Fela! Is the beautifully told story of one man’s controversial life as a musician, composer, social pioneer, and political activist. Fela Anikulapo Kuti was born in Nigeria and became known later in life for his struggles against the tyrannies of government. This show is an ode to his more creative side – the genius that changed the musical industry forever. Fela was the creator of a special blend of jazz, funk, and African rhythm and harmonies that he called “Afro-beat”. He was easily the most popular and innovative musician to emerge from Nigeria and the entire African Continent in the 1970’s. His music is the heartbeat of this beautiful and spirited Fela! Broadway show.

The show itself is based on a book by Jim Lewis and Tony award winner Bill T. Jones who also helms the productions’ choreography and directing. The design team is comprised of Broadway veterans Marina Draghici, Rob Wierzel, Peter Negrini and Rob Kaplowitz. Fela’s own music is performed by Antibalas and other members of the New York Afrobeat community. If you enjoy shows that are full of audience interactions, Fela! Is for you.
