Next To Normal is Anything But

Musical
Next To Normal is one of the most celebrated musicals in recent Broadway history. Nominated for 11 Tony awards in 2009 including Best Musical, it went on to win for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. Before debuting on Broadway, it received several workshop performances and won numerous awards. Perhaps its biggest honor was winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010, making it only the eighth musical in history to have won the prize.

So what makes Next to Normal so special? The first thing it has going for it is that it is directed by Michael Greif, the celebrated and brilliant director of Broadway’s Rent. Secondly, Next To Normal Broadway Show pushes and redefines the boundaries of Broadway Musicals as a genre. Its subject matter is not light. In fact, it is actually dark and serious and all too familiar for many people. The decision to deal with such issues as mental illness and family discord through song was a risk that ultimately paid off.

The Goodman family has a secret: it is a seemingly perfect and boring suburban family from the outside but in reality, it is run by a mother who suffers from debilitating bi-polar disorder. Undiagnosed for 16 years, Diana Goodman is a mother who tried to do everything right for her family but couldn’t due to her incredible emotional swings and hallucinations. Her diagnosis with bipolar disorder and ensuing medication takes its toll on her husband who struggles with his own depression and daughter who is trying to fit in as a normal teenager as her family seemingly falls apart.

The subject matter is heavy and can be sad at times but Next To Normal is ultimately a brilliant production. Yes, it is serious and yes, it is sad but it is also very real. Anyone who has ever struggled to be strong for loved ones or who has a family that just isn’t quite perfect will relate to this touching musical.
