South Pacific is a Broadway Masterpiece
Musical
When South Pacific debuted in 1949, it was the winner of ten Tony Awards and an instant sensation. Adapted for stage by the genius duo of Broadway, Rodgers and Hammerstein, South Pacific was originally a novel by James A. Michener about racism in the South Pacific during World War II. The musical tells the story of a young and naïve U.S. Navy nurse from Arkansas. Stationed on a small island in the South Pacific during World War II, Nellie falls quickly in love with a French plantation owner named Emile de Becque.
Unfortunately, everything is not rainbows and sunshine for this young couple. A war is going on and soldiers stationed on the island are getting restless due to lack of action and lack of women. They begin to antagonize other French plantation owners. Meanwhile, a young American officer named Lieutenant Joe Cable arrives from the mainland with a secret mission to carry out and he quickly falls in love with a local islander. Both Cable and Nellie spend time during South Pacific struggling with their own prejudices and the prejudices of others around them. They are forced to make a decision between what is popular and what their hearts really want.
