Lion King Musical Plot
The Lion King musical plot is similar to the Disney movie version. Visually, they are very different. The show begins at Pride Rock where Rafiki the Baboon has gathered all of the animals in the Pride Lands kingdom. King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi emerge with their newly born son, Simba, and proclaim that he will be the future lion king. Nearly everyone is overjoyed at the news. The only person who isn’t excited is Mufasa’s outcast of a brother, Scar, who had hoped to gain the throne for himself once Mufasa dies. As Simba gets older, he starts exploring his future kingdom more and more with his best friend Nala. At one point, he learns a lesson about danger when he and Nala have to be rescued from some hyenas by his father.
Eventually, Scar’s greed and cruelty comes to the surface when he uses Simba as bait to lure Mufasa to his death. The hyenas chase Simba out of the kingdom and leave him for dead in the desert. He is saved by a silly meerkat (Timon) and warthog (Pumbaa) and begins to live the easy life in a jungle oasis far from home. With both Mufasa and Simba believed to be dead, Scar takes over the throne as king of the Pride Lands. Under his rule, the kingdom suffers and everyone is unhappy. Eventually, the conditions become so bad that Simba’s old friend Nala goes looking for food and finds Simba in his jungle oasis. She is overjoyed that the rightful king is still alive and tries to convince him to come home. His guilt over his father’s death causes him to hesitate at first but eventually he goes home with Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa to challenge his uncle for his place as king. After a battle of lions vs. hyenas and Simba vs. Scar, Simba and the rest of the lions emerge victorious and Simba rightfully claims his place as King.
