BROADWAY - MUSICAL
It’s 1957. You are at a beautiful beach house overlooking the Pacific. You’re there with Cary Grant, Clare Boothe Luce and Aldous Huxley and they are on an acid trip. Together. That is the bold premise of the new musical, FLYING OVER SUNSET, written and directed by James Lapine, premiering at the Beaumont this spring. Keep in mind that the drug was legal then and was suggested, or prescribed by doctors, as a tool for enhancing self-awareness and healthy psychological exploration. It is a known fact that these three extraordinary people did experiment, individually, with LSD on multiple occasions. It is only in Lapine’s brilliant imagination, though, that the three shared an LSD trip. At least as far as we know. They were all in and around LA in the 1950s... Who’s to say it never happened? FLYING OVER SUNSET delves into their private desires, hopes, sadness and secrets. It is about revelation and ultimately, connection. The portraits created are thoughtful, touching, intelligent and achingly human. Applause-Tickets has live operators standing by to help you find the perfect Flying Over Sunset seats. Notes from James:
New Musical Flying Over Sunset To Open On Broadway Next Spring
Quick question. What does Clare Booth Luce, Aldous Huxley, and Cary Grant all have in common? Give up? Well, if you guessed that they are all featured characters in the new LSD influenced musical Flying Over Sunset, then you would be right.
The new musical, which features music by Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next To Normal), lyrics by Tony Award nominee Michael Korie (Grey Gardens), and book and direction by Tony Award winner James Lapine (Falsettos), is set to begin previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on March 12, 2020, with opening night scheduled for April 16.
By the way, this will be the first original musical to play at that theatre since Contact in 2000, which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year. Will lighting strike twice? We shall see. Now in case you are wondering who has been cast to play these three eccentric famous folks, you don't have to wonder any longer.
