of the above authors more than 10 times including Our Town.

The current cast of Our Town has received excellent reviews and is rumored to move to Broadway. If you like plays you will definitely enjoy Our Town. There is virtually no scenery in this play but I think this is an asset to the play. I personally this play should be up there with Death of a Salesman, The Iceman Commeth, Streetcar Named Desire, etc, etc.

This is the season when aficionados of Broadway come to New York City to shop and to catch up on all the plays and musicals they missed during the year. I really enjoyed it. I sat on the stage and was about 2 feet from the actors. It is a great bargain and somehing you will never forget.

How About Something A Little Off... Broadway?

We all know there are lots of shows running on Broadway but do we also know about the shows running Off Broadway? Off Broadway has so much to offer for everyone. Take Blue Man Group, Stomp, and Gazillion Bubble Show, all great family shows good for the kiddies and adults alike. All are visual shows and easy and fun to follow. Blue Man and Stomp are loud and high energy while Gazillion Bubble Show allows you to step inside the wonderful world of bubbles. Another great thing about Off Broadway is the theatres, they are smaller then Broadway houses and makes the show experience much more intimate. I myself have enjoyed many of these shows and can only hope you might want to try one. As the saying goes " Try it You'll Like it" . Give Applause a shout we would be happy to discuss what Off Broadway show will suit you!

New World Stages Has the Best of Off-Broadway!

New World Stages is a beautiful facility that houses some of the very best Off-Broadway has to offer. A recent example of a hit that started there was the current Broadway hit "Rock of Ages". The Toxic Avenger musical won the Outer Critics Award for best Off-Broadway musical and sells extremely well. My office manager Todd saw it and loved it. He's a tough critic but had nothing but praise for the show. He said it's a crazy, wacky, fun night of theatre.

The Gazillion Bubble show is still running and is highly recommended for families. The kids went nuts the night I saw the show and I quite liked it a lot myself!! Altar Boyz is one of my favorite shows that's been running for a few years now. The music is so good and the choreography is fantastic. High energy, very funny stuff! Loved it! The rest are the adult comedy Flamingo Court(now in its 2nd year), My First Time(Adults only/the title speaks for itself), and a show that performs only on Monday nights called For Lovers Only(Love Songs...Nothing But Love Songs...5 Marvelous Singers...100 Bewitching Songs!).

And finally a show that I sat through cringing at first but eventually won me over once you get beyond the nudity is NAKED BOYS SINGING!, the fifteen-song celebration(great music) of the male form will hit yet another milestone: it will celebrate its tenth anniversary on Saturday July 25th. The Naked Boys are appearing on New World Stages Stage 4, graciously shared with the other (clothed) Boyz of New World Stages: Altar Boyz! New World Stages is located at 340 West 50th Street, between 8th & 9th Avenues. Naked Boys plays Fridays at 10:30pm and Saturday evenings at 6pm.

Still drawing both equally gay and straight crowds(great bachelorette party), NAKED BOYS has become a New York mainstay, while the London production, which recently opened to critical acclaim, announced it will soon transfer to the West End. Other productions are currently running in Las Vegas and Provincetown, and more will open within the next year, including a production in Lisbon, and another in Berlin.

An Applause Sales Expert can get you tickets below the normal face value of the ticket for all of these shows. It's a deal that you shouldn't pass up. Call 800-451-9930

"The Toxic Avenger Musical" Arrives Off-Broadway March 18th

A lot of people think that the Off-Broadway Musical is dead. Well I for one don't think that's true. Look at the transfer of Rock of Ages and the success of Altar Boyz and the Marvelous Wonderettes. This show has the makings of another Little Shop of Horrors. A show that could have a huge cult following just like the movie has enjoyed since 1986. With music by Bon Jovi's own David Bryan the Toxic Avenger Musical has been born. The show will play the New World Stages and begins performances on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009. The show will star Nancy Opel who we all loved in Urinetown. She's a wacky character actress who is just perfect for this show. I can't wait to see this zany, crazy lady do her thing in this screwball musical comedy!

The Toxic Avenger is set in the mythical town of Tromaville, Exit 13B, off the New Jersey Turnpike. An aspiring earth scientist, Melvin Ferd the Third, is determined to clean up the town's burgeoning toxic waste, until he is tossed into a vat of radioactive goo and emerges as a seven-foot mutant freak and New Jersey's first superhero. Armed with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he's out to save New Jersey, end global warming and woo Sarah, the prettiest, blindest librarian in town.

"THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES" is a cotton-candy
colored, non-stop pop musical blast from the past! I saw this incredibly funny and most entertaining show last night with my Mom and some cohorts and we all fell for these talented girls! A great evening full of laughs and great music. Featuring your favorite songs from the '50s and '60s, THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes - Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match(what powerhouse voices they are)! As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to the girls performing such classic 50’s and 60’s songs as“Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “It’s My Party,” “It’s In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)” and so many more! You’ve never had this much fun at a prom and you will never forget THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES- a must-take musical trip down memory lane.

Having been in the ticket selling business for over ten years now, (four of which have been at Applause) I would have to say that most of our calls and or ticket requests are for Broadway shows. Makes sense right? I mean when you think of New York and theatre what is the first thing that comes to mind? Broadway. Now don't get me wrong, I love Broadway. That's the whole reason I moved here over sixteen years ago. To be an actor on a Broadway stage. But let's not forget about Broadway's little brother.I am talking of course about Off-Broadway.(Although not so little anymore)Some of the most innovative not to mention original plays and musicals can be found near or below 42nd Street. So what do you have to lose? You might actually enjoy your self. And that's a good thing. And if you need any help getting tickets or even need suggestions on what to see Applause Theatre Service is here to help.

Applause theatre can get you the best seats for Off Broadways New World Stages

New World Stages / to order best seats to all of these hit shows click here.

New World Stages is the new face of Off-Broadway located in Times Square and under the former site of Madison Square Garden. This newly renovated underground facility and is centered on a large common lobby and gallery, with two bars, coat checks, generous bathroom facilities and a separate public lounge. With five theaters ranging in size from 199 to 499 seats. Convenient to everything and great parking located at 50th St between 8th and 9th Avenues.

It currently houses some of the biggest Off-Broadway musicals. The first of which being one of my favorites, "Altar Boyz". And we had a ball. Funny as all heck with great music! The audience eats them up!!

Altar Boyz
Altar Boyz, the new musical comedy and critically-acclaimed hit of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, is the hilarious account of a struggling Christian boy-band (with one nice Jewish boy) looking for their big break in the Big Apple. Hailed as "high-octane entertainment" (TALKIN? BROADWAY), ALTAR BOYZ tells the holy inspiring story of 5 small-town boys ? Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham ? trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Their pious pop act, including lyrics like "Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait" and "Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone," worked wonders on the Ohio bingo-hall-and-pancake breakfast circuit. But when fate brings them to New York, will the boyz take a bite out of the forbidden apple? With angelic voices, sinfully spectacular dancing and a touching story, ALTAR BOYZ is destined to rock the masses of all denominations!

Celia; The Life & Music of Celia Cruz
Celia found international fame collaborating with star flautist and composer Johnny Pacheco, co-founder of Fania Records, the premier record label of ‘Salsa.’ Their huge hits included Quimbara, Toro Mata, and Canto a la Habana. These songs and others are nothing less than the soundtrack of 1970’s New York City.

Celia Cruz has also been captured in film with cameos in such motion pictures as The Mambo Kings and The Perez Family. But it is on record and in live performance where she continues to live. She has recorded with some of the biggest names from all genres of music: David Byrne, Willie Colón, Dionne Warwick, Patti Labelle, Gloria Estefan, Wyclef Jean, Angela Carrasco, Oscar D’Leon, Jose Alberto “El Canario,” la India, Marc Anthony, among many others. Celia continued to record and perform until sidelined by a brain tumor in 2002. While recovering from surgery she managed to make it in to the studio in early 2003 to record her last album, Regalo de Alma.

Celia Cruz died on July 16, 2003. The passing of this icon has left a lasting gap in Latin music and the New York cultural scene, but has certainly sealed her immortal status as the “Queen of Latin Music,” “The Queen of Salsa,” and “La Guarachera de Cuba.”

Jackie Mason; All New Ultimate Jew!!
perfomances begin March 18th

There are very few true legends of comedy that have the ability and insight to take the headlines and topics of the day and shape them into hilarious and original comedy. Starring in his 8th and final one-man comedy tour de force, JACKIE MASON - THE ULTIMATE JEW, Jackie is primed and ready to take a fresh and outrageous look at the election and a long list of other issues that he naturally has a comment on!

Family Fun!!

Gazillion Bubble Show

Bubble Artist Fan Yang brings his magnificent show to New York!

Over the past two decades, Fan Yang has explored the fragile and mysterious world of soap bubbles and emerged with a completely new medium, blending art and science to dazzle audiences around the globe. Hailed by David Letterman of The Late Show, as "The Greatest Bubble Artist in the World", Fan Yang's gorgeous and unique creations defy gravity and logic as we know it. He holds (and has broken his own) Guinness World records for the biggest bubble ever blown, the largest bubble wall ever created (a staggering 156 feet!), most bubbles within a bubble, and in May 2006, was able to encapsulate 22 people inside a single soap bubble on live television in Madrid. Gazillion Bubble Show is the first and only interactive stage production of its kind, complete with fantastic light effects, lasers, and jaw-dropping masterpieces of bubble artistry. Children and adults of all ages are sure to be amazed, mystified and enchanted!

Adults Only! Naked Boys Singing! & My First Time

Naked Boys is Now in it's 7th Smash Year!

Are they really naked?

YES! All 8 guys onstage are fully naked 90% of the show. There are quite a few costumes, but after all…they DO need something to TAKE OFF, now, don't they?

Is this show for gay men only?

Heck NO! The NY Daily News says: "Bound to be a hit with gays, straights and EVERYONE in between!" And they are right! Since the original Los Angeles production, and now all over the world, NAKED BOYS has always attracted an extremely eclectic audience…we've had men, women, senior citizens, mothers, fathers Rabbis, strippers, nudist groups, bachelorette parties galore and people from all walks of life. We welcome everyone!

What is the show about?

NAKED BOYS is a traditional musical revue, in the vein of Vaudeville and high-camp American musical theater. Its only point is to celebrate the splendors of male nudity in comedy, song and dance. Musical numbers range from the screamingly funny (like our sassy opening number "Gratuitous Nudity" or the circumcision-based "Bliss of a Bris") to poignant and moving numbers. There are 15 songs in NAKED BOYS - making this 65-minute tribute to the human male, fly by in a rage of laughter and nudity! Come and see it for yourself - you'll have a great time!M
