Top Shows To Check Out This Autumn

That’s right, theatre fans, now is the best time to see some of Broadway’s most highly anticipated new shows and revivals. Here are just a few.

Ragtime

Winner of four 1998 Tony Awards including Best Book and Score and based on E. L. Doctorow’s 1975 award winning novel, Ragtime is returning to the Great White Way following its critically acclaimed run last year at New York’s City Center.

Led by Broadway favorites Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy, and Tony Award winner Brandon Uranowitz, and written by Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, and Terrance McNally, this beloved musical opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on October 16 where it is currently scheduled to play thru January 4, 2026.

As a fan of both the original and the 2009 revival, I can’t wait for this production. Here’s hoping the third time is even better

Chess

What’s that you say? Two highly anticipated revivals set to open a month apart from each other? That’s Broadway for you.

The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1988 began previews at its original home, the Imperial Theatre on October 15, with opening night scheduled for November 16.

Featuring a score by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA, Mamma Mia), a new book by Emmy winner Danny Strong, and direction by Tony Award winner, and starring Lea Michele (Glee), Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge), and Nicholas Christopher, Chess is one show you do not want to miss.

Beetlejuice

One of the biggest surprises in my decades of theatre going was the 2019 production of Beetlejuice. Having never seen the movie I wasn’t sure what to expect. I just knew that it would probably be an interesting night in the theatre.

Cut to a month or so later and I was about to view this hysterical musical for my fourth time. I guess you could say that I enjoyed it!

Based on the hit 1988 film of the same name, the show’s original run was cut short by the pandemic but thankfully made its triumphant a couple of years later where it ran for an additional nine months.

Now here we are almost three years later, and the show is set to return once again with previews beginning at the Palace Theatre on October 8 for a limited run thru January 3, 2026. Something tells me that number five is just around the corner.

Rob Lake Magic with Special Guests The Muppets

Full disclosure. I love magic. I also love The Muppets. So, you can imagine how excited I was when this new show was announced over the Summer.

The show, which is set to begin previews at The Broadhurst Theatre on October 28, is scheduled to open on November 6 for a twelve-week engagement.

Now for those of you that may not be familiar with Rob Lake, he like many magicians of the last decade got his start on American’s Got Talent during Season 13 in 2018. Since then, he has continued to bring his talents to venues and audiences around the world before making his eagerly awaited Broadway debut alongside everyone’s favorite puppets.

The 2025 Tony nominations have been announced, honoring the best of the 2024–2025 Broadway season.

Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce will announced this year's nominees for Broadway's top honors. Watch the complete announcement above.

Winners will be named at the June 8 Tony Awards ceremony, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall beginning at 8 PM ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. Wicked film star and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo is set to host the evening.

Broadway’s “Left on Tenth”-Lights Up the James Earl Jones Theatre

In addition to the two main stars, Kate MacCluggage (Are you There God? It’s Me, Margaret) and Peter Francis James (Ziegfield, Funny Girl) round out this great production. These two seasoned actors are extremely talented.

Left On Tenth is directed by the very talented Broadway veteran, Susan Stroman. Ms. Stroman has been the recipient of five Tony Awards during her storied career.

Celeste and I have seen about a dozen shows so far this year and Left on Tenth is clearly one of our favorites. This wonderful, new romantic comedy along with some very serious life challenges thrown in, is one just about everyone can relate to.

I hope you’ll consider treating yourself and someone you care about and buy some tickets for this great new show. With a running time of only one hour and 40 minutes and no intermission, even the timing is perfect.

Home is Coming to Broadway

The first entry of the 2024-2025 Broadway season is Home . Premiering in 1979 at the Negro Ensemble Company before transferring to Broadway the following year, is set to open at the newly renamed Todd Haimes Theatre in June with previews scheduled to begin on May 17.

Written by Samm-Art Williams and directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, A Soldier’s Play), Home is set in North Carolina during the height of the Vietnam War, and focuses on farmland owner Cephus Miles who flees his small town after serving time for being a draft evader, and his slow but tragic dive into the world of drugs and prostitution before his return to North Carolina in search of the life he always wanted. Well, I’m sold.

Hell’s Kitchen Previews on Broadway March 28

Fresh off a critically acclaimed sold out production last year at New York’s famed Public Theater, is Hell’s Kitchen .

Based on the life of Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Alicia Keys, the show is scheduled to begin previews at the historic Shubert Theatre on March 28, with opening night scheduled for April 20.

Directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Grief and featuring music and lyrics by Ms. Keys and a book by Kristoffer Diaz, Hell’s Kitchen is loosely based on Key’s childhood spent living in Hell’s Kitchen’s- Manhattan Plaza.

A 46-floor building known for offering federally subsidized housing for both artists, as well as other neighborhood residents and the elderly. Not only am I a huge fan of Alica Keys, but I am a sucker for a good bio, jukebox musical. Here’s hoping Hell’s Kitchen is a hit.

Patriots Coming to Broadway in April

Written by Tony Award winner Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Audience) and directed by Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold, (Ink, King Lear) is Patriots .

The show which first premiered at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End in 2023, stars Tony Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg as billionaire Russian businessman Boris Berezofsky during the Soviet Union’s sharp decline and the unexpected rise of Boris Yeltsin.

Previews for the twelve-week limited engagement is set to begin previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on April 1 with opening night scheduled for April 22. I expect Patriots to be a big Tony contender this Spring.

The Great Gatsby Coming to Broadway April 25th

Just like with fellow new musical, The Notebook, I have never read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby or seen any of its numerous film or television adaptations.

I am, however, looking forward to seeing this new take on the classic love story mostly in part due to the show’s two stars. Tony Award nominees Jeremy Jordan (Newsies, Bonnie and Clyde) and Eva Noblezada (Hadestown, Miss Saigon) as millionaire Jay Gatsby and his former paramour Daisy Buchanan.

The Great Gatsby premiered last year at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, features music and lyrics by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen and a book by Kait Kerrigan. Directed by Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), The Great Gatsby is scheduled to begin previews at the Broadway Theatre on March 29, with opening night set for April 25.

Interesting enough, there is another version of the show scheduled to open in May of this year at the American Repertory Theatre. Dueling Gatsby’s? What will they think of next?

Lempicka Scheduled to Begin Previews on Broadway in March

Full disclosure. Until Lempika was announced, I had never heard of famed artist and outlaw aristocrat Tamara le Lempicka, who fled to Paris, France during the Russian Revolution, and used her painting skills to provide for her family.

I have, however, heard of Eden Espinosa who has one of the best Broadway voices that I have ever heard, as well as being a former Elphaba in Wicked, the final Maureen in Rent, and the star of Brooklyn to name a few. Not to mention a slew of other critically acclaimed performances across the country, as well as an award-winning debut album. Quite the resume don’t you think?

Lempika , which first premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2018, followed by another acclaimed production in 2022 at the La Jolla Playhouse, is scheduled to begin previews at the Longacre Theatre on March 19, with opening night scheduled for April 14.

Directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly, the show features music by Matt Gould, lyrics by Carson Kreitzer, with a book by Gould and Kreitzer. I smell a Tony Award nomination in Ms. Espinosa’s future.

New Musical SUFFS Coming to Broadway in March

Like with every season, there are some shows that I am not familiar with prior to it being announced, mostly due to not reading up on it beforehand. Case in point, the new musical SUFFS .

The show, which I later learned played a critically acclaimed, sold out run last year at the Public Theatre, is set in the years leading up to the signing of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 and the ultimate battle for a woman’s right to vote. Or as we know it today, the American Woman’s Suffrage Movement. An issue that I actually studied last year in my American History course that while I knew little about prior, proved to be one of the most important times in our country’s history.

Not to mention a great idea for a musical in my opinion. Especially after hearing some of Shaina Taub’s amazing songs, who along with writing the book, music, and lyrics, also plays the role of Alice Paul, one of the leaders in the fight for women’s rights. Directed by Leigh Silverman, previews for SUFFS is set to begin at the Music Box Theatre on March 26, with opening night scheduled for April 18. I can’t wait.

Previews for The Heart of Rock and Roll Coming to Broadway in March

Show of hands? Who doesn’t love Huey Lewis and the News?

How can you not, right? Now while The Heart of Rock and Roll features the music of this iconic band, it is not the story of their meteoric rise to super stardom during the 1980’s. Although, how awesome would that be?

Instead, The Heart of Rock and Roll features a brand-new story by Jonathan A. Abrams and Tyler Mitchell that focuses on a group of twenty-somethings on the cusp of achieving their dreams. Their only problem is which one? The corporate world or the world of Rock and Roll?

Previews for The Heart of Rock and Roll are set to begin at the James Earl Jones Theatre on March 29 with opening night scheduled for April 22.

Featuring over two dozen of the band’s biggest hits, I have no doubt that it will have audiences singing and dancing in the aisles. I know I can’t wait to see The Heart of Rock and Roll .

The Notebook to open on Broadway March 14th

You’ve read the book. You’ve seen the movie. Now see this beloved love story, live on stage.

Based on Nicholas Spark’s 1996 best-selling novel, the new musical, The Notebook , began previews on February 10 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre with opening night scheduled for March 14.

Featuring music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson, book by Bekah Brunstetter, and direction by Michael Grief and Schele Williams, The Notebook is on its way to becoming one of the big hits of the Broadway season. Not a surprise when you consider the raves the show received during its initial 2022 run at Chicago’s Shakespeare Festival.

Now, while I have never seen the 2004 film or read Spark’s book, I have always been a sucker for a good old-fashioned love story, so you better believe that I am not going to miss seeing The Notebook theatre fans.

Cabaret Opening in April on Broadway

Having worked in the theatre industry for close to three decades, I have seen allot of shows over the years. One in particular being the 1998 revival of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret that I had the honor of seeing at a private performance before it began previews the following day.

At the time, I had never seen a production of this Tony Award winning classic, or the 1973 Academy Award winning film starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey. However, it did not take me long before I was transported to 1930’s Berlin and all of its fascinating characters. By the time it closed six years later I had seen it over a dozen times. Clearly it had an enormous impact on me.

Now here we are all these years later and the show is returning to the Great White Way courtesy of a brand new critically acclaimed production from the West End where it is still playing to sold-out audiences at London’s Kit Kat Klub.

Starring Academy and Tony Award winner Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee and Gayle Rankin as Sally Bowles, and directed by Rebecca Frecknall, Cabaret is scheduled to begin previews at the August Wilson Theatre on April 1 with opening night set for April 21. Something tells me I just might have to check this one out.

2023-24 Broadway Season Preview - Part Four

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I will be looking at the Broadway premier of three new plays, two beloved musical revivals, and a new production of a theatre classic. Well, wouldn’t you know it, but another musical revival has been announced since my last blog, which means I will be previewing a total of seven shows now. So, let us get to it.

2023-2024 Broadway Season Preview – Part Two

That’s right, theatre fans. It is time for Part Two in my Four-Part Series of the 2023-2024 Broadway season.

This week I will be discussing four shows. Two highly acclaimed plays that are making their Broadway debut, a new musical featuring two of Broadway’s most loved performers, and the first Broadway revival of a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning play. So, let us get to it shall we?

In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students.

Like all Roundabout Theatre productions, it is a limited run. However, I would not be surprised in the least if it ends up extending by a week or two. I know I cannot wait to see it again.

2023-2024 Broadway Season - Part One

April 24,2023. Care to guess what happened on that date, theatre fans? No, it was not the opening night of a brand-new play or musical on the Great White Way. Instead, it was my last blog, which just so happened to feature my take on some of the new shows set to open that Spring during the final weeks of the 2022-2023 Broadway season. Now here we are almost six months later and it’s time to do it all over again. Only this time it’s the 2023-2024 season. And what an exciting season it is too theatre fans. In fact, between now and the end of April, there are seventeen plays and musicals scheduled to open . Not only that, but six of those productions are brand new musicals. Which for those of you keeping score, makes a total of nine when you add in, Back to the Future , Here Lies Love which opened this past Summer, and Gutenberg! The Musical!, which just opened last week. Well, now that, that’s out of the way, what do you say we start with a little sneak peek of a few of those shows right now? And what better way to start then with one of this season’s most anticipated new plays?

The show’s journey from the screen to the stage actually began in 2018 when it was in the process of being adapted by the one and only twenty-one-time Tony Award winner, Harold Prince. Or as he was always referred to as, Hal. Following his death in 2019, the project was taken over by Sammi Cannold who serves as the show’s director. So, what exactly is the show all about? Well, I’ll tell you. According to the show’s press release, How To Dance In Ohio takes place at a “group counseling center in Columbus, Ohio, where seven young autistic young adults prepare for a spring formal dance-a rite of passage that breaks open their routines and sets off hilarious and heartbreaking encounters with love, stress, excitement, and independence.” Sounds like an incredible and moving night at the theatre to me. Previews for the show are set to begin at the Belasco Theatre on November 15, with opening night scheduled for December 10.

2023 Tony Awards Nominees

Nominations in 26 competitive categories for the American Theatre Wing’s 76th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards® were announced today by star of Funny Girl Lea Michele and 2022 Tony Award-winner Myles Frost. The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 40 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. The 2023 Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. (The list of nominations follows.)

Marking 76 years of excellence on Broadway, The Tony Awards, hosted by Ariana DeBose, will air LIVE on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from the historic United Palace in Washington Heights, in New York City from 8:00-11:00 PM, ET/5:00-8:00 PM, PT on the CBS Television Network, and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.

CBS and Pluto TV will present The Tony Awards: Act One, a pre-show of live, exclusive content leading into the 76th Annual Tony Awards. The celebration commences at 6:30-8:00 PM, ET/3:30-5:00 PM PT, on Pluto TV, the leading free streaming television service (FAST). Viewers can access the show on their smart TV, streaming device, mobile app or online by going to Pluto TV and clicking on the “Pluto TV Celebrity” channel (no payment, registration or sign-in required).

Legitimate theatrical productions opening in any of the 41 eligible Broadway theatres during the current season may be considered for Tony nominations. The 2022/2023 eligibility season began Thursday, May 5, 2022 and ended Thursday, April 27, 2023. The Tony Awards will be voted in 26 competitive categories by 769 designated Tony voters within the theatre community.

As previously announced, the 2023 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be presented to Lisa Dawn Cave, Victoria Bailey and Robert Fried. The Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award will be presented to Jerry Mitchell.

Spring Broadway Season Part Three

That’s right theatre fans. It’s time for the final part in my three-part series on the Broadway Spring season. So, let’s get to it.

First up? Room. Based on the 2010 best selling novel by Emma Donoghue, Room is set to begin previews at the recently renovated James Earl Jones Theatre on April 3, with opening night scheduled for April 17. The new play with music features a script by Donoghue, and music and lyrics by Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett, the latter of which who also serves as the show’s director. Adapted into an award-winning 2015 film starring Brie Larson in her Academy Award winning performance, Room stars Adrienne Warren in her return to the stage since her Tony Award winning triumph in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. Starring along side her is Tony nominee’s Ephraim Sykes and Kate Burton, as well as Tina Benko, Michael Genet, Triney Sandoval, Aiden Mekhi Sierra, and Christopher Woodley. The show, which first premiered in London in May 2017, followed by productions in both Dublin, Ireland, and London, Ontario, will play a limited engagement through September 17, 2023.

Next up? The Thanksgiving Play . Now based on the title I’m guessing it’s not a show about the 4 ^th of July or St. Patrick’s Day. What it is, is a brand-new comedy from playwright Larissa Fast Horse, who is making her Broadway debut, and directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown). Previews for The Thanksgiving Play are set to begin at the Hayes Theatre on March 23, with opening night scheduled for April 23. It was also just recently announced that the highly anticipated show will feature a bevy of Broadway and television favorites. Who you ask? Why none other than Tony Award winner Katie Finneran, and some of television’s most recognizable faces of the last several years. Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), Scott Foley (Scandal) and D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place). So, I know what you’re all thinking. What is the show all about? Well, according to the show’s press release, The Thanksgiving Play, “features a troupe of really, really well-meaning theatre artists who attempt to put on a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving school pageant, when things get messy. Hilarious and poignant, this delicious play skewers everything right, wrong, and woke in America.” Now that sounds like my type of play.

Another one of this season’s most highly anticipated new shows is Prima Facie by Australian/British playwright Suzie Miller. The solo show, which first premiered in Sydney, Australia in Spring 2019, will play a limited ten week engagement at the John Golden Theatre beginning on April 11, with opening night scheduled for April 23. So, why all the anticipation you ask? Well, it might have something to do with that fact that the show is starring Emmy Award winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve). The show, which is being directed by Justin Martin, made its London debut in April 2022, where it opened to rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike during its two month run. So, what is the show all about? Well, according to the show’s press release Prima Facie states, “Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game: defending; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge." Expect the show’s star to be a big contender at this years Tony Awards.

Starring Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Sean Hayes (Will and Grace, Promises, Promises) and written by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, War Paint) is Good Night, Oscar . The new play, which tells the real-life story of actor, comedian, composer, and radio and talk show host Oscar Levant, is set to begin previews at the Belasco Theatre on April 7, with opening night scheduled for April 24. Prior to its Broadway bow, the show played a critically acclaimed sold out run at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre last year where it received seven Joseph Jefferson nominations including Best Play, Best Principle Leading Actor, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress. Directed by Lisa Peterson. Good Night, Oscar also stars Emily Bergl, Peter Grosz, Ben Rappaport, and John Zdrojeski, and will play a limited twenty week engagement closing on August 23. I smell a hit.

Let me get this straight. A new play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Auburn, directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, and starring Tony Award nominees Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht? Count me in theatre fans. Summer, 1976 , which is being produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club, was originally scheduled to play at it’s Off-Broadway venue but will now instead play its main stage at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre with previews beginning on April 4, prior to its April 25 opening. Wise decision I have to say as it is more than worthy of a Broadway run based on the track record of its creative team and its two leading ladies. Set in Ohio during our nation’s Bicentennial, Summer, 1976 tells the story of two sisters who according to the show’s website, “navigate motherhood, ambition, and intimacy, and help each other discover their own independence.” Sounds like a great night in the theatre to me.

Last but certainly not least is a show that to be honest wasn’t on most folks radar at the beginning of the season, myself included. Yet here we are all these months later and New York, New York is about to take Broadway by storm this Spring. At least I think so. Based on Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film, the show will feature all of the film’s signature songs including the title number, all of which were written by John Kander and the late Fred Ebb, and thirteen new songs with music by Kander and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. You might know him from a little show by the name of Hamilton. Set in New York City following World War II, New York, New York, which features direction and choreography by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman and a book by David Thompson and Sharon Washington, is scheduled to begin previews at the St. James Theatre on March 24, with opening night set for April 26. Now I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see this show. Expect it to be a big contender at this year’s Tony Awards.

Spring Broadway Season Part Two

That’s right theatre fans. It’s time for Part Two in my three-part series on the Broadway Spring season.

First up? Life of Pi . Based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel, and winner of five Olivier Awards including Best Play of the Year, the show is set to begin previews on March 9 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, with opening night scheduled for March 30. Now while I did not read the acclaimed novel, I did see Ang Lee’s fantastic film adaptation that received eleven 2012 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and won four including Best Director of the Year for Lee’s brilliant work on the film. Now for those of you that may not be familiar with the novel or the film, I have included a brief synopsis about this critically acclaimed story courtesy of the show’s official press release.” After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, a sixteen-year old boy named Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors-a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. Time is against them, nature is harsh, who will survive?” Well, I’m sold.

Next up is the new Hee-Haw inspired musical Shucked . Now I don’t know about you, but I was a huge Hee-Haw fan growing up. Not to mention the book is written by Tony Award winner Robert Horn who won a much deserved Tony Award in 2019 for his libretto of Tootsie. Oh and did I mention it’s also being directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien? Now while I am not as familiar with the work of the show’s songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McNally, they do have quite the track record with a slew of number one songs and multiple Grammy nominations and awards between them. Previews for the show are set to begin at the Nederlander Theatre on March 8, with opening night scheduled for April 4. So, what exactly is the show about? Well according to the show’s site, Shucked, “pairs up a semi-neurotic comedy writer with two music superstars from Nashville? A hilarious and audacious farm-to-fable musical about the one thing Americans everywhere can’t get enough of: corn. I mean who doesn’t love corn? I guess we will see.

Coming in at number three is Fat Ham , the 2022 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Written by James ljames and directed by New York’s Public Theatre Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali, Fat Ham is set to begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on March 21, with opening night scheduled for April 12. The show, which makes it’s Broadway debut following it’s critically acclaimed sold out run last Spring at the Pubic Theatre, is a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Only this time instead of a castle in 14 ^th Century Denmark, this new version takes place in the South at an outdoor barbeque where the play’s leading character, a black and queer college student named Juicy is visited by the ghost of his deceased father begging his son to find his killer and exact his revenge. Sounds like an interesting night in the theatre don’t you think? Starring the original Off-Broadway cast, Fat Ham will play a limited run through August 6.

Well, would you look at that. Another beloved musical revival opening on Broadway this season. I am of course talking about Lerner and Lowe’s beloved classic, Camelot . First produced on Broadway in 1960, Camelot was based on T.H. White’s novel The Once and Future King. Now while the show enjoyed a two-year run-on Broadway, it was not nominated for Best Musical of the Year. However, it is most known as one of President John F. Kennedy’s favorite cast recordings, particularly the lyrics, “Don’t let it be forgot/That once there was a spot/For one brief, shining moment/That was known as Camelot.” A fact that became known a week after his assassination. This new production, which is being directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, and features a new book by Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Aaron Sorkin, is set to begin previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on March 9, with opening night scheduled for April 23. Starring as King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, and the woman they both love, Guenevere, are Andrew Burnap, Jordan Donica, and Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo. Here’s hoping this new production is shown more love from the Tony Award committee than it got sixty-three years ago.

One of the funniest plays that I have seen in the past decade is the Play That Goes Wrong . The show, which began its acclaimed Broadway run in Spring 2017 before closing after a near two-year run, then transferred to Off-Broadway’s New World Stages where it continues to this day. Now here we are almost six years later and the show’s writers are about to take Broadway by storm once again with Peter Pan Goes Wrong. The play which features the same cast of characters from the original who have accepted the task of presenting J.M. Barrie’s beloved story, is set to begin previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 17, with opening night scheduled for April 19. The show, which first premiered in London’s West End in December 2013, will play a limited sixteen and half week run through July 9. I can’t wait to see it.

Spring Broadway Season Part One

That’s right theatre fans. The Spring Broadway season is officially here. In fact, between now and the end of April, there are sixteen shows set to open on the Great White Way. Today’s blog will highlight five of those highly anticipated shows.

First up, and one that I am particularly excited to see is A Doll’s House starring Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain. The show, which believe it or not first premiered over one hundred and forty-four years ago in Denmark, was written by famed Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, with a new adaptation by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog, and features direction by Tony Award nominee Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal). Set in Norway during the Christmas holidays, A Doll’s House focuses on the tumultuous marriage between Nora and Torvald Helmer and the impact it has on their family and friends. Previews for the show began on February 13 at the Hudson Theatre with opening night scheduled for March 9.

Next up? The first Broadway revival of Parade starring Tony Award winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Theatre World Award winner Micaela Diamond (The Cher Show). Based on the true story of Leo and Lucille Frank, and his trial and conviction for the murder and rape of thirteen-year-old factory employee Mary Phagan, the show features music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown and a book by Alfred Uhry, both of which won Tony’s for their work in 1999. I had the pleasure of seeing Parade during its first Broadway run and it quickly became one of my favorite shows. Previews for the show began at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 21, with opening night scheduled for March 16. Directed by two-time Tony Award nominee Michael Arden (Spring Awakening, Once On This Island), the show will play a limited engagement through August 6. Expect the show to be a big contender at this year’s Tony Awards.

What’s that you say? Another beloved revival headed to Broadway? It’s true. Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ , which first opened on Broadway in March 1978, is set to begin previews at the Music Box Theatre on March 2, with opening night scheduled for March 19. The show, which was Fosse’s second longest running production following Pippin, is being directed by original cast member and Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento (Wicked). Now, while I don’t fancy myself a dancer, at least not in the traditional sense, Bob Fosse is and always has been a hero of mine and I can’t wait to see this new production of one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Featuring the music of artists Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, John Phillip Sousa, and countless more, Dancin’ is one show you do not want to miss. Here’s hoping lighting strikes twice once again and it becomes an even bigger hit than before.

December 6, 2015. Care to guess what happened on that day? Well if you are a theatre fan like me, than you know on that day the new musical School of Rock officially opened on Broadway. Oh and it also featured music by some guy by the name of Andrew Lloyd Webber. You’ve heard of him, right? Now all joking aside there is a reason for it. Two words. Bad Cinderella . And no that is not a typo. It’s actually a brand-new musical with music by, you guessed it, Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, and lyrics by Tony Award winner David Zippel, and a book by Emerald Fennell. The show, which first premiered in London’s West End in August 2021, was previously titled Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella before changing its name last year. Set in France, this newly updated modern look at the beloved fairy tale, is set to begin previews at the Imperial Theatre on February 17, with opening night scheduled for March 23. Since moving to New York over thirty years ago, I have seen all of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new shows as well as his many revivals. Bad Cinderella will be my tenth. I can’t wait.

Well, would you look at that. Another musical revival, and just like both Dancin’ and Parade, I can’t wait to see this Spring. I am of course talking about Sweeney Todd starring Tony Award nominee Josh Groban as the title character, and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett. This new production of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler classic will be the second Sondheim musical this season following the triumphant revival of Into the Woods that closed last month. Plus, with the planned Fall 2023 revival of Merrily We Roll Along, and last season’s Tony Award winning production of Company, this will make a total of four of his shows to return to Broadway since his untimely death in November 2021. The show which is being directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton) and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Steven Hoggett (Once) is set to begin previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on February 26, with opening night scheduled for March 26. Not only that, but the orchestra will feature the original twenty-seven instruments, something that is unprecedented in this day and age.

Applause-Tickets: Making Our Way Back to Broadway, Business and Life in 2022

As I sit back nearing the end of a very busy year in Broadway Theatre ticket sales ( London and Las Vegas show tickets too), I have a big smile on my face. Just a year ago, we were experiencing lots and lots of canceled Covid 19 performances on Broadway. And in London too. My wife Celeste and I spent weeks refunding clients for canceled shows as well as rebooking many people into performances that did play. We rebooked people up until showtime on some nights. And dealing with all the accounting issues and credits and rebilling to and from clients and theatres. We started very early in the morning and didn’t take a break until late at night. It was hectic each and every day for a few weeks. Not to mention the anxiety of having our business “put on hold” for a year and a half already at that point. Those were the days when the Omicron Variant was all around us, making life as we knew it, quite uncomfortable. Even though Broadway’s “re-start” took place only a few months before, we were beginning to wonder if we were going to have to close the business eventually. Or whether these Covid variants would be responsible for canceled shows on an ongoing basis for the long term.

So now, just one year later, with hardly a canceled performance due to Covid 19 for most of 2022, it gives me great pleasure to say that our little company, Applause-Tickets.com, has not only survived but has just had its best year in a very long time. We thank our family, friends, and clients for this incredibly successful year. Thanks to our partners at all the theatres on Broadway, London, and Las Vegas for always taking care of our clients too. Many were flexible, taking ticket returns and exchanges on a moment’s notice. Our Broadway ticket business grew as well as our ticket sales in London and Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, several long-time ticket services decided to close their doors in the early days of the pandemic. I was so sorry to see them go as we grew up in the ticket industry together while all starting our own businesses 35 years ago. There was always enough business for all of us. And we all got along really well. But I guess it was time for some of our friends to call it a day and retire. Although I am starting to think about retiring myself, somewhere down the road not long from now, I am glad that Celeste and I continued through the difficult days of 2020, 2021, and 2022 and the significant losses the business suffered. We just didn’t want the business to end that way. And we sure are glad we stayed in business.

It turns out that hundreds of our friends in the hotel, hospitality, and travel trade industry, also went thru a difficult time. The travel industry was decimated. Fortunately, it has made a tremendous comeback this year as well. Whether it was one of our local New York City hotel concierge colleagues or veteran travel agent or tour operator clients, we are all coming back from the horrible early days of the pandemic. Yes, the travel industry is back and doing well again. True, although we sold lots and lots of theatre, sports, and concert tickets in 2022, it was “reconnecting” with these friends, colleagues, and clients that meant the most to me personally. At age 66 now, after enjoying a successful career while enjoying a good life too, it’s been this “reconnecting” with long-time friends of our little business that has meant more to me than just about anything I can think of. I am forever grateful.

For me, it really isn’t about selling tickets any longer these days. Not at all. Each day I plan on (for a moment), remembering the difficult time we have come thru and having a great appreciation for all those special relationships I previously mentioned. And, of course, for being fortunate to have the cherished relationships we have with dear family and friends all these years. I think I may have already started this great appreciation throughout this past year. Talking with my peers about our collective “comeback” has been therapeutic I guess.

I’ve had a really great time at work this year, and have enjoyed talking with people, not only about their ticket needs but mostly about their lives. It’s important to try and make a living of course, but these relationships we have with so many people that we do business with is often taken for granted.

Celeste and I want to give our heartfelt thanks to these wonderful friends, colleagues, clients, and family members that have helped our company “comeback”. We wish everyone a safe, happy, and beautiful Christmas, Hannukah, and New Year.

Fall Broadway Preview Part V

That’s right theatre fans. It is time for Part V of my “Fall Broadway Preview” where I will discuss the final four shows set to open before the end of the year. So, let’s get to it.

First up is a new play which until recently wasn’t even on my radar of upcoming shows this season. In fact, I only just heard about it a few weeks ago. However, based on the show’s premise, not to mention the outstanding reviews the production received during its limited run at the Public Theatre in 2019, Jordan E. Cooper’s Ain’t No Mo is sure to be a critical darling once again when it opens this fall. The show, which is being produced by Academy Award winner Lee Daniels (Precious, The Butler) and directed by Obie Award winner Stevie Walker-Webb, is set to begin previews at the Belasco Theatre on November 3, with opening night scheduled for December 1. Here’s hoping it’s a hit.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this next play theatre fans. Not only is it starring six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald and directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon but it is also the first production in the newly renamed James Earl Jones Theatre (formerly the Cort Theatre).

Now if you think that is exciting wait until you hear this. Adrienne Kennedy, the show’s award-winning playwright will be making her Broadway debut at the age of ninety-one. Who says dreams don’t come true? Ohio State Murders , which first premiered as a one act play in 1992, is scheduled to begin previews on November 11, with opening night scheduled for December 8. Expect the show to be a major Tony contender come June.

Returning fresh off a Tony win for Best Play Revival of the Year is Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out . The show, which also won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2003, will begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on October 27, where it is scheduled to perform through January 29. Directed by eight-time Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis, Take Me Out stars Tony nominee’s Jesse Williams and Michael Oberholtzer, and Emmy nominee Jesse Tyler Ferguson who is reprising his Tony Award winning performance.

Last, and certainly not least is Tony nominee Gabriel Byrne’s autobiographical one- man show Walking with Ghosts . Based on Byrne’s own childhood experiences growing up in Dublin, Ireland, to his road to the bright lights of both Tinseltown and the Great White Way, Walking with Ghosts is set to begin previews at the Music Box Theatre on October 18, with opening night scheduled to be announced. The show, which is based on his 2021 memoir of the same, will play a limited run through December 30.

Fall Broadway Preview Part IV

That’s right theatre fans. It is time for Part IV of my “Fall Broadway Preview” where I will discuss three more upcoming productions set to open before the end of the year. So, let’s get to it.

First up, and one that I will admit when first announced I wasn’t quite sure what to feel about. Then a couple of weeks ago I happened to be channel surfing and came upon the show’s commercial. Suffice to say I was suddenly a lot more intrigued than before. Now I know what you are all thinking. What is this mysterious show that is now suddenly on my radar? Well, I’ll tell you.

It is none other than & Juliet . And no, that is not a typo. It’s the actual name of the show, and even better, it’s a brand-new musical featuring some of the biggest pop tunes of the past thirty years. Not to mention, a book by Emmy winner David West Read, who just happened to win his award for writing a little show by the name of Schitt’s Creek, only one of the greatest television comedies of all-time. Previews for the show are set to begin at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on October 28, with opening night scheduled for November 17. Boy, if I wasn’t excited before, I sure am now.

Let me just start off by saying that I consider the 1959 film Some Like It Hot to be one of the greatest comedies of all time. Right up there with The Producers, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Both of which were turned into beloved musicals that won a slew of Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year and enjoyed years of success both on Broadway and London's West End. Now for those theatre buffs like me, you might recall that there has already been a Broadway musical based on the Billy Wilder masterpiece. It was called Sugar, and it opened on Broadway in 1972 where it ran for over five hundred performances and was nominated for Best Musical of the Year.

A moderate success you might say. Somehow though I have a feeling this one might just fair a little better. Why you ask? Well, for starters, it features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman whose show Hairspray won eight 2003 Tony Awards and ran for over seven years. The show also features a new book by last year’s Tony Award winner Matthew Lopez (The Inheritance) and critically acclaimed television talk show host and author Amber Ruffin. And last, but certainly not least, it is being directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Previews are set to begin at the historic Shubert Theatre on November 1, with opening scheduled for December 11. Something tells me that this is going to do very well come Tony nomination time. We shall see.

Full disclosure. I am a HUGE Neil Diamond fan. Which as why you can guess that I am counting down the days until A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond Musical opens on Broadway. Having said all that, I was still a little skeptical at first. I mean for every Jersey Boys, Beautiful, or Ain’t Too Proud, there is a Lennon, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, or Ring of Fire. Thankfully, my apprehension dwindled right away after hearing that Tony Award nominee Will Swenson (Hair, Rock of Ages) and fellow Tony Award nominee Mark Jacoby (Ragtime, Showboat) would be playing Neil during various stages of his life and career. Not to mention the show is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

Oh, and did I mention it got amazing reviews and played to packed house during its recent summer engagement at the Colonial Theatre in Boston? Well, it did. Previews are set to begin at the Broadhurst Theatre on November 2, with opening night scheduled for December 2. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait.

Fall Broadway Preview Part III

That’s right theatre fans. It is time for Part III of my “Fall Broadway Preview” where I will discuss three more upcoming productions set to open before the end of the year. So, let’s get to it.

First up, and one that I think is going to be one of the biggest winners come award season next June. Kimberly Akimbo , which is based on David Lindsey-Abaire’s 2001 play of the same name, is set to begin previews at the Booth Theatre on October 12, with opening night scheduled for November 10. Featuring book and lyrics by the playwright himself, and music by Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home, Caroline or Change), Kimberly Akimbo stars Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza) as the title character Kim, that of a shy and lonely teenage girl, who over a period of time begins to experience symptoms similar to that of the disease progeria, that causes individuals to appear older than they actually are due to their rapidly advancing age. Kind of like a modern version of the lead character in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button you might say.

Prior to its Broadway bow, the show played a celebrated run Off-Broadway at the Linda Gross Theater from November 6, 2021, thru January 15,2022, where it was nominated for a total of twenty-three awards, and won the Drama Desk, Outer Critic’s Circle, and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical of the Year. Now do you see why I think there might be a slew of awards in its future. Time will tell. Let me just start off by saying that I know nothing about KPOP , or the worldwide phenomenon behind it. What can I say? I am a guy in my late 40’s. What I do know however, is how excited people seem to be that it is coming to Broadway. Previews for the show are set to begin at the intimate Circle in the Square Theatre on October 13, with opening night scheduled for November 20. The show first premiered Off-Broadway at the Arts Nova Theatre in 2017. However due to delays with casting, and the pandemic, it was postponed until now. Now while the show may not be my cup of tea, I have a strong feeling that KPOP is going to take Broadway by storm.

Next up, and one that I really want to see is Martyna Majok’s Cost of Living which began previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 13, with opening night scheduled for October 3. Directed by Obie Award winner Jo Bonney, and starring Greg Mozgola, Katy Sullivan, Kara Young, and David Zayas, Cost of Living, according to the show’s official website is described as a play about ,” the forces that bring people together, the complexity of caring and being cared for, and the ways we all need each other in this world.” Sounds like one compelling night in the theatre to me. The show, which won the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play, and the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama will play a limited engagement thru October 30.

Fall Broadway Preview Part II

That’s right theatre fans. It’s time for Part II of my “Fall Broadway Preview.” Last week I discussed two new productions that are currently playing, with one more scheduled to begin next week. This week, I will highlight three more So, let’s get to it.

What’s that you say? One of my favorite plays, by one of my favorite playwrights is headed back to Broadway in a brand-new production. Oh, and its also starring Samuel L Jackson, Danielle Brooks, and John David Washington. Count me in theatre fans. August Wilson’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning The Piano Lesson which first premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987, with additional productions the following two years before it’s Broadway debut in 1990, is now in previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, with opening night set for October 13. Directed by Tony nominee Latonya Richard Jackson, the show is scheduled to play a limited run through January 15, 2023. Now as much as I love this show, I have never seen it. You can better believe I won’t miss my chance this time around, and neither should you.

One of my favorite theatrical experiences of all time was seeing the original Broadway production of Suzi Lori-Parks’ Topdog/Underdog at the Ambassador Theatre in 2002. Going in, I knew nothing about the show except that it had previously had a critically acclaimed production at the Public Theatre that starred Don Cheadle and Jeffrey Wright and was directed by Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe. I attended the show that night with a friend of mine who while in the entertainment industry had never seen a Broadway show. Thankfully, I picked a good one, not to mention Mos Def who is one of his favorite musicians, was now starring in Don Cheadle’s role for the Broadway production. He got excellent reviews by they way, as did the show, as well as winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the same year. Previews for the show are set to begin at the John Golden Theatre on September 27, with opening night scheduled for October 20. Starring Tony Award nominee Corey Hawkins (Six Degrees of Separation) and Emmy Award winner Yahya Abdul Matten II (Watchmen), and directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, is selling through January 15, 2023. Trust me theatre fans, this is one show you do not want to miss.

Now in previews at the Longacre Theatre is Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt . The show, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2020, is scheduled to open on October 2. Directed by fellow playwright and Tony Award nominee Patrick Marber, Leopoldstadt takes place in Vienna over a period of six decades that follows a Jewish family at the beginning of the 20 ^th Century who were forced to flee their homes due to pogroms that threated their beliefs and ways of living. Featuring a cast of forty performers, the two hour and ten-minute intermission less play is currently on sale through January 29, 2023. Although if the reviews are as good as the ones in London, I have a sneaking feeling it just might stick around a little longer. Fingers crossed.

Fall Broadway Season Part One

That’s right theatre fans. The fall Broadway season is officially here. Now if you had told me a year ago that there would be sixteen shows scheduled to open on the Great White Way at this time, I would have told you that you were crazy. Mostly due to a little thing by the name of COVID-19 that shut down both On and Off-Broadway for almost eighteen months. Thankfully, things are starting to get back to normal, and we can all gather together once again and enjoy the magic that is live theatre. As I mentioned, there are over two dozen plays and musicals scheduled to open before the end of the year. Today’s blog will highlight a few of those. And what better place to start than with one of Broadway’s most celebrated plays of all time.

I am of course talking about Arthur Miller’s award-winning play Death of a Salesman . The show, which first premiered on Broadway in 1949 has returned to the New York stage five other times since, including this production which began previews at the Hudson Theatre on September 17, with opening night scheduled for October 9. Starring Olivier Award nominee Wendall Pierce (The Wire) and Tony Award nominee Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline or Change) as Willy and Linda Loman, and directed by Olivier Award winner Miranda Cromwell, Death of a Salesman will play a limited run through January 15, 2023. It is one show you don’t want to miss.

Next up? The 1969 Tony Award winning Best Musical of the Year, 1776 The Musical . Previews for the highly anticipated show began previews on September 16, with opening night set for October 6. Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and Jeffrey L. Page, this new production which enjoyed a sold-out critically acclaimed run this past Summer at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts will perform at the American Airlines Theatre through January 8, 2023. I for one can’t wait to see this new production of this historical musical, and I encourage you to get your tickets for what is sure to be a major highlight of this season.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am that one of my favorite films of all time is headed to the stage. Almost Famous The Musical . Based on the award wining 2000 film of the same name, the show is scheduled to open at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on October 3 with opening night scheduled for November 3. Featuring book and lyrics by the film’s original director and screenwriter Academy Award winner Cameron Crowe, and music and lyrics by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), Almost famous is sure to have you rocking in your seat all night long. Oh and just in case you are wondering, yes Elton John’s Tiny Dancer is set to be featured in the stage adaptation. And just when I thought I couldn’t get even more exited.

Into the Woods starring Sara Bareilles, Brian D’Arcy James , Patina Miller, Phillipa Soo and a fantastic cast of talented performers will close at the St. James Theatre on August 21, 2022.

Mr. Saturday Night starring Billy Crystal was just announced to close on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Dear Evan Hansen , a very special musical that made Ben Platt with his fantastic acting and singing,a household name. Although Mr. Platt has been replaced quite some time ago by some very good performers, the show just doesn’t have great advanced sales any longer and will close on September 18, 2022.

Come From Away , the musical about the 38 airplanes that were diverted following the 9/11 attacks to a small town in Canada will play its final performance on October 10 this year.

Plaza Suite starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in Neil Simon‘s famous comedy. The show closes July 10 as well.

The Minutes , a play written by Tracy Letts and will be closing on July 24, 2022. It’s a very funny new comedy about power and small-town politics.

Company , the winner of this year‘s Tony awards best musical revival. The show stars Patti LuPone and Katrina Lenk and will be closing on July 31.

“ POTUS: or behind every great dumb ass are seven women trying to keep him alive” plays at the Shubert theater but will be closing on August 14, 2022. The show is about the president who manages to turn a public relations disaster into a world global crisis and the seven very intelligent women that he counts on that risk life, liberty and the pursuit of their sanity trying to keep the commander-in-chief out of trouble.

TINA the Tina Turner musical is one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time and unfortunately plays its last performance on August 14, 2022. Consider getting tickets for the show before it leaves Broadway.

Into the Woods closes and leaves Broadway after its final performance on August 21, 2022.

Dear Evan Hansen will play its final performance on September 18, 2022 and it’s about teenagers coming of age, a very serious and personal modern musical.

Come From Away closes on Broadway on October 9, 2022. This also is one of my favorite shows and is about 38 planes and nearly 7000 passengers that were forced to land in Newfoundland Canada during the 9/11 attacks, instantly doubling the population of this small town. The show is based on many interviews with locals that live there and how they basically hosted and took great care of the strangers that came to town.

These shows have been playing on Broadway for quite some time now and some of them will travel around the country in the coming months and years ahead. I hope this post finds you all well and enjoying the theater once again. My wife and I have gone to see 17 Broadway shows and one Off Broadway show since this past September, 2021. Thank goodness that Broadway is back in our lives once again!

In any case, I’m writing today just to share with you a list of Tony award nominations for this year‘s 75th Tony Awards presentation. The awards show will be held on Sunday, June 12 at Radio City. The show will be telecast on CBS from 8 to 11 PM. I know I’ll be watching and I hope you will be too.

Broadway Keeps Merrily Rolling Along- And Bringing In Lots Of Money Once Again

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and I guess that’s very true. One look at this picture of Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster doing their song and dance routine in the giant hit show, The Music Man , and anyone can tell that Broadway is really back now. In fact, last week the show took in $3.5 million in sales, the most for any Broadway show since the pandemic began in 2020. And I’ve seen the show and even though, in general, the prices are quite high for many of the seats, if one books far enough in advance, you can find a reasonably priced ticket. In addition to The Music Man, the biggest Broadway show sellers are long time established musicals Hamilton , Wicked , The lion King , Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Hadestown. Moulin Rouge is doing very well on Broadway as well. By the way, this is one of my favorite shows now. I didn’t realize that I would know just about every song played in this show. What a treat.

Just like with The Music Man, the rule of thumb with getting good tickets at reasonable prices is to try to book as far in advance as possible and hopefully be flexible when you can see the show. For instance, going on a weekday will generally get you somewhat lower pricing and better seats.

I’ve seen ten shows on Broadway since September 2021 and although I haven’t seen a show for close to a month now, my plans include saying Barry Manilow‘s Harmony, the revival of Funny Girl, the show that made Barbra Streisand famous, Paradise Square, Birthday Candles with Debra Messing, Mr. Saturday Night starring Billy Crystal, Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker and Mrs. Doubtfire, soon to re-open on Broadway after a three month hiatus.

I’ve been a ticket broker for 44 years. Years ago and up until quite recently, we would mail just about all of our customer ticket purchases to our client’s home or place of business. This way the customers would have the tickets in their possession, simply go to the theater, concert or sporting event they were attending and enjoy the event.

For several years now, many event producers have been issuing mobile tickets around the country and now Broadway events have mostly gone mobile. It’s a really simple concept for people. When tickets are purchased, a mobile ticket transfer is sent to the person attending the event. This does require downloading ticket apps.

Unfortunately there are several ticketing apps these days depending upon who is the ticket distributor of a show producers tickets. We often sell multiple shows to customers where they might have to download three or four different apps to receive their tickets. Can you believe that?

One day, a few months ago, I was taking a fairly lengthy train ride and was trying to think about what we could do to continue to make our customers happy while making it easier to shop for theater tickets, concerts and sporting events on our website. So I wrote a note to our webmaster and told him what I was thinking. After a few get together’s, he came up with a concept that appears to be very simple, easy to navigate, very cutting edge like, while continuing to stand out from those hundreds of other websites that are out there. And we like to think that our new website will describe Applause-Tickets, our team and what we do for the theatergoing public perfectly. And make for a far improved shopping experience.

I sincerely hope you’ll check out our webmaster’s latest Applause-Tickets.com website creation as we proudly unveil this new look. Although there are several hundred websites that sell tickets for various shows and events all over the world, in my personal opinion, many of them seem like cheap, “mostly the same plug-in” type of sites. The ticket industry is loaded with people that launch websites, plug into large online ticket broker “exchanges” filled with tickets and unfortunately mostly speculative, fake inventory listings. And prices? Many of the people posting ticket listings are delusional by posting some of the outrageously high prices they want for their tickets. I guess people hope the public will click on an attractive listing of seat locations and possibly pay these crazy prices.

But for our money, we do things differently at Applause-Tickets. And I’m proud to say that the major thing we do differently is that we promote “calling our service” and “talking to a live person“ who has expertise in guiding the public through the maze of shows and events on Broadway, London, Las Vegas and throughout the world.

We’d appreciate you having a look at our new website as one of the things I was looking for was to make it act like an app, without having to actually go to the App Store. And we are very happy to say that our webmaster was able to make this happen. The website design is “responsive”. It’s simple really. When you look at the Applause-Tickets.com website on any of your devices- phone, iPad or desktop, no matter your screen size, everything you’re looking at on a page will adjust to the device as the viewing area grows and shrinks. Very cool.

The website may be brand new, cool and easier than ever to navigate while Applause-Tickets.com maintains the same “old-school” way of doing business. Call us on the phone and we will answer, seven days a week and believe it or not- almost 24/7. We do need a couple hours of sleep of course. LOL.

Travel Agents, create fun times & earn $$ by offering show tickets

Dear Travel Agent Friends

Looking back over my 44 year career as a ticket broker, selling tickets for Broadway, London and Las Vegas shows, the one thing I know for sure is that I’ve made a lot of good friends in the travel agent community. Travel agents are a very special kind of people. They work extremely hard, especially the last two years when many in our industry made bookings, cancellations, re-bookings with more cancellations, and often lost money at every turn. Although I have to say, business seems to be looking up lately and that’s a good thing. People are traveling again and booking live entertainment just like they did prior to the pandemic setting in. Broadway shows collectively are selling up to 85% of their capacity these days. And London Theater and shows and concerts in Las Vegas are on the rise once again.

In my early days and my experience in offering show tickets in the travel agent GDS computer systems and by phone, where we offered show tickets to travel agents and their clients, I feel like I really understand what travel agents go through on a daily basis. Clients call up wanting to go on vacation, whether inquiring to book a cruise, USA land package or go on an overseas adventure. Travel agents have to put together many different ingredients in a trip to ensure a client's vacation will be a great one. And by offering show tickets, travel agents decided to get even more involved in yet another area to assist their clients in making memories that are very special. By offering show tickets in cities like New York, London and Las Vegas.

Who doesn’t love to talk about a concert they’ve seen recently or a huge star like Hugh Jackman playing in The Music Man selling out on Broadway in New York. Or maybe seeing Paul McCartney’s new tour, still playing great music at 80 years old. The list goes on and on. Live entertainment, whether a Broadway Show , West End show in London or one of the dozens of live entertainment options in Las Vegas has always been a fantastic way to ensure clients have a great time.

Travel agents have been offering clients to secure live entertainment event tickets for these memorable shows for over forty years now, starting in the old SABRE travel agent reservation system, and earning money at the same time. We have travel agent clients that secure one show and sometimes up to seven or eight shows during a client's trip to New York, London or Las Vegas. And those commission checks really add up.

By offering show tickets in the major cities where entertainment is a key ingredient to people having a good time, not only do travel agents help make memorable experiences and fun times for their clients, but they often manage to bring in more incremental revenue than they probably thought they would.

Applause-tickets.com has been paying travel agent commissions on tickets sold in New York, London and Las Vegas for a very long time now. We send our commission checks right after the performance goes in and clients have enjoyed the show of their choice. And believe it or not, travel agents at times do not get involved in offering show tickets but simply give out our company name, my name and our 800 number so the clients can book themselves. If I can determine who their travel agency is and where they’re located, I even send a commission check to the travel agent, simply for referring their clients. To show our appreciation of course. We still think the travel agents should handle the booking for the clients directly as it is a very positive thing to do.

In any case, I’m writing this post today because if I look back on my career, and as we are all getting used to the ups and downs of the pandemic, Broadway, London and Las Vegas shows have started once again. And I can attest to the fact that there is an enormous pent-up demand of travelers wanting to go see a show. In fact, Applause-Tickets.com is selling more premium seats than ever. And these premium seats tend to be considerably more expensive than the average ticket. Travel agents will always be doing their utmost to ensure clients have the best vacation possible but why not make money selling show tickets in these great cities? Clients will thank you for it, they will have a great time and commission checks will come rolling in.
