Support Live Theatre

Planning a trip to the Big Apple in the near future? Well have I have got news for you. Now is the best time to come to New York and see a show. Did you know that there are currently twenty-one shows running on Broadway as we speak with eighteen more set to open within the next few months. Oh and don't forget Off-Broadway home to over twenty shows as well. That's what makes theatre in New York so exciting. So much variety. Over the years in the city I have probably seen over one hundred and fifty shows. Now in all of them I usually found something I liked. Although I'm also the type of person who loves bad theatre. There's nothing like a great train wreck. I know. I'm weird. Regardless of the show there is nothing in the world like live theatre. That feeling of sitting in a theatre with a bunch of strangers waiting for the magic to begin. Come to New York and experience it for yourself.

Broadway Comes Back

Now before you think I've lost my mind I know that Broadway didn't go anywhere. As is the case every year at this time most Broadway shows post their higher grosses than any other time during the year. Makes sense right? It was Christmas after all. Last week a record ten Broadway shows grossed over a million dollars with Wicked grossing over two million by itself. Pretty impressive don't you think? This week promises to be just as profitable if not better. Who says the economy is bad? Now while seven shows are set to close in the next few weeeks there is hope as there are seventeen new shows set to open in the next few months. Now that is something to be excited about.Support live theatre. There's nothing like it.

The Future Of Broadway

Last night as I was walking home a car drove by with an advertisement for Chicago The Musical. The tag line was "Broadway's Sure Thing". It got me thinking. When it comes to Broadway nowadays the term "Sure Thing" doesn't really apply anymore. Gone are the days when any big musical from London was an automatic hit. Yes Billy Elliot is very popular and was showered with awards but seats are usually available for most performances. In the state that the economy is in people simply can't or won't shell out a $126 to see a show that may or not be any good.Look at something like Memphis. It got great reviews across the board and yet last week they were at 60% capacity. What does that tell you?

Look Broadway isn't going anywhere. There will always be plenty of new shows or revivals coming in each and every season. That will never change. However if Broadway is going to thrive then the price of the ticket either needs to go down or the costs of the productions do. When a show like Spider-Man needs to spend $52 million on a show then something needs to change. It is just one man's opinion. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway Theater Experiences

I had a wonderful conversation with a new customer of ours, Todd from California the other day. Todd had a good look at the Applause Theater Service web site and already knew that he wanted to take his family to see three of the more popular Broadway Shows- Jersey Boys, God of Carnage and Billy Elliot. I set him up with the exact seat locations he wanted.

Just as I was about to say goodbye to Todd, I asked him if there might be anything else I could do for him. He said he needed help getting TV Show Taping admission tickets for some of the more popular shows filmed in New York (his wife loves them). We often get that question from out-of-town clients so I simply double-checked with Google to make sure procuring TV Show tickets had accurate information I could give to Todd. Although, to me, I simply made a few clicks of my computer mouse, Todd was quite happy with the service. Here is the link.

He also wanted to know if there was a "special" place I liked for dinner as he is going to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. I suggested he take her to a place that my wife and I go when we celebrate special occasions. It's a very wonderful Italian restaurant in downtown New York City called Roc Restaurant. Roc is located at 190 Duane Street #A in the Tribeca section of the city. Their local phone number is 212-625-3333. The food and wine are a very special experience. If you think you might enjoy a visit to Roc, you can tell them Applause sent you as they know we tell all our friends and relatives to dine there as well.

If you're planning a trip to see a Broadway Show, I hope you'll allow me or one of the expert Applause ticket agents to help assist you. Not only with tickets but possibly restaurant suggestions, shopping tips or anything else that you might need.

When people purchase tickets for events, they often need suggestions on what to do and where to go that surround the Broadway experience. Let us know how we can help.

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker

What a miserable day outside. It's been raining cats and dogs since early this morning with no end in sight. It's days like these where I find myself struggling to find something to blog about. Don't get me wrong. I love blogging. It allows me to voice my opinion about theatre and quite frankly it makes the day go by a whole lot faster. To be honest with all the shows running and the many ones coming up in the next few months I should never have a problem finding something to write about.Maybe I'm just being lazy.Or maybe I just need a little inspiration. Since I was a kid theatre has always been the one constant in my life. Whenever I'm feeling sad or on days like today when I need a little motivation I know that a Broadway show will do the trick. That's the beauty of live theatre. There's nothing like it. Well what do you know? I guess I found something to write about after all.

Broadway Bound Musical Memphis Announces Theatre

It was announced today that the new musical Memphis is likely to play Broadway's Shubert Theatre come this fall. Although no official announcement has been made it is expected to begin previews on September 23 with an official opening set for October 18. The theatre currently houses the Tony nominated revival Blithe Spirit which is on sale thru July 19th. According to press notes, "Memphis follows the fictionalized life story of young, white radio disc jockey Huey Calhoon growing up in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950’s. An unlikely hero with a great love of the music he hears in the black bars on Beale Street, Huey’s on-air antics and unstoppable enthusiasm for 'race records' creates a new white audience for African-American music. His personal life transcends the race line as well, when he falls in love with a beautiful black singer - with dramatic consequences."

Based on the response it received at La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater I expect the show to do very well. Besides it's about time we had some original shows on Broadway. Until next time theatre fans.

Buy Broadway Theater Tickets Below Face Value- Part II

Obtain the best seats and experience New York's friendliest Broadway ticket service.

You'd be right if you said there are dozens of places to get the best tickets for all the shows playing on Broadway
these days. But an important question after making your search is, which ticket agency should you consider using when making that important decision regarding your tickets?

I could try to "sell you" on using our ticket agency called Applause Theater Service but everyone knows that none of us is interested in any company today telling others how terrific they are, right? But why waste your valuable time today?

I would like to suggest you consider searching for theater tickets on Google, possibly using the show name that you wish to see, like "wicked tickets new york" or "west side story on Broadway". You will get lots of possible answers about getting tickets for Wicked and West Side Story. Then you will need to click on several different sets of "blue links", evaluate the various web sites you click onto and hopefully find the set of tickets you are looking for. It is often at this point that frustration sets in.

Many of the consumers who shop with our company Applause Theater Service in New York, often comment that they like the pictures of our staff sprinkled throughout our web site as well as the local and toll free phone numbers we post in a large fashion. If you shop the Internet often like many of us do, you might notice that a simple thing like a company phone number is often hard to find on a web site? I figured out why I think. I really believe companies don't want to have shoppers call them, hoping for a shopping cart transaction instead of offering "live personal service". In my heart, I don't believe businesses will survive if they don't make an effort to offer personal service. At Applause, its all about our people really. Give us a call and find out when you have a few minutes to talk exactly what good "old fashioned" personal service is.

Almost everyone that calls Applause, mentions that they love the fact that our friendly staff is always pleasant to talk to. In addition it's often said that we are "local Broadway experts". In short, we really know what the Broadway Shows are all about as well as where the best places to sit are in the theater. We often coach shoppers to consider buying tickets that are part of our BELOW FACE VALUE show offerings.

What does it mean to be able to buy seats at BELOW FACE VALUE? It's simple really. Wherever you buy tickets today you will pay a service charge. Even when you shop at the large on-line companies like TicketMaster or for that matter, any licensed ticket agency for Broadway Shows. A simple way to make sure I am speaking the truth is to shop this concept yourself. Be my guest.

Take your time, then consider making a call to Applause Theater Service in New York. Our local phone number is 212-307-7050 or you are welcome to use our toll free line at 800-451-9930, seven days a week. We are open from 9am till 8pm most days.

When you get us on the phone, you can simply ask for the BELOW FACE VALUE available show list. Here you will find a current list of nearly 30 superb Broadway Shows that simply do not usually "sell out" of all their tickets for most performances. It's for these performances whereby Applause can save you a bundle of money. We get a specially discounted price, pass on the savings to you, add on a very reasonable service charge then sell them to the public. And we do so at a price that is BELOW FACE VALUE, which is lower than the regular printed price usually displayed on a ticket. Could you ask for anything more?

Why do we offer this? It's really simple. We feel the price of Broadway is becoming very high and when we bring better pricing, add them to our brand of personal service on Broadway, the end result is really a very positive one for the ticket buyers and for Applause of course. Once we provide our service, we take the liberty of sending you a postcard reminder once in a while (which you can opt out of) and hopefully we get the privilege of being of service to you again in the future. Or maybe one of your friends, relatives or co-workers.

And right after we settle your Broadway ticket arrangements we suggest you check out Restaurant Row, a favorite place in the theater district where you may want to consider dining before the theater. If you like we'll be happy to suggest our favorite spots on Restaurant Row and others in the Broadway area.

So Broadway fans, when you need Broadway Show tickets, we all know there are lots of places to go to. The question is, will it be Applause? We sure hope so, you'll be glad you did. I personally guarantee it.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

South Pacific at Lincoln Center-One of New York's Best Shows

In 2008 South Pacific won 7 Tony Awards for Broadway's Best Revival. Our little ticket agency Applause Theater Service, located in New York City, sold a ton of tickets for this show.

Although it is still popular, many theater-goers have seen it. And you know the old saying, "whatever goes up, eventually comes down". All I mean by this is that South Pacific is a tremendously exciting Broadway Show to see, but for a limited time only, you can obtain seats for discount prices as the first year of bigger than usual demand for new shows is over.

South Pacific is one of New York's landmark shows and this version is only the first revival of an over 50 year old show. Maybe this is why it is so special. The original South Pacific won a Pulitzer Prize, played for over five years and won nine Tony Awards. Songs like "Some Enchanted Evening", "Younger Than Springtime" and "Nothing Like A Dame" are some of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein favorites.

Currently Laura Osnes stars as Ensign Nellie Forbush, taking over the role played by Kelli O'Hara. Ms. O'Hara is having a baby soon and plans on returning to South Pacific in October of 2009. The supporting cast for South Pacific is extremely talented and the creative team features direction by Bartlett Sher, scenic design by Michael Yeargan, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The talent both on stage and creatively are some of the finest the theater industry has ever seen.

Although South Pacific was a complete sold out show in 2008, right now there are a few weekday performances that Applause Theater Service can get you at a discount off the regular prices. The discount is valid for performances on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday matinee and evenings and some Thursdays, subject to availability. The special prices are valid for many performances now through May 21, 2009. If you need to go on the weekend, not to worry friends. Simply call Applause locally in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 and they will provide you with great seats and the most reasonable prices as well. South Pacific is one of my most favorite shows. It is just the type of "old fashioned" production that takes me back to the days when I was first introduced to the "magic" of live Broadway entertainment.

Applause Theater Service is a New York State licensed official ticket agency for South Pacific and all Broadway Shows. If you think you might want to learn about other Broadway Shows, you can check out our up-to-date Broadway Show listing.

Applause's staff love to talk about Broadway theater. They are open 7 days a week and look forward to your call. Don't forget to ask for some of our restaurant suggestions. We love to eat out at some fun spots on Restaurant Row.

We look forward to your call. Enjoy South Pacific or the Broadway Show of your choosing.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Broadway For The Next Generation

(Editor's note.In honor of the opening of Hair I decided to re-post my very first blog. It was written on August 16,2007. My how time flies.)

April 29, 1968. Anybody know what happened on that date? Well like most people I know, myself included, I was not alive in 1968. Heck I didn't even discover musicals until 1984. I mean let's be realistic the last thing a wild 11 year old wants to do is sit in a stuffy old theatre when instead he could be outside playing baseball with his buddies. Then one Easter Sunday that all changed. I remember my 5th Grade music teacher Mrs. Dawson told us about her favorite movie. The Sound of Music. Now at first the idea of watching a story about a nun who takes care of a bunch of kids in Pre-Nazi Germany didn't really interest me. But I figured I might as well give it a shot. Besides since I wasn't doing that hot in music class maybe watching the movie might secure some brownie points with my teacher. As soon as I got home I asked my Mom if we could watch the movie. To this day I still remember her exact words." Do you know how long The Sound of Music is? Three hours. There is now way you are going to be able to sit still for that long." I always like a challenge. Well not only did I watch the whole movie but I was glued to my seat the entire time. I didn't even get up during the commercials. From then on I was hooked. Over the years my love for the theatre has grown even more. Of course after living in New York for the past 15 years my tastes have changed. When I first moved here I would have run to see shows like Crazy For You or 42nd Street. Heck back then I might even have liked Mary Poppins. Not that there is anything wrong with those type of shows. Their just not my cup of tea. My favorite show is Rent. It has been since the first time I saw it back in April 1996. Over the years I have seen it over 20 times. And it never gets old. I still love it for the same reasons. Even after all these years I still cry in the same places. Who says a real man can't show emotion? I remember when Rent first opened people were calling it the "Hair of the 90's". Maybe that's true. Maybe it's not. What it did was give the kids of my generation something to believe in and do something that today in my opinion doesn't happen enough in the theatre. Rent makes you think and above all it makes you care. Not to mention the fact that it showcases music that speaks to me and to so many others. People in the 60's had Hair. In the 90's it was Rent. in 2007 it is Spring Awakening. What will be Broadways next "Rock" musical. Will we have to wait another 10 years to see the next one. I hope not. And by the way the answer to my little Trivia question was "Hair" That's where it all started. By remembering the past it will help make the future even that much brighter.

Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Returns to Broadway

Would you believe me if I told you that I danced with one of the young actresses tonight at the Al Hirschfeld Theater? I also got a hug from another actress at the end of this fantastic revival of HAIR, billed as an "American Tribal Love-Rock Musical". It's true friends. What a wonderful night at the theater.

The original production played at the Public Theater, produced by the incomparable Joseph Papp and the New York Theater Festival in October 1967. Hair then transferred to Broadway in 1968 and opened to rave reviews. The show has played all over the world and was made into a motion picture in 1979. The Public Theater brought Hair back for a limited run in the summer of 2008, as part of its free Shakespeare in the Park season. After garnering rave reviews, it seemed only natural to bring Hair back to Broadway once again. Hair, the revival of one of the greatest rock musicals ever, returns to Broadway and opens to critics reviews on Tuesday March 31, 2009.

Famous recording artists like Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Liza Minelli, Three Dog Night and The Fifth Dimension have recorded popular songs like "Aquarius", Good Morning Starshine", "Hair" and "Let The Sunshine In".

Mr. Papp often produced shows that were dealing with the most controversial issues of the day. The original production of Hair was quite controversial, dealing with the radical representation of that time's "counterculture". One that included the use of different "lingo", style of dress and the hippie lifestyle of that era, as well as the anti-war movement of the 1960's.

Although over 40 years have gone by since this fantastic show first played on Broadway, Hair has got my vote for "Best Revival" at this years Tony Awards that air in June. Let me tell you why.

The cast of this production of Hair sings, dances and creates an unbelievable amount of positive and uplifting energy. Throughout the entire two and one half hour show, this ensemble conveys the sense that they really are a very special "tribe". You not only get the feeling that they are clearly celebrating the hope, joy, love and freedom in their lives but they manage to "include" their audience and take us along with them as well. I was told when I bought my tickets that audience members are asked to dance in the aisle or on stage and I guess it was my lucky night. Dozens of my fellow audience members were asked to join the "love fest" on stage at the Al Hirschfeld Theater tonight. We all had so much fun. You simply need to experience it for yourself if you get a chance.

If you would like to talk about the revival of Hair or possibly obtain seats for the show, you can contact Applause Theater Service in New York. They are a local expert and an officially licensed New York State ticket agency for Hair as well as all the shows playing on Broadway.

I have been fortunate to have seen several hundred shows in my life so far, enjoying most of them. But you know, tonight was something "extra special" for me. I wish everyone involved with the revival of Hair the most success. I can see this fantastic show garnering several Tony Awards. They truly deserve it.

Best wishes to my fellow theater lovers.

Jersey Boys Still Rocks The House in New York City- Get Tickets Today thru Applause Theatre Service

There are many wonderful Broadway Shows to buy tickets for. And amazing live theatre experiences to be enjoyed. If you feel like seeing a show with "feel good" music of the 60's and 70's, coupled with an interesting story line of how 4 local "New Jersey" youngsters made it in the business business-then my friends, let me suggest buying yourself, your family and friends some nice seats for Jersey Boys in New York City.

Jersey Boys tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one of Rock & Roll's most popular bands ever. Being a New Jerseyan myself for over 20 years now and knowing that our state has produced many popular music groups like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes and of course Bon Jovi-I must tell you that Jersey Boys has an intense ability to please all of their live audiences.

Jersey Boys comes with a very interesting story, which is told by each band member in a narration style that allows us to really get a chance to learn exactly how musicians work with all their "passion" to "make it" in a really difficult business. The Four Seasons had many obstacles to climb. Still they managed to keep their desire and passion high while working hard to seek out the best talent, song writing creativeness, work with a top music producer and maybe most importantly-find that "special sound". A sound that Frankie Valli himself often said was "our own special sound". The bands special sound and Frankie Valli's unique singing vocal style was a "high pitched yet sweet voice that I believe helped them sell over 100 million albums.

You'll get to hear some of my personal favorite songs of the 60's and 70's. Songs like "Sherry", "Rag Doll", "Let's Hang On", "My Eyes Adore You" and one of my all-time favorites, "Fallen Angel". All the music is excellent and the actors are extremely talented. I can see it playing on Broadway for many years to come.

If you think Jersey Boys is a show that peeks your interest, you can give the friendly Broadway Ticket Experts at Applause Theatre Service a call right here in New York City on their local phone at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 1-800-451-9930.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone
