David Hyde Pierce Returns to Broadway and Not TV this Spring in Accent on Youth!
I just read an article recently about David Hyde Pierce. He said that while he was singing and dancing on Broadway, producers were trying to woo him back to prime-time TV. "People have approached me about going back to TV," he said. "Basically, I said to them, 'I'm happy to look at scripts, but I don't want to go back to television.'"
At age 49, Pierce wants to do more theater! Well hurray for us!
"Curtains," the musical whodunit he starred in and won a Tony Award for, ran for 16-months. Now this spring, he returns to Broadway in a revival of the 1934 comedy "Accent on Youth" after taking some time off to rest for awhile. Well deserved I might add, going from Spamalot to Curtains. That's a heck of run doing 8 shows a week! What vitamins is he taking?!
Charles Kimbrough will star opposite David Hyde Pierce in Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Samson Raphaelson's Accent on Youth, to be directed by Daniel Sullivan, which will play Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, beginning on April 7, with an official opening on April 29.
In the play, successful playwright Stephen Gaye (Pierce) is about to abandon his latest script, when his young secretary offers him new inspiration. With her as his muse, he stages the show on Broadway, only to learn, to his dismay, that the show's young leading man is being inspired by her too. Kimbrough will play the role of Gaye's butler, Flogdell.

Tony Award Winner Curtains Set To Close On June 29
Curtains, the musical comedy whodunit from composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, and writers Peter Stone and Rupert Holmes, will play its final performance on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on June 29 at 3 PM.The musical Curtains stars 2007 Tony Award winner and four-time Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce as Lieutenant Frank Cioffi and Tony and Emmy Award winner Debra Monk as producer Carmen Bernstein. According to the shows press release Curtains "unfolds backstage at Boston's Colonial Theatre in 1959, where a new musical could be a Broadway smash, were it not for the presence of its talent-free leading lady. When the hapless star dies on opening night during her curtain call, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi (David Hyde Pierce) arrives on the scene to conduct an investigation. But the lure of the theatre proves irresistible and after an unexpected romance blooms for the stage-struck detective, he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit, as he is in solving the murder."
I myself loved this charming show within a show musical, not to mention that this is the last collaboration between the Tony Award songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. Get your Curtains tickets now. You've only got until June 29th.
