Does Broadway Show Street Marketing Work?

Everyday I notice a dozen or so people walking along in Broadway's theater district with billboard like signage on the front and back of them with flyer's in their hands promoting Broadway Shows. Being a ticket seller for Broadway for a long time now, I make it my business to watch the "goings on" in the theater district.

After 32 years of selling Broadway tickets at Applause Ticket Agency (license #71AP1001028), I often wonder if this type of street marketing works. What I witness is that most of the tourists and 9 to 5'er's walking around seem to ignore these folks promoting the shows. Don't we have enough advertising when we turn on our televisions and radios?

Still, one of my colleagues, Todd- seems to think that the folks wearing the signage stand out better than the folks that simply hold show flyer's in front of people's faces. He feels that the signage resembles a billboard and if people are interested in a particular show, they can simply take a flyer. Then possibly go to the theater and purchase tickets. He may have a point when you think about it.

I spend lots of my time marketing my company Applause and every Broadway Show that ever plays in New York City. It is a difficult job sometimes as there seem to be more people and companies selling tickets than ever. I often wonder why many of the shows don't simply approach Applause and some of the other legit ticket sellers in New York City and ask us to sell their shows with some special marketing like e-broadcasts to our database of ticket buyers or sponsor mailings to our travel agency clients.

I guess this type of marketing is helping the shows, otherwise they wouldn't spend the money doing so, right? Still a bright business marketing expert by the name of Seth Godin probably would question whether this type of marketing is simply interruption marketing or whether it makes sense.

What do you think?

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Desire Under The Elms on Broadway-Buy tickets at Below Face Value

A few days ago I had the pleasure of seeing a fantastic play at New York's St. James Theater. The show is called Desire Under The Elms, a Eugene O'Neill piece that was written in 1924. Inspired by a Greek tragedy, Desire Under The Elms is a story about a man in his 70's called Ephraim Cabot who returns to his families farm one day with his much younger wife, Abbie. Abbie falls "head over heels" in love with Ephraim's son, Eben. Needless to say, you will be on the edge of your seat as you witness the tragic consequences that transpire.

Although I usually look forward to attending musicals, I decided to see Desire Under The Elms because one of my favorite actors, Brian Dennehy has a starring role in the show. Mr. Dennehy was terrific in his part as was the outstanding performances of Carla Gugino (Abbie) and Pablo Schreiber (Eben). Robert Falls, one of the Broadway theater's leading directors, does a marvelous job in making you feel for all the characters on stage. Now that I have seen this show, I plan on seeing additional non-musicals in the coming weeks. There's nothing like "live theater", is there?

Desire Under The Elms plays every day except Mondays. Right now tickets are on sale through the summer of 2009 and for Applause Theater Service customers and our Broadway Ticket News blog subscribers, we are offering special discounted seats for this wonderful show for all performances through July 5, 2009.

If you think Desire Under The Elms is a show you might want to see, you can contact Applause Theater Service. They are a locally, licensed New York City Broadway expert. Ask for great seats at "below face value". Buying seats at BELOW FACE VALUE for Desire Under The Elms is easy. Just call Applause at their New York office at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 and tell them Rich Gladstone, The Broadway Ticket Man sent you.

The friendly folks at Applause will set you up for a great Broadway experience at the best prices you can get. You'll have enough left over from the discount you receive to take your loved ones to a superb meal prior to seeing Desire Under The Elms. If you are looking for suggestions on places to eat, you can have a look at Restaurant Row, a great city block of cool restaurants we ourselves frequent before the theater often.

Enjoy Desire Under The Elms or the Broadway Show of your choosing.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

It is now rumored that The 39 Steps may move to another Broadway house by popular demand. It is currently playing to sold out houses each night and is only leaving because there is another show scheduled for the American Airlines Theatre.
Also on the good news front, the critically acclaimed play "August: Osage County" http://www.applause-tickets.com/august-osage-county.asp scheduled as a strictly limited run will not be so limited soon. It is moving from its current house at the Imperial theatre, April 22, right next door to the more intimate Music Box Theatre starting on April 29. The only reason it is leaving the Imperial is that the new Elton John musical "Billy Elliot the Musical", http://www.applause-tickets.com/billy-elliot.asp has that house reserved for a September opening and they need to start rebuilding the theater for this show.

So get your tickets now for the new shows before they disappear and go see the shows closing before it's too late! Last chance to see "Is He Dead?" on Broadway with Applause Theatre Service; Patrick Stewart's Macbeth Headed for Lyceum

I am so saddened that this show could not stick around long enough to find an audience. "Is He Dead?" unfortunately is closing this Sunday March 9th.

If you need some BIG Laughs to carry you out of the cold miserable Winter and into the warmth of Spring, RUN to see this hilarious show! It's not to be missed! I still can offer some Applause Insider Deals up to the final matinee performance this Sunday at 3pm. What an amazing ensemble cast, lead by the very funny and talented Tony award winner Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Wicked).

It is absolutely one of the best shows I've seen in a couple of years here on Broadway. I haven't laughed so hard in a long, long time!

But the Lyceum Theatre will quickly get a new tenant: Rupert Goold's production of "Macbeth" now in a sold-out run at BAM with Patrick Stewart in the title role, will play a limited run at the theater from March 28 to May 24, with an official opening night set for April 8. Tickets will go on sale Monday March 10.

You Can Trust The Broadway Ticket Experts At Applause in New York City

I like to read about business. In fact "business" has been kind of like a hobby for me since we started our own "personal theatre ticket service", Applause Theatre and Entertainment Service Inc. http://www.applause-tickets.com/ over 21 years ago with my friend and partner Bill Stolting. Bill and I have shared lots of great times together over the years, both personal and business.

We were sitting around Bill's office several times over the past few months or so, just talking about how the "ticket business" has changed. Indeed it has. We used to sit and take phone orders never really imagining there would be an Internet one day that could "send us the business". We used to "hand write" our customer ticket requests on an index size work order and then manually carry out all the business functions we needed to make sure the customer received their tickets and then finally bill out a credit card so we could get paid. It seemed like the phone call was easy and fast and the process took much longer. This sort of reminds me of my mom saying "it seems to take quite a while to make dinner yet a much shorter time to consume the meal".

Although Bill and I were fortunate enough to have our small ticket company automated a few years back we have been thinking about some things that we could tell consumers that separates us from the hundreds of other ticket companies. Can you believe there are hundreds of mostly small mom and pop like companies that provide a theater ticket service to companies and consumers alike?

So what's the biggest difference when contacting Applause Theatre Service in New York City? It's not really just the "ticket" right? Everyone sells tickets, everyone provides a service. Some services are really good and some are not right?

At Applause Theatre Service, one of the things we think we do "the best" and that no one other service can in our expert opinion, is really quite simple when you think about it. We would agree that we have tickets and many others do also, some dates and shows are little better seating or maybe not quite as good as the seating that we have. More or less, we can get tickets to Broadway Shows www.applause-tickets.com/broadway.asp and "the competition" can as well.

The three things we kept thinking about when Bill and I chatted these last few months about "the Applause difference", have nothing to do with tickets. It has to do with:

1. Amazing People-we feel our staff is truly the best, thinking all about what it is the customer is looking for, their needs and feelings. Have a peek at our team http://www.applause-tickets.com/ . Our friendly group of Broadway Experts wants to fulfill customer needs, not just "make a sale". We feel the greatest compliment you could possibly give us after we provide our service is a "referral" of a family member, friend or maybe even a co-worker.

2. Great Service-sure I would say our service is "the best", so would everyone else right? Still if you contact us by phone, email, chat line, whichever method one is comfortable with, we have confidence that people will be able to "see the difference" between Applause and "the other guys".

3. Trust-this little word "trust" is what I keep reading in all those business books I mentioned I have read in the past year or two. Of course the only way consumers and corporate ticket buyers would really know if they can "trust" Applause or any other ticket company is quite simple. Just pickup the phone and give us a call in New York on our toll free line at 800-451-9930 or locally at 212-307-7050. Experience our brand of customer service first hand and you'll see what I mean.

Bill and I don't have visions of becoming the biggest ticket company in the world, we simply want to keep moving forward in our work lives and keep our small company http://www.applause-tickets.com/ running smoothly for the long term. Since tickets are really just a commodity, the consumer today can simply click on dozens of web sites and shop around for the best price right? And even after doing all this "clicking and price shopping", will they get the best deal, service and advice when making a purchase? The customer should know during the phone conversation if they can "trust" the company they are doing business with.

Did you ever walk into a store that was a mom and pop business and wonder how they still exist with all the large big box discount retailers out there? My guess is that maybe they offer the same 3 items above to their customers, AMAZING PEOPLE, GREAT SERVICE and TRUST.

Why take a chance? Talk with our people. Let us help you find the best tickets for any Broadway Show. And let us give you the service you should expect when making a Broadway Show purchase.

The Farnsworth Invention To Close On March 2

What a shame. Words cannot describe how much I loved this show. I think it's sad that an amazing show like this can't find an audience. But in this day and age of "Big" musicals it's not easy for a play like this to have a long run. Thankfully the stagehand's strike didn't last longer, or this show, not to mention many other new plays might never have opened. But we have to look on the bright side I guess. There are still plenty of plays running on Broadway too see. Best of all we sell all of them and at an incredible savings. Here is a list of the plays currently running on Broadway, plus a few that are scheduled to open in the coming months.

39 Steps, The
August: Osage County
Bronx Tale, A
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Come Back, Little Sheba
Homecoming, The
Is He Dead?
November
Rock 'n' Roll
Seafarer, The
Thurgood
Top Girls

I can't remember a time where there have been so many new and exciting plays on Broadway. Can you?

Get Tickets To See Grease On Broadway Thru Applause Theatre Service

Well here we are over 35 years later and Grease is still the word. On Broadway that is. Following the highly rated reality show "You're The One That I Want" on NBC last year, Grease opened on Broadway last summer to the glee of fans and baby boomers alike. Since I wasn't alive when the show first opened on Broadway my first experince like most was seeing the movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. To this day it remains a classic not to mention the highest grossing movie musical in history. Now since the most recent revival only closed less than ten years ago I questioned whether it was too soon for another one. In this day and age when all we hear about is war and all the problems in the world it's nice to have shows like Grease that help us forget and put a smile on our face. Isn't that what theatre is all about? I think so. So forget about what the critics say and take a trip back to the 1950's with the gang at Rydell High.

Give us a call at 1-800-451-9930 or 212-307-7050, or visit us on the web at http://www.applause-tickets.com/.

Applause's Broadway Ticket Business is Amazing for the usual Off Peak Winter Season in New York City

I don't know if it was the Broadway Stagehands strike this past November of 2007 or that the economy is not really in the "bad way" we all hear the newscasters say all the time. But we are busier than ever this winter season for Broadway Show ticket sales.

My first thought was maybe the Broadway strike a few months ago led to a "pent up demand" from the tens of thousands of people that were not able to see a show, but have decided to see one this winter. Some people I guess living near New York City have done this but we are seeing lots of "out-of-towner" ticket buying for Broadway Shows this past January of 2008 so maybe it has something having to do with the Applause Insider Broadway Show ticket deals that Applause has been marketing. You can easily have a look for yourselves at www.applause-tickets.com/insider-deals.asp . We usually find over 20 top Broadway Shows where we can save you so much money, it'll pay for dinner at a fairly nice restaurant before the show you choose.

We know the public is bombarded by dozens of different marketing messages everyday, especially for something like Broadway. But, and here's the main difference between all those Broadway marketing messages and how Applause does business.

The friendly staff at Applause http://www.applause-tickets.com/ prides itself on knowing all the great deals every Broadway Show offers each and every day of the year. With very few exceptions, they can tell you exactly which shows have the best seats for the best prices and the best day or night you may want to attend your favorite theatre production.

Broadway, like most businesses wants to sell full price tickets at the highest possible price. But there is a reality to being able to really be able to sell all the seats at the highest price. It really doesn't happen all the time. Theatres sell High, Medium and Low prices just like most other businesses right?

When you are in the market to see a Broadway Show, there are hundreds of ticket sources you can use. Just go to Google and you'll see what I mean. Here's the problem with that. You go to Google, do a search then you get hundreds of different options of who to ask for help in buying tickets. Now you get more confused than ever right?

I have a great solution for you. Simply trust the good people at Applause Theatre and Entertainment Service in New York http://www.applause-tickets.com/ . The people in the picture have been running this company for years now. There is no one better at giving the most "truthful answers to any question the theatre-going public can come up with". The Applause staff of Broadway ticket experts will let you know what are the best seats, best prices and especially what are the current "insider Broadway Show deals", which might be available for the time frame you wish to see a show. If you are in town for a day, two or maybe more, simply give Applause the time period and they will seek out the best seats at the best prices for the shows you want to see.

When you need tickets for Broadway, give the Applause Broadway Experts a call at 212-307-7050 or 1-800-451-9930, they are open 7 days a week and will take excellent care of your ticket needs.

Last Chance! Closing Soon! Applause Theatre Service has Great Insider Deals for A Bronx Tale and Rock 'N' Roll

Brush up on your “door test” skills and take a date to A Bronx Tale …"C, The saddest thing in this world is wasted talent.", and Wasted chances to take advantage of these Great Deals!

Going to the theater in this town is always an incredibly enlightening and emotional experience for me and fortunately that is one of the great perks about working for Applause Theatre Service, I get to see a lot of theater! Perhaps it’s the bright lights of Broadway that still excites the kid within me, or perhaps the storyteller peeking out from behind the writer, urging me to tell my story. Whatever it is, it's always present, tugging at my sleeve. That's why I love this show so much I guess. He was able to tell this compelling almost life altering story to most who see it and I envy that.

A Bronx Tale” starring Chazz (Calogero) Palminteri is a tale of coming of age, a “West Side Story” if you will, for Italians. Of course, unlike “West Side Story”…“A Bronx Tale” in truth is a very personnel story of that kid, who spoke of “wasted talent” and of the tug of war between the blurred lines of good and evil. Anyway, it's an unforgettable night of theater! So get tickets now before the show closes on Sunday February 24th, and mention the Applause Insider rate for some great savings!
This show has already extended for the last time because "A Catered Affair" is opening at the Walter Kerr starring Harvey Fierstein on March 25th. You can begin purchasing tickets for this show on 2/17.

This is also your last chance to catch Tom Stoppards critically acclaimed Play "Rock 'N' Roll" . The limited engagement of Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll will play its final performance at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre March 9; there will be No Extension!
If you like great smart intelligent theater with terrific music, You'll Love this intense show! The production features a soundtrack that boasts some of rock 'n' roll's most influential artists, including John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Plastic People of the Universe, Velvet Underground, the Grateful Dead, U2 and the Beach Boys.
Incredible savings can still be had by mentioning the Applause Theatre Service Insider special deals.

Save This Winter On The Farnsworth Invention

The Farnsworth Invention
It’s 1929. Two ambitious visionaries race against each other to invent a device called “television.” Separated by two thousand miles, each knows that if he stops working, even for a moment, the other will gain the edge. Who will unlock the key to the greatest innovation of the 20th century: the ruthless media mogul, or the self-taught Idaho farm boy? I saw this show last November in previews, and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable evenings I have spent in the theatre in a long time. I only wish that the run was a little longer. Unfortunately this amazing show is only playing thru March 16th. But if you call Applause Theatre Service we can get you a special "Inside Deal" thru March 9th. So buy your tickets now to the show that Kurt Loder of MTV called, "The most exciting new show on Broadway. A rousing theatrical experience."

Applause Theatre Service in New York-The Broadway Show Experts Like To Talk

We live in a time whereby many companies want you to book their products electronically (in my opinion it's because they are often lazy and don't want to devote live people to speak to potential customers). Not to mention, they save a ton of money and don't have to pay people right? The airline and hotel industries are notorious for not having enough "live help". You know how you often have to "press 1 or press 2, etc. And then you have to speak at a certain level or the automated system doesn't understand you. You know how frustrating that can be.

Applause Theatre and Entertainment Service Inc. of New York City, New York, prides themselves on running a company and promoting their "potential customers should call and talk to us". Applause http://www.applause-tickets.com/ has over 30 years of experience providing a very high level of service when it comes to securing Broadway Show tickets.

You can click here for a complete list of current Broadway Shows www.applause-tickets.com/broadway.asp and if you "want to talk with us" live simply click the RED TELEPHONE in the upper right hand corner and we would be happy to "chat with you live".

For those shoppers that prefer to put a "voice with a face" you can click on our home page at http://www.applause-tickets.com/ . That's our staff right on the front. You can simply pick up the phone and call us at 212-307-7050 or 1-800-451-9930 and ask for Todd, Teresa, Carol, Claudia, Erik, Jay, Rich, Bill or Billy. We love to talk on the phone (taking as much time as you need) as well as chat on the RED PHONE.

When your plans include a Broadway show, you can count on the staff at Applause to be very helpful. We look forward to speaking with you, "on the phone or on the web site".

Applause Theatre Service in New York-Real People You Can Trust to get the Best Broadway Tickets

Right now the January through March 2008 period in New York is usually what us Broadway industry insider's call "slow season". I've been saying that for over 30 years now.

Maybe it is "slow season" for Broadway but I could swear that we aren't really "slow" these days. Maybe the traveling public and the theatre-going public has really started taking advantage of cheaper airfares, discount hotel rooms and the "insider prices" that Applause Theatre Service has uncovered lately.

Sure we have access to the best seats in the house. They are fairly costly but you do get to sit front and center in the theatre of course. Most people want to sit in the front and center but cannot afford the price tag. As we talk with people more and more and find out how many shows they want to see, we almost always can suggest shows during this "off peak" time of year that will save the average theatre-goer "a bundle" of money.

If you get a chance, you may want to check out Applause's "insider deals" for 23 Broadway Shows as of this writing. You can click on www.applause-tickets.com/insider-deals.asp , simply go to the show you are interested in, click on the page, get a description of the show, then if you like, get yourself the best Broadway ticket deals around.

Some of the shows are not available on the "insider ticket deals". This usually applies to the most popular selling shows like Wicked http://www.applause-tickets.com/ or Jersey Boys www.applause-tickets.com/jersey-boys.asp or Disney's latest hit Broadway Show called The Little Mermaid www.applause-tickets.com/little-mermaid.asp . But not to worry as Applause can get "reasonably priced" tickets to these popular shows as well so it doesn't cost you "an arm and a leg".

In fact, our customers are so happy with the savings we bring to them (and great seats too), that they often choose to spend the savings on a restaurant meal or two at places they sometimes might not usually go. You know, maybe something a little more upscale after savings all that money on the ticket deals. Choose a restaurant on your own or you may want to try our very own Todd Freeman's dining suggestions at www.applause-tickets.com/todds-dining.asp . Saving money is just one thing, wait till you try the superb professional manner in which the Applause Staff http://www.applause-tickets.com/ will treat you.

When your plans include Broadway, we hope you will call upon the "real people you can trust" to get you the best seats for the best shows at the best prices.. See a Broadway show today. You'll be glad you did.

A Catered Affair Sweeps San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards and you can get your tickets now with Applause Theatre Service

“A CATERED AFFAIR”, http://www.applause-tickets.com/catered-affair.asp SWEEPS SAN DIEGO THEATRE CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS. THE NEW HARVEY FIERSTEIN / JOHN BUCCHINO MUSICAL RECEIVES 7 AWARDS INCLUDING; OUTSTANDING NEW
MUSICAL FOR PRE-BROADWAY OLD GLOBE RUN**FAITH PRINCE, TOM WOPAT ALSO RECEIVE TOP HONORS**PERFORMANCES BEGIN MARCH 25, 2008, ON BROADWAY New York, NY –

The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards were announced at a West Coast ceremony last night and A Catered Affair, the new musical with book by four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, score by John Bucchino and directed by Tony Award-winner John Doyle, was the big winner with 7 awards, including Outstanding New Musical. The SDTCC awards honor excellence during the theatrical year in San Diego; A Catered Affair premiered at The Old Globe on September 30, 2007, inaugurating the theater’s 2007-8 Season. The musical’s stars, Faith Prince and Tom Wopat, received Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Outstanding Actor in a Musical awards. The show’s score (John Bucchino), direction (John Doyle), lighting (Brian MacDevitt) and orchestrations (Don Sebesky) were also honored. The complete list of awards includes:

Outstanding New Musical

Outstanding Score – John Bucchino

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical – Faith Prince

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical – Tom Wopat

Outstanding Direction – John Doyle

Outstanding Lighting – Brian MacDevitt

Outstanding Orchestrations – Don Sebesky

When A Catered Affair opened in its pre-Broadway run, Anne Marie Welsh of The San Diego Union-Tribune declared, “What makes A Catered Affair different isn’t its size, but authenticity. That rare quality flows from Fierstein’s book, Doyle’s direction, the performances and, most importantly, Bucchino’s music; all spring from a similar vision and feel seamlessly unified.” She added, “A Catered Affair defies the lowest-common-denominator taste for “American Idol”-style belting, but also moves beyond the usual expectations for bouncy, brashly upbeat storytelling. . . The show defies popular expectation without becoming elitist or highbrow.”

A Catered Affair was also named one of the year’s best by The San Diego Union-Tribune, North County Times and San Diego Reader.**A Catered Affair begins performances on Broadway on March 25 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street) with opening night set for April 17.

The production stars Tony Award-winner Prince as ‘Aggie Hurley,’ the mother- of-the-bride, Tony Award-nominee Wopat as 'Tom Hurley,' the father-of-the-bride, Harvey Fierstein as ‘Winston,’ the uncle-of-the-bride, Leslie Kritzer as 'Jane Hurley,' the bride-to-be and Matt Cavenaugh as ‘Ralph Halloran,’ the groom-to-be.

A Catered Affair, Broadway's newest musical, asks the question that inevitably faces every mother and daughter: Whose wedding is it anyway? One family’s dilemma is now a funny, poignant and oh, so human show of love and disaffection. Set in the Bronx of 1953, this musical reveals a couple strained to their limits as they plan their only daughter's wedding. Harvey Fierstein’s book and John Bucchino’s score explore both our need for love and the true meaning of family.
