Fences is the Story of One Man's Love and Failure

Drama
They say that youth is wasted on the young. In Troy Maxson’s case, he believes this wholeheartedly. Set in 1950’s Philadelphia, Troy used to be a star baseball player in the Negro League. Years later, he is a trash man in Philadelphia with a family that he fears is ashamed of him. In reality, Troy is ashamed of himself. He struggles on a daily basis with the youthful dreams that were never realized and a body that just won’t do what his mind tells it to.

Troy is also dealing with his teenage son who is on the road to becoming a football star. His son is headstrong and angry at the world and especially Troy. Troy is ashamed of his own jealousy towards his son’s imminent success in a world of sports that he could never fully conquer. Eventually, it is revealed that at one time, Troy had a son with his mistress. Troy finds out that the woman is now dead and brings home his illegitimate son to raise as part of his family. Though his family rebels against him, Troy feels that he is doing the right thing and plans to do all the things with his new son that he failed to do with his last.

Ultimately, Fences is the story of a man who fails to be perfect. He couldn’t make it as an athlete and he has let it haunt him for the rest of his life. His own sense of failure affects the way he treats his family. Despite all of this, he is a good man and loves his sons and wife dearly.
