The Scottsboro Boys is the true story of nine young black men falsely accused of raping two young white women in Alabama in 1931. You might think that such a serious subject wouldn't translate well into a musical but you would be wrong.

The brilliance of the Scottsboro Boys is the combination of very heavy and dark subject matter with a razzle-dazzle approach to its Broadway production. The composer, lyrical team of Kander and Ebb are no virgins in the creation of this type of show. Both Cabaret and The Kiss of the Spider Woman are examples of depressing stories that became beloved (even uplifting) musicals on stage. They have performed their magic again with The Scottsboro Boys by telling the story of those nine young men through a Minstral show.

The story of the nine accused men, their trials, initial convictions of death sentences, and eventual overturned verdicts after loud Northern protest, manages to be uplifting without being overtly “feel good". Theatrical devices like tap dancing and shadow theater make this a classic musical while the character development leads the audience to relate to the injustice felt by those men on a deeply personal level. You will laugh, dance, and cry during this show – just as you might at a real life Minstral show.
