BROADWAY - MUSICAL
It’s 1957. You are at a beautiful beach house overlooking the Pacific. You’re there with Cary Grant, Clare Boothe Luce and Aldous Huxley and they are on an acid trip. Together. That is the bold premise of the new musical, FLYING OVER SUNSET, written and directed by James Lapine, premiering at the Beaumont this spring.
Keep in mind that the drug was legal then and was suggested, or prescribed by doctors, as a tool for enhancing self-awareness and healthy psychological exploration. It is a known fact that these three extraordinary people did experiment, individually, with LSD on multiple occasions. It is only in Lapine’s brilliant imagination, though, that the three shared an LSD trip. At least as far as we know. They were all in and around LA in the 1950s... Who’s to say it never happened?
FLYING OVER SUNSET delves into their private desires, hopes, sadness and secrets. It is about revelation and ultimately, connection. The portraits created are thoughtful, touching, intelligent and achingly human.
