A Little Night Music first opened on Broadway in 1973 to rave reviews. The musical went on to win multiple Tony Awards including Best Musical under the inspired direction of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is a brilliant example of film adaptation to the Broadway stage. The show originally debuted to audiences who couldn't get enough of its wildly romantic and passionate notions of love and relationships. It was a re-released on Broadway in January of 1999 to a new generation who equally appreciated the show's musical and thematic value. Today's show features Tony Award winners and Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch as Desiree Armfeldt and Madame Armfedlt. They are backed by an all star cast.
A Little Night Music is set in a country house in turn of the century Sweden. Again but still wildly beautiful actress Desiree Armfeldt is recently tired of her blustering soldier lover. She decides to pursue an old flame, a now married lawyer who happens to be equally tired of his persistently virginal child bride. What ensues is hilarious at times, romantic and passionate at others. Ultimately, it is about the endless possibilities of love and the sometimes dramatic explosion of emotions and relationships.
A Little Night Music features some of Stephen Sondheim's best known work including "Send In the Clowns". The show's themes are continually and masterfully set to beautiful music throughout the show.
