Hairspray:Five Years and Counting

Being in the industry that we are in, we are often invited to view a sneak peak at the upcoming Broadway shows. This was the case in August 2002 when I received an invitation to see one of the final dress rehearsals of Hairspray prior to its first preview. As is the case with a new show, they generally go through a three to four week preview period. That way they can work out any kinks before the official opening.

From the moment the curtain rose and the first chords of “Good Morning Baltimore” began I was in heaven. I could not believe that this was just a dress rehearsal. Well as you all know Hairspray went on to become one of the biggest hits of the season and the winner of 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Five years later it continues to play to sold out crowds in both New York and around the world.

Live theatre. There’s nothing like it!
