When Hair debuted on Broadway in 1968, it caused a sensation. Some people were absolutely appalled at the rock n roll music, interracial cast, and on stage drug use. Others were thrilled that someone had finally taken a generation’s feelings and frustrations and made them into a musical that would reach out to a broad audience. Today, Hair Broadway Show is still a controversial show. It features nudity and profane language which can be offensive to some people. It is, however, one of the most defining shows in Broadway history and its return to New York City is a treat for anyone who gets to see it.

Hair was the world’s first rock musical. James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot decided that they were sick of seeing shows that weren’t applicable to the problems that they felt around them at that moment in time. The Vietnam War was raging on and people were raging just as hard in protest against it. The hippie counter culture and subsequent sexual revolution of the 1960’s was something that Conservative America had never seen before. An entire generation stepped up in the 1960’s and decided that they were going to assert themselves in the loudest, most visible way possible. Hair is an ode to this generation – the “Greatest Generation”.

Besides its political and cultural implications, Hair is a great story. It tells the story of the “Tribe”, a group of hippies living in New York City and doing everything in their power to fight against the Vietnam War. The members of the Tribe love and rage and are ultimately touching characters. Though the show is based in the 1960’s, it has not lost any of its daring allure on today’s Broadway theater goers.
