They meet each other as they are both trying to escape their current lives and instantly fall in love. New York at that time was full of racism and class tension and these tense feelings are undercurrents throughout the dramatic show. As Tony and Maria fall further in love, violence between their gangs and families escalates and innocent lives are lost in the crossfire.

Ultimately, West Side Story is about undying love and overcoming the odds. Despite their respective families and gangs feelings about their relationship, Tony and Maria’s feelings and devotion to each other manages to endure and blossom.
